A Sneak Peek at Tonight's "Modern Family"

I need to ask

OK, I have to ask this question: Is anybody but me still watching this just because it has gay characters, and not because we enjoy it?

It's turned into a politics thing for me, or like taking vitamins. Between the "cool dad" and the mockmentary style, I'd rather go to the dentist, but I feel the need to support it.

I'm not saying the show is bad, just that I don't like it myself. I don't like the American version of The Office, either, which is also shot mockumentary, so it could actually be brilliant, and I'm stuck on the three camera format.

But is anybody else only watching it for the politics?

I love the show and the whole family.

There isn't one character on this show that doesn't make me laugh. I love Cam and Mitchell. I love the Jay, Gloria and Manny. I love Phil, Claire, Luke, Alex and Haley. Michael has also voiced his concern about Phil but I think it works. Especially after that little insight from Claire in the last episode.

There hasn't been an episode so far that didn't make me laugh out loud 3-4 times. And Each episode has even had parts that caught me off guard with the funny moments or quotes.

The cast blends well together. I'd have thought they've worked with each other longer.

I don't know why you'd feel the need to support it because it's actually doing well and has already been picked up. It's a hit for the network.

Modern Family

I am watching because this is the first comedy in YEARS that I actually laugh out loud while watching. This show is hilarious. I'd watch even if there wasn't a gay couple.

Especially last week, when Mitchell called OnStar: "We locked our baby in the car, and people are judging us!". Too, too funny. I actually had to pause the DVR until the hubby and I stopped laughing at that one.

Best part is, I find all of the characters to be very, very funny. Phil is the only character who could possibly get annoying. So long as they treat him like cayenne (a little bit goes a looong way) I'm in for the long haul.

Not me.

I love the show. IMO it's the funniest sitcom on TV right now. I'm hoping that 30 Rock will return to form and give it a run for its money, but as of right now it makes me laugh more than any other show.

I might check a show out

I might check a show out because of the "politics" thing, but I won't stay with it.  Watching a show doesn't have to have gay content for me, although it is a plus.  For example (and I'm going to get vilified for this), I tried Southland for the gay angle, but it did nothing for me so I only watched about 3 episodes.  Yes, you can lay part of the blame on me for its cancellation.

On the other hand, I am intensely engrossed in Flash Forward - and was surprised there was any gay content (one of the main females is lesbian).  But, I was a fan before I even knew that.

Modern Family is a great show for me.  I laugh out loud.  If there were no gay characters, I'd watch it (even though Jesse Tyler Ferguson is a draw for me - huge crush for a long time).  But, if it didn't appeal to me, I would quit watching it in spite of the gay characters.  I've never once checked out one of the soaps AE covers, because I don't like soaps.   At least not daytime ones.

Modern Family is just good comedy.  Smart, witty, well-written and well-acted.  And I even like Phil - probably because I've known people like him.

On a side note.  I LOVED Snicks description of his magic experience.  My mother still tells the story of how many umbrellas I ruined as 5 year old trying to fly like Mary Poppins.  Interestingly, I didn't ruin a single broom trying to be Bert!!!

It's why I started watching

I gave it a chance at first simply b/c it had the two gay dads...but I've stuck with it b/c I think that it's absolutely hilarious. It definitely has its moments where I think "Really....REALLY?" but overall I find it really enjoyable.  For me, I can't stick with a show long term if I don't like it, even if it is gay friendly.

Of the several shows I enjoy

Of the several shows I enjoy on Wed-Thurs (The Middle, Cougar Town, Parks and Recreation, The Office, etc), Modern Family is the one I look forward to the most.  Like others I had to pause it a couple times until I could control my laughter after the car thing last week.  I do enjoy all the characters, especially Cameron and Mitchell and Gloria, and for all his weirdness, the Too-Cool Dad really did, in his own way, help his wife accept Gloria as her step-mom.  It charms me and makes me laugh.

Also, and I feel weird saying this where it might get seen, but Jesse Tyler Ferguson looks well-fit in those photos.  Well-fit.

I'm watching it because I really like it.

I don't watch a lot of TV shows, but I'm enjoying this one.  It's a new format to me, because I haven't watched anything like it before.

I like all the actors, maybe the actor who plays Phil the least.  But his character's not appealing to me, so that could have some influence on the way I feel about him.

I'm disappointed there's not much affection shown between Cam and Mitchell, but there isn't much between Claire and Phil either, so I guess it's not just because of the "gay" factor.

I'm gonna get your back...

The "cool dad" is painfully, painfully unfunny. What the wife would find attractive, interesting or funny about him is anyone's guess. I just find him creepy and annoying.

As for the gay couple, I find them to be way-over-the-top cliches. Sorry, but I do. Yes, I am aware that this is a comedy, and not real life. It doesn't change the fact that I feel no connection to them as people.

The only saving grace is Ed O'Neill and Sofia Vergara. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't bother watching. They have real chemistry together, and both are very funny. When she told him the story of how she used to dress up her son in girls clothing, it was the highlight of the show.

Modern Family

I love this show so much. It quickly became my favourite show on TV. I started to watch because of the gay couple (and they’re still my favourite) but after the first episode I loved all the characters even the cool Dad with his awkwardness. Gloria is the best female character on the show – love her accent (is it true it’s Sofia’s real accent?). I think the show his hilarious and I often lol.

Why I watch Modern Family

I don't watch it regularly; more along the lines of "while I'm in bed, hungover or relaxing and I need something to kill time on the internet with...".  That being said, it's the only show I watch that could be considered a comedy, it's the only one that's a half-hour and it's the first sitcom I've seen in years and years that I actually laugh at because it's smart-funny, not "OMG look at teh stoopid hooman trick!?!!!111".

Sure, politics plays into it and I probably wouldn't have ever given it a snowball's chance in hell to gain my viewership (I'm a really bad tv snob, btw) if it didn't have a gay couple on the show.  But it's humor plays into the type of humor I like, so I will watch it if the mood, or hangover, strikes me.

Modern Family

Rocks!!

Like other fans, I was first attracted because of the creampuff trailer and of course gay dads.

However after the first episode, I realised that it was more than the gay couple but everyone in the family was too funny and sometimes touching - "so that you could run a plane into his head as well",  the colourful "life" that Gloria gives to Jay, "And now you step on it", Dylan's singing, when grandma was there and discussed her sex life, Phil's supposed-Dad teaching him a lesson when the bike was missing.... too many fun moments!!!

ABC better not fuck this up!

Oh, Mr. Kennedy, I have to

Oh, Mr. Kennedy, I have to disagree with you. I definitely don't watch the show just because of the gay characters, Cam and Mitchell (who are awesome by the way). The creators struck gold with EVERYONE on this show. From Claire and her doofus husband, Phil. Their kids. To Jay and his hot wife, Gloria, and her weird son, Manny. I haven't seen a comedy like this where I like and laugh at every character in years. If the show can stay as razor sharp witty as it has been from that first week, it has a fan in me for a long long time.

I kneel before you all

I guess I kneel before you all in shame then, because I cringe more than I laugh. I'll just chalk it up to yet another personality disorder to seek treatment for. *sigh* Some shrink's going to send kids and grandkids to college off of what's wrong with me.

For the record, I never liked Seinfeld either. I do like Big Bang Theory.

Jeremymlad's picture

Well...

Seinfeld's bluh, and Big Bang Theory is yay, so you're spot on there.
