Hollyoaks...not so bright a future on BBC AmericaAlthough it only started a few of weeks ago, things are not looking so bright for Hollyoaks. The 10:30pm nightly spots have been changed to 4:30pm daily as of August. And the Saturday weekend catch up has been dropped. Also, in a panic, a number of us fans have sent off Emails requesting time be given for the soap to grow and get a little buzz. Someone got an Email reply saying they don't plan on airing future episodes. The kiss of death i'd say. I'm terribly disappointed since I love the show and heard it only gets better. And the JP/Craig storyline is about to kick off, but may never get seen in the US, which is a pity because from what i've seen on Youtube, it's phenomenal. I guess I should have learned my lession after EastEnders was abruptly dropped from their lineup a few years back. I plan to never invest in a series again on BBC America since you most likely will only end up getting crushed. It seems unless the show gets noticed in the american entertainment media like Footballer's Wives, HEX or The Office, they get dropped way too quickly before ratings or recognition are given a chance to grow. I think what's really disappointing is that Hollyoaks wasn't given a chance to develop over time since it is a soap after all. Three weeks airing is nothing for a soap. And i'm suprised or assume, since no specifics have yet been given for the time change, that ratings wasn't better since there is quite a lot of fan sites and talk about the show and its pending storylines on the internet. Then again, internet buzz doesn't = success. I have complained to BBC America about the endless cooking and house decorating shows. and if it were possible to spare a 30 minute time slot for Hollyoaks around 7:00pm -8:00pm as I feel this would be a more suitable time for the show, but I doubt anything will come of it. I guess another show with wonderful potiental will be dropped. It's times like these when I am immensly greatful for Youtube. Submitted by Maxine (765 points) (216 posts) on Tue, 2007-07-10 19:01. |

"The 10:30pm nightly spots have been changed to 4:30pm daily as of August. And the Saturday weekend catch up has been dropped."
^ UH, and why are they doing that???? i don't get BBCA, but a few of my friends were excited for the jp/craig storyline.....it's such a great storyline too.....grrrrr BBCA!!!
I am extremely p.o.ed.
I am extremely p.o.ed.
For what's it worth, if it looked like you recieved an automated message it may be incorrect. After it was announced that they would be airing Torchwood, I sent a message asking if it would be edited or not, and I got this as a reply.
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We're delighted to learn
you've been enjoying BBC America and are always pleased to hear from
our
loyal viewers. Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that at this
time,
there are no plans to air new episodes of "Doctor Who" and/or
"Torchwood"
on BBC America in the immediate future. However, please rest assured
that
BBC America takes the opinions of viewers such as yourself very
seriously
and, as such, we will forward your suggestion on to the appropriate
department(s).
And we all know that BBC is still airing both shows.
Also, it'll be a moot point if BBC does drop Hollyoaks, but have they been airing the episodes uncut so far? I've been catching up on my DVR, and I noticed that Amy said the f-word and it got cut out. Are swears the only thing that BBC takes out?
Still hope...
Thanks for that Cylon. That reply is almost word for word with what was Emailed to a viewer about Hollyoaks on the BBC American forum. I haven't gotten my reply yet but i'll make you know if I get the same type of letter. Still, just seeing that there is this standard letter sent out as a reply makes me feel a little better. And at least they haven't yet dropped Hollyoaks without warning like many other shows such as Shameless, now just starting on Sundance channel, Bad Girls, now on LOGO, and the recent Hollyoaks spinoff, In The City. scrapped after a couple of weeks. So the powers that be may have more faith in Hollyoaks than I orgionally feared. Someone on the BBC America forum did suggest that maybe they want to capture some of the college audience which could be why they've choosen the 4:30pm time slot. Still, i've got my finger's crossed this show is still going a year from now.
I thought that with the new blood at the helm over at BBC America they would give new shows a little more time to grow. I mean, Hollyoaks has only been on for about three weeks with not one piece of publicity from any entertainment mags or shows. I'm greatful that Afterelton and a few other US web sites have even mentioned it. I hope we at least get to see the JP/Craig storyline play out as it is extremely popular at the moment over in England and will be coming to a conclusion in the next couple of months. I just hope we get to see it here in the States.
I do believe so far the show is seen in it's orgional version, uncut except for the swear words.
Oh for the lovvva....
So Garth Ancier comes in and admits one of the network's biggest problems is its unpredictable schedule, that their shows struggle to find an audience because they pull shows with little warning and debut them with insufficient pre-launch promotion. At some point they tune in and find a rerun of Cash in the Attic instead.
And then the start mucking with the schedule and making unclear communications with the viewers who try to contact them. Sheesh.
Here's a snail mail address I was able to find on their website:
P.O. Box 6266
Florence, KY 41022-6266
(Really, BBC America's HQ is in Kentucky?)
Well, I got a reply today.
Well, I got a reply today. It was similiar, but not word-for-word like the one posted on the BBC forums, to the one they sent to me about Torchwood (FYI, both were from BBC's Viewer Relations, but the Torchwood one was from someone called Irene, and this one was from someone called Barbara).
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. Although at this time,
there
are no plans to broadcast or videocast additional seasons/episodes of
"Hollyoaks" on BBC America in the immediate future, please rest assured
that your comments have been noted and forwarded on to the appropriate
department(s).
As always, for the most updated information about what is airing on BBC America, we recommend visiting the 'TV Schedule' page on our website,
BBCAmerica.com/tvschedule. It includes printable daily and weekly
schedules
and is searchable by time of day and time zone.
We thank you again for your comments.
I got a reply.
I also got an Email reply today from BBC America, and it does appear that there are a couple of standard reply letters with a slight variation which they send to anyone with questions. Here is what I got. And it's a carbon copy of yours cylon:

