New Music Monday! The Year In Gay Music!

Instead of our usual preview of upcoming releases, we decided to take a look back at the year’s CDs, EPs and singles from gay and bisexual artists, and boy were there a lot of them. In fact so many, that I’m probably going to upset some of you by missing one of your faves.

Consider it a blessing that in 2009 we have so many out and proud artists producing quality work that we can’t possibly cover it all!

From Idol auditions way back in January to the release of his debut album this past month, the year seemed to be dominated by Adam Lambert. He’s been our media darling from the beginning (or at least since his “official” outing in Rolling Stone), and for good reason. As one of the only pop stars to come out before releasing an album, he’s breaking new ground as a gay celebrity.

But would we be enjoying Adam Lambert now if it weren’t for the original gay idol, Will Young? His compilation album, The Hits, covers his career, one that includes sales totaling over eight million records, and being voted as the U.K.’s favorite artist of all time, twice!

To be sure they’re not the only out pop stars who made headlines in 2009. Remember that Mika guy? On September 22nd the bi singer came out the same day as his sophomore album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, did. Then there’s The Pet Shop Boys’ newest album, Yes, which only solidified their status as a pop icon.
