"To Anyone I Offended:" How Does Tracy Morgan's Apology Compare to Other Celebrity Mea Culpas?

"I apologize to anyone who was offended."

Aah, that passive-aggressive non-apology apology. We've become used to seeing it in press releases after celebrity f**k-ups, but now the world seems to have caught on to how meaningless a statement it is.

These days, it's not enough to just go through the motions. In 2011 we require more than a token statement when a celeb tries to convince us that something was "taken out of context," or is "not what's in my heart."

Tracy Morgan is the latest apologetic celeb, and he seems to be working the hell out of his apology cycle, from meeting with GLAAD and GLBT teens, to loving a hypothetical gay son, to going back to the scene of his anti-gay tirade to apologize there.

His eagerness to make amends means he's either truly sincere in his apology ... or he's scared sh*tless about the future of his career.

Considering that Morgan has made homophobia a part of his stand-up act for years, we're going with the latter. But we have to give him props for the amount of energy he's spent trying to convince us that he's sorry, which is a lot more than we can say for some other celebs.

Let's compare Morgan's road to contrition to some other infamous mea culpas. How do they stack up?

And more importantly, are they as bullsh*t as we suspect Morgan's apology to be?

Mel Gibson

In 2006, Mel Gibson went on an anti-semitic and sexist tirade after being arrested, he said, "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," and calling a female officer, "Sugar tits."

He released an impassioned apology, which included:

"The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God’s child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith."

Heartfelt words, but too bad he didn't feel that way when he refused to apologize for the antigay remarks he made over the years.

That, coupled with the violent drama with his ex-girlfriend, make his apology and promise of honoring his God a bit ... dubious.
