Tracy Morgan Apologizes for Anti-Gay Tirade: "I'm Not a Hateful Person." Facts Say Otherwise.

Tracy Morgan

This morning we mentioned that 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan had come under fire for a very homophobic routine during a recent stand-up show in Nashville. During his performance, Morgan reportedly said he would kill his gay son if he whined about being bullied, claimed that being gay is a choice and, well, it goes on from there.

Now Morgan has issued an apology, saying:

I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.

Given that this isn't the first time Morgan has spewed such homophobia under the guise of entertainment, including during an episode of Scare Tactics, this apology doesn't exactly ring true. Nor does it seem sufficient in light of Morgan's history of anti-gay bigotry.

Frankly, this reminds me of when Michael Richards from Seinfeld went on a racist rant during one of his comedy shows. The reaction from Hollywood to Richards' racism was swift and unequivocal, and Richards' career still suffers to this day.

And that's exactly what should happen to Morgan. Given that NBC's president is Bob Greenblatt, a gay man, here is hoping the network takes appropriate action against Morgan. It's highly unlikely that this kind of intolerance would be tolerated when aimed at most another minority group and it shouldn't be tolereted here.