I think that if you ask about any show on BBC America then this is the reply you would get.
The schedule for August regarding Hollyoaks is just messed up since on 8/1/07 we have a new episode of Hollyoaks at 4:30pm, and then later on that night we have a repeat of an earlier aired episode at 9:30pm. I'm just wonder what they're playing at?
BBC America never explain why they do what they do with their programming schedules. They play with the viewer's heads, moving shows to different time slots and dropping them without any warning. I'm just hoping that the reason for them playing with the times of Hollyoaks is they want it to become a success, so they are trying to get the best viewer timeslot. I wish instead of having the half hours episodes from Monday to Friday they would just air it on one week night as a two and a half hour block from say 8:00pm - 10:30pm. I don't care which day of the week it would be on, i'd be in front of my tv set ready.
I just hope BBC America don't mess up on this one. Hollyoaks has the potiental to do very well for them.
My Reply...slightly different
Here's what I got...

I hope this is a good sign...I agree with all of you that BBCA needs ONE steady show, I often have to play catch-up when some show I enjoy shows back up as I drift off the network when the shows I like end the short UK runs. They should be looking for something that airs brand new week in and week out. As I said on the BBCA board I am finally at a place where I can push the show, it took me about six weeks to get hooked and learn the characters well enough to promote it to friends, it's a soap it needs special handling. I have read that the new president Garth Ancier (SP?) is going to work on the bizarre programming so let's hope this afternoon slot is a good thing! In a way I like it as the younger set that might enjoy the show's teen plots are going to be home and awake then with school starting again, can't see teens up at half ten watching soaps! My bedtime was 10! LOL!

Comments on BBC-A shows
I was very surprised when Hollyoaks showed up on BBC-America. BBC-A had just tried airing In the City, the Hollyoaks spin-off, and dropped it after only a few episodes. That's why I didn't even start watching Hollyoaks; I felt 99% sure the show wouldn't last. I liked In the City. I also was extremely annoyed when they dropped Eastenders a few years back.
Someone asked about editing -- BBC-A edits out nudity and the F word (not sure if that's allowed on these message boards even). Shameless has lots of both nudity and F-words, and is shown unedited on Sundance. Shameless was very edited the one season it was shown on BBC-A.
I've had better luck getting responses from the actual BBC headquarters in the UK when I write to them than people here seem to get from BBC-A. I've gotten 2 individualized answers to questions from the BBC. BBC-A seems to shut down message boards for shows they drop from the air as I imagine some of you have noticed.
With all the huge, screen filling ads they air during the actual shows on BBC-A, and the editing, they basically just serve as one big ad channel for shows you might want to get the DVD of. Hopefully the BBC will eventually enable people outside the UK to watch their shows directly on their website -- for a fee of course, but it would be worth it to me.

Nielson Ratings for HollyOaks?
Monday to Friday
Weekday shows are a mix of challenge and opportunity. You've got to invest in them because you're asking viewers to build a habit around your programming. However, once you've done that, you've got a reliable audience that'll come back again and again. BBC America needs a show like Hollyoaks because their schedule changes so frequently (since most of their shows run 6-8 episode seasons) and a Monday-Friday show is a spot where you create an audience that's always seeing your promos, always learning what's about to debut. If the network is re-considering Hollyoaks this quickly they're fools. Shows like this require a lot of time and promotion dollars before audiences find them and make them into a habit.
As for the actual ratings, it's really hard to learn for a network as small as BBC America. Usually, the numbers are just too small to casually follow, you'd need a long-term trend to really measure things.
As for MyNetwork TV, I think the only lesson to take from them is that bad promotion and expecting immediate results will get you nowhere if you've got a completely new product. Their first two debuts were pretty bad and then their second cycles (which were a big improvement) got little promotion. Plus, if they were trying to reach a young, hip audience they should have had someone uploading clips to YouTube like crazy (even the sleep-inducing Desire had moments that made the show seem interesting). I'm still surprised the gay romance on Watch Over Me didn't get noticed while it was happening, someone at MNT didn't have an idea on how to pursue buzz.

Good job...
Great job biffordmichael on contacting all those media outlets. I saw your posts over on the BBC America discussion boards and I can see you're a wonderful advocate for the show. I'm also a HUGE fan and have been telling everyone I know about it and to tune in at 10:00pm weeknights.
I almost had a meltdown the other day when I saw the schedule change. After they dumped EastEnders, i've never felt safe with their programming. Hollyoaks needs some type of exposure other than BBC America, who quite frankly do a lousy job of promotion. So it looks like it's up to the fans. And we are truly mad fans of this show who do not want to see it go away anytime soon.
What I don't like is the 10:pm -11:00pm time slot for Hollyoaks. I think this is just way too late. And I don't like that it's on every night, either. I mentioned earlier that maybe they could air it once a week for a couple of hours, or even twice weekly for one hour one day and then an hour and a half a second day at an earlier time slot. If Torchwood and Dr Who are sloted for primetime hours, then why not Hollyoaks? BBC America need to get their act together and make Hollyoaks shine.
And the JP/Craig storyline, which is now just starting over here in the US is not to be missed. I've seen gay storylines playout on other shows, but nothing like this one which has now spanned nine months and counting in the UK. I've been following it on Youtube, and like many fans have been revited as it's played out. It's the jp/Craig storyline which has given Hollyoaks the recognition it's now getting over in the UK. The fans are going crazy for this love story. I hope we get the opportunity to see it play out over here.
