News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

New "emo" bands and their "gay-acting".

I'm talking about these new bands considered(but certianly NOT!) "emo" such as My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, etc., and their habit of playing gay onstage and off. With kissing, touching, unusual displayes of affection between males. I'm not sure if any of you fallow these bands, but if you do, how do you feel about it? Personally, I think it does a lot of good and I really respect My Chemical Romance for their anti-homophobic stance. I love that band.

There was a really fascinating discussion about whether these presumably straight(though many of bandom members are suspect) people are exploitating gayness with these acts.

I really really suggest you read, whether you follow this "emo" scene or no. It was so intriguing. Thoughts?

It is Refreshing To See

Males being affectionate with each other in person.  Maybe North American society is getting less hung-up about male-to-male affection.  I don't see it necessarily as being gay or trying to win over a gay audience  (unless it is french kissing!).  The only arena (pardon the pun) where men have been able to show affection is in sports (slapping of asses in football, hugging in hockey and soccer after scoring a goal).  However, alot of men don't play sports or even watch them, so it is great to see it spilling into other areas of the entertainment field.

I guess I am not your typical middle-aged gay male, I am an avid sports fan and avid new music fan (I subscribe to Billboard magazine and listen to Live 365 internet radio) so I do follow the bands you mentioned especially Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance as well as AFI who has a very androgynous lead singer.  I also like MIKA, The Arctic Monkeys, Snow Patrol, Maroon5 and The Scissor Sisters.  For somebody who grew up with rockers (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Boston) it is nice to see more gay-friendly and less straight-male hetero music acts.

Cheers
