"All You Need Is Love - My Daughter-In-Law Is A Man" - German movie streaming online

The German tv station SAT.1 on Tuesday in prime-time premiered the made for tv movie "All You Need Is Love - My Daughter-In-Law Is A Man" revolving around a gay story line (and advertised accordingly in advance) garnering an average viewership of 3.52 million (a good rating in Germany).

The story that SAT.1 made into this movie? It's the story of Hans and Nikki. Hans moved from his small Bavarian hometown (well, a village) to Berlin and after three years informs his mother by way of a letter that he intends to come back home to celebrate his wedding. The little details he omits: he is gay. So obviously his mother is a bit shocked when he shows up with his future-husband, Nikki - who isn't too thrilled either when he realizes that Hans never came out to his mother and she therefor expected to meet her daughter-in-law...

The movie nicely mixes the romantic story between Hans and Nikki whose relationship is tested by this "little" omission of Hans as well as by the different ways each of them wants to handle the prejudices and intolerance which the villagers show to them once the truth gets out. However, tolerance and understanding slowly grows at least among some of the villagers ... all culminating in ... (well I don't want to spoil it but ...)

The movie is entertaining and stands out from many other made for tv movies as it neither is a comedy nor tackles exclusively a coming out story or the story about intolerant people being bettered thanks to getting into closer contact to a gay person. No, this movie actually takes the story of a couple in love and from this central romantic element tells an engaging story which happens to touch the coming out, the gay wedding and the intolerance questions - but in a very engaging, entertaining way.

Sounds interesting? Well, here is the - most probably for most of you - bad news: as a made for tv movie produced on behalf of the German tv station SAT.1 the movie is only available in German (no English dubbing, no subtitles) ... however if you happen to understand German or just want to take a look at the romantic couple at th heart of the movie (and the grand finale, which doesn't require any understanding of German) you can still do so ...
