Ep 22 "Favorite Son"

So comments? Thoughts? Opinions on this episode?

I found the blackmail issue quite bland and boring. It just became filler scenes. Why was the actor courted for this role, I'll never know. Didn't work.

Tommy & Julia had beefier scenes in this episode, but they should have had more scenes and more melodrama. In addition, the writers needed to include a funeral procession for little William. But we won't get that either unfortunately. This could have been such the tearjerker episode, but everytime it goes into the tearjerking moment, they cut away, so we never get the heavy feeling this episode is supposed to bring. In essence, the episode was never really hard hitting for me.

Btw, does the whole industry love the name "Lizzie"? It's like such the popular girl's name now.

Senator/Kitty front...I thought his proposal was quite fantastic and it was the only scene which I actually enjoyed watching them together because most times their scenes are bland and boring to watch. But this moment was the most interesting part. The only time Kitty & the Senator have any dynamism is when they are with the other Walker family members. Otherwise, they're pretty bland in general. In tonight's episode, they were given a brief but nice moment.

There were a few mistakes here and there. Major medical mistake with the premies. But otherwise, Ben Kruger & Dan Silk did okay for their first try at a major episode writing. Their dialogue was quite good except for a few lines which sounded "funny" and "weird".

Anyway, this is what I have to say about this episode.

What about my thought on Kevin? He's becoming the caricature of a character now. Quite sad. He had so much more potential to stand out. Oh well, there's always 2nd season. Hopefully they won't disappoint.

McCallister

I didn't watch the West Wing, but apparently Rob Lowe left b/c he wanted a bigger presence on the show.

It looks like he's getting it at B&S.  The show revolves around the Senator nearly as much as it does the Walkers.

I didn't mind the blackmail thing, other than they wrapped it up WAAAAAAYYYY too easily.

What I did mind was the visit to the VA hospital w/ Justin.  Kitty's favorite Republican is such a caring and genuine guy.  So much so that it made Kevin want to help out his nemesis.  Oh puuuhhhhleeeezzzeee.

Is Baitz a Log Cabinista?

Don't know Berlanti's politics...

...but I don't like it when his shows address politics. Jack and Bobby lost me because the politics didn't ring true for me (too many simplifications, IIRC) and the politics on B&S doesn't work for me either. I mean, it turns out McCallaster's vote for the marriage amendment doesn't mean he opposes same-sex marriage, it was just a vote he traded to get support for his education bill... and he regrets voting for a bill he didn't believe in.

There's been a couple other times like that where it looks like he holds a position we associate with the Republican platform, but then it turns out he doesn't really believe in it. (Wasn't there something like that with gun control?) For the most part, I get the feeling that we're supposed to see McCallaster as a noble, inspiring leader but I'd be more interested in seeing a character with plenty of flaws... flaws that influence his political choices.

(I just realized, I wish McCallaster were more like Heroes' Nathan Petrelli, who makes complicated decisions that you disagree with.)

There was one time that I thought the politics on B&S were written really well... in the 9/11 episode, I was floored at how they showed the panic and fear Kitty felt on that day and how it affected her positions afterwards.

I agree completely.

McCallister's politics simply aren't believable.

Kevin & The VA Hospital Visit

So, McAlister brought Justin along on a VA visit.  This visit seemed to put Justin in the right place (mentally) to go back to Iraq.  I think that's what Kevin appreciated more about McAlister's gesture rather than the fact that the Senator has a soft-spot for the Vets at the VA Hospital.

I think that's why (McAlister's actions for Justin) Kevin changed his mind and agreed to help the Senator.  And it's fine that they wrapped that ridiculous blackmail storyline up.  It was an isolated piece that showed Kevin's change of heart (per se) and didn't really need to focus on the dumbass trying to extort money from the Senator.

Log Cabinista. Ha!

I couldn't believe how lamely they wrapped up the blackmail storyline. Why introduce such dramatic information if Kevin can solve so incredibly easily. This is an example of how I think the show sometimes cheats. They create "problems" that are then just magically solved. Very annoying.

And I agree about Kevin. He really has become annoying, but I appreciate it has nothing to do with being gay. It's just who he is--and wait until you see him next week. It's no better.

I thought the scenes in the hospital were well done and Sally Field elevates anything she is in. My favorite moment, however, was Sarah and Joe explaining to their kids how they were separating. I thought the dialogue was extremely believable and the scene was well acted, but I thought Paige totally stole the moment. The little girl played it just right and is precocious enough that I totally bought the insightful questions she asked.

How about calling 'em

How about calling 'em Loggies instead?  Has a better ring to it, IMHO.

Re: B&S "cheating" - you're right, they do it quite often.  It's as if they have ADD or something.  Maybe they should be put on Ritalin.

Why would the story be over?

The blackmailer told Kevin and Kitty that even if he doesn't tell the truth, someone else will. I think that was a suggestion the truth will come back to haunt McCallister at some point.

I like Kevin. I don't really see how he's any more annoying than he was at the start of the show. What is so annoying about him exactly, or what makes him a caricature?

This site seems to hate Kevin so much, no matter what he says or does. No, he isn't perfect, but he's a good guy who loves his family and tries to do the right thing. Is that really that awful? It seems like people want a Pollyana character.

I think this was a great

I think this was a great episode, and I liked to see Kevin as a lawyer again. The fun thing is that I've read many, many comments on other sites where they recaped this episode and a lot of people said that they liked Kevin even more after this episode. Because we don't get to see him "work" that often, and I think he really lights up. I loved seeing him like that.

I agree that the scene where Joe and Sarah tells the kids was amazing. Made me cry. The actors are soo good, and especially the little kid.
