Hair Spray Ad and Banner On Top Of Page - Weren't Gays and Lesbians Supposed to Boycott This?!

I know how the Washington Blade feels (because I live near DC) but I seem to remember that After Elton telling us not to see Hair Spray because John Travolta is a member of Scientology which is known to be homophobic. Yet, there's an ad for this same movie on the top of this page. If I remember wrong, my sincere apologies. However, if AE did give opinions about the GLBT's boycotting this movie, it seems sort of incongruous to have an ad for it!

We never said anything about boycotting

Hairspray because of Travolta's being a Scientologist. We probably reported the news, but given how many gay folks are involved in the movie, I can't say that I see any reason to boycott it anyway. It was created by a gay man--John Waters--, directed by a gay man, and produced by a gay man. I'm more offended by Travolta's being cast because I don't think he can act and would rather have seen Harvey Fierstein in the role.

We reported...

That someone from the Washington Blade called for a boycott.

Double-standard from the Blade?

Is Scientology any more homophobic than Christianity? In fact, I would argue that it's less homophobic. I mean, are there any Scientologists who are trying to stop the Gay Rights movement like the Christian Right are?

So unless this guy from the Washington Blade is also advocating the boycott of all films with Christian actors, or Travolta himself has said something homophobic, I think there's a little double-standard here.

(BTW, I was raised Catholic and now I'm agnostic. It's not like I believe in Scientology. But I think all of the Scientology-bashing that goes on is a little unfair, especially since many other accepted religions also have you believing in stuff that's pretty unrealistic).
