Wonder Woman (SPOILERS)

Over at the DC Message Boards, Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone recently confirmed that new character Achilles (from the Rise of the Olympian story arc) is gay.

For those not familiar with Gail, she's one of the most outspoken champions of diversity in comics today. (She also did an interview with After Ellen earlier this year.) She's a bit better known for her lesbians/bi women, but she has created or utilized some gay male characters in the past. Here's a quote from the above link:

"It's just part of who he is. DC has a ton of lesbians, but not that many gay heroes or even anti-heroes. He's not meant to be a token, I think he's a pretty cool character on his own and if he gets a chance to shine, I think we'll see that--up til now it's mostly been potential.

But RotO was about good intentions and how even people with good intentions can destroy worlds if they're not careful, so he's been put in a terrible position--his faith in the gods is pretty much absolute, but it puts him in direct conflict with what he believes is right, like his respect for Diana and Hippolyta. I have a lot of sympathy for a person in that position, I think we've all been there where what we believe in conflicts with who we have faith in."

The story arc (issues 26-33, I believe ) has been collected into a trade paperback edition which will go on sale this coming Tuesday, November 10th. Aaron Lopresti handled most of the art, with Bernard Chang filling in on an issue or two.

Achilles

No indication he's looking for a Patroclus yet, but hopefully there'll be something to report on that front soon.

Gail Simone is awesome,

Gail Simone is awesome, hands down. Always solid super-hero storytelling with fun characters, and this storyline sounds fun.

Wonder Woman and Gail Simone

I love Gail Simone, and I love Wonder Woman, but somehow the combination of the two, while not bad, wasn't as exciting as I hoped it would be.  I kind of drifted away from the title, but I should really come back and give it another shot.

It just didn't jump up and grab me the way, say, Simone did on Birds of Prey and Secret Six, or the Perez or Rucka runs on WW.

Rucka on WW

I really did enjoy Rucka's political angle on WW a few years back before the title ended and relaunched with a number 1.  I too am not getting into Gail Simone's run thus far on the title.  I thoroughly enjoyed her run on Birds of Prey.  I'm finding the pace of the issues going at break-neck speed that it is kind of jarring to read some times.  However, I think the arc with Achilles has been better than Simone's first arc.  Here's hoping the title keeps improving as I really do like the character of Wonder Woman.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Nooooooooo!

but I don't like Achillies and evil Star-Trek uniform Zeus!!!! Now...I...still...won't...*curses stupid fanboy brain.*

Give me pretty pictures and I'll reconsider my position, but I'm still irked that Zeus killed Kane and gave his heart to Achillies when he made him.

Zeus, Kane and Achilles

but I'm still irked that Zeus killed Kane and gave his heart to Achillies when he made him

Gail has said that will be addressed a few issues from now. I liked Kane too! Though I'm more irked at Zeus than Achilles. Poor Achilles even got saddled with a political marriage to Alkyone; I'd say that's punishment enough.

Give me pretty pictures and I'll reconsider my position

Actually, I was thinking of doing a series of "spotlight" posts on gay/bi characters and couples (as well as gay friendly titles) to help increase enthusiasm and participation here in the comics forum, so there'd be a few scans there at least.
