V De-GayedFirst of all, my overall opinion of the new V Pilot: I liked it, but not as much as I'd hoped. I'll still watch, but I'm going to be downgrading my expectations considerably. The original V miniseries was groundbreaking (for TV SF), but the new version is instead repeating what's been working recently, imitating other shows like Lost, Heroes, and FlashForward. More specific to this site, I thought it was odd how SPECIFICALLY they degayed the original. Putting aside the usual slashing, there were two relationships on the original that seemed to have a deliberately homoerotic subtext: Diana and the female reporter (who I'm convinced were intended to be in a sexual relationship), and Brian and Daniel, who I don't think were supposed to actually be gay, but whose relationship was, I believe, deliberately tinged with homoeroticism to hit the old "gay Nazi" trope to fit with the Nazi metaphor of the series. There aren't a lot of relationships we've seen yet that closely parallel those of the original series. In fact, I think those may be the only two recreated so clearly in the pilot. Rather than either recreating the subtext, though, or simply letting it be erased in the many changes, they've recreated and heterized them. The female reporter is now a man played by Scott Wolf. And the "Hitler Youth" type recruiter is now a woman instead of a man. Unrelated to that, I'll add that I hope the Visitors' secret is something entirely different than it was in the original. There's no point dragging out the reveal for months, making us pretend to be intrigued by the reveal of something we already know. But if we're expecting reptilian people-eaters, and get something else... that WOULD be surprising. Submitted by Dave Doty (5140 points) (1120 posts) on Wed, 2009-11-04 11:53. |

de-gay
I think we have to be careful about saying the show has been "de-gayed." That suggests that THIS version had a gay subplot or subtext that has summarily been removed, and (to my knowledge) that's not the case.
I agree with you that there were definitely homoerotic undertones in the original version between Diana/Christine and Brian/Daniel, but nothing really ever came of that, and it was all open to suggestion. Kenneth Johnson had a very specific storyline in mind when he crafted the original miniseries. The Final Battle (while a fun mini of its own) really strayed away from the nazi parable, and the various subplots Johnson had built around that. Diana, for instance, moved quickly from a dangerous, sociopathic Josef Mengele character into a standard sci-fi villainess who took charge.
As for the new version, there's been some hubbub about it representing a subversive conservative viewpoint, but IMHO, you see what you want to see. If you go into it already thinking the Obama administration are a bunch of fascists, well, I guess there's plenty to compare it to. For most people with a lick of common sense, I think Johnson's paradigm of Nazi Germany still holds true, if played with a slightly less overt tone than his original story did.
I see what you are saying but...
I see what you are saying but I think you are giving too much weight to what little subtext that was there and putting a little bit of your own.
The feeling that fuels that Brian and Daniels relationship is admiration for someone of apparent power that gives voice to the under appreciated and marginalized, which is supposed to represent what the Nazis did for Germany that resulted after WWI. You might interpret admiration as homo eroticism, but is really not. When it comes to Diana and Christine, well that is just pure and simple mind control, nothing more.
As for Tyler and Lisa and the gender change, it seems more of a practical reason than anything, if they are going to go with the baby story they just saved themselves a character and a lot of plot...random thought, can you imagine if the males carry the offspring in their species...mmm. Remember that the show doesnt have a full season pick up, it only has an order for 13 episodes and the production is not going smoothly, I think the pilot alone was redone twice, they maybe just cramming what they can get away with so that people can get interested before their opportunity is gone.
I am inclined to agree with zanefan, we should not say V was degayed since there was absolutely nothing gay in the original. We usually say that Hoyay makes a show gay, but it really doesnt, certainly not in this case.
In the end the tone of the show is different, it does seem to have a conservative vrs liberal tone that would reflect todays US political climate and the Visitors are being portrayed more in the likes of a terrorist organization than an invading fascist foreign power, even if retains some of the elements.
Not a bad pilot, a little rushed maybe, but it will have me watching.
Diana/Christine
If you listen to the original mini-series' DVD commentry from Kenny Johnson, you'll get confirmation the homoerotic element of Diana's interaction with Christine was deliberate and not just imagined. Nothing like that was said of Brian and Daniel.
Thanks!
