changing avatar?

How do you change your avatar? I tried but it didn't change. I deleted the old picture and uploaded a new one, but the old one still shows up. Any tips?

I changed mine recently.  It didn't take right away, but the next day, there it was!  Those avatar elves can be a slothful bunch.
