Doug Blasdell: Work Out's Openly Gay Role Model

AE: Did you have any idea what you were getting into with this show?
DB:
I had an idea. But when I took the job here's what was most important to me: to portray a gay man as a healthy guy who is somewhat good looking and normal. Not over the top gay. That's important because Hollywood doesn't show that a lot. Then they bring in Jesse who is more Jack on Will and Grace. I'm glad they did in general because it makes me more “normal”, and I want to portray a real gay man for those people in Nebraska that are afraid to come out.

AE: Because they need role models, too.
DB
: Not everybody's like Jack on Will and Grace. I also wanted to show that you can be in your 40's and still have a good body and have a healthy life style. I know a lot of forty year olds let their body's go. You can have great abs and be forty-three. You just have to work out two or three days a week. And I saw it as an opportunity to be a role model. I have no family members left in my life, so I'm not going to hurt anyone if something went wrong.

AE: Is the show all real?
DB:
I think a lot of it, all the way up to the last episode, depicts real life gym. Especially an LA one. There are a lot of stars. And a lot of strong personalities. And most trainers want to be actors. So, they have big personalities and big egos. That comes across in the show, even with Jackie. Jackie is a strong personality.

AE: What are you doing now?
DB:
I'm a fitness director at Train with Hollywood. It's a private gym in LA. Trainers never focus on one gym. We have our in-homes. And we normally cover like three gyms.

AE: Tell us about your work out philosophy regarding touch?
DB:
After being in this for twenty-two years, I found that most people--men, women, straight, or gay--all they want is attention. It doesn't matter if they're some beautiful actors or somebody with teeth going in 20 directions. Everybody wants love. Some of my movie star clientele especially want attention.

If I was gonna tell you to be a trainer, my biggest advice is to touch your clients at least 30 times through the hour and I guarantee they'll come back. Stretch them or rub their shoulders. It's the same thing in my spinning class. I try to talk to at least 10 to 15 people. I'll get off my bike and touch their butt. Even the women loved to be slapped on the butt. It goes a long way.

AE: What's your advice for people wanting to get in shape?
DB:
You have to make the commitment. That's the biggest point. Whenever you are trying to get stop drinking or changing a diet, you've got to really want to do it. No weak commitments. The number one thing is commitment. If you can do that, you've done 50 percent of the work.

AE: Lastly, we know Jody Watley is one of your clients? Is she cool?
DB:
We're actually like brother and sister. We spend a lot of time together. I'm going to train her son this summer. He wants a build. He's not too confident. My goal is to make him feel good about his body. That's what my dad did with me.

What a great guy!

I just found out today about Doug. I've loved the show Work Out since it started. I think Doug seemed like a great, down to Earth kinda guy. My heart broke for him a couple of weeks ago when he was training his EX 'cause he was going to be on dialysis. So sad... it seemed like he really had strong feelings left for him. For all of Doug's friends out there, I am truly sorry for your loss. He will be missed. ---- Margate, FL

Heart broken and saddened

I am so heart broken and sad. I just watched the most recent episode last night of Work Out on Bravo, and on the episode it was mentioned that Doug was in the hospital and in an induced Coma. I thought I'd get on line today to do some research on him, and to my sad suprise and dismay I found out he passed a few months ago. He seemed like a sweet, real, caring, and a kind human being. He is the type of person I aspire to be like. Doug, you will be missed. We need more real caring people like you in this world. I pray you are at peace and with GOD almighty. If you can by some miracle see what I posted here, please know I send you much love. SGS Los Angeles,CA

Shocked and saddened

Doug was truly special. I just started watching and saw the episode where he was training his ex who was ill. How ironic that he's gone. Doug was a great role model and example of how to be kind and giving and make a contribution to society, regardless of sexuality or eye color or any other personal trait. It's just too bad that he wasn't here longer, but how fortunate those were who knew him. Sympathy to those he left behind. - Columbus, OH

What a warm, caring person

I started watching "Workout" last season, and I was touched by Doug's genuine caring and compassion for others. I am a straight man and I feel that the world is a lesser place without him.

Heartbroken :(

I just found out about Doug from the Bravo website. I am soo shaken about him gone. Of all on the show,he was my favorite. He seemed like a great guy to know. I liked his compassionate and caring heart for everyone. What a strange 'twist of fate' that he should go like his parents did. May we all learn to be more like Doug. RIP Doug. I will miss you terribly.

He was a hero to me.

I watched Workout just to see Doug. He was always so masculine yet sensitive. They way he treated his fellow trainers and his clients impressed me. He was a gentleman. I will miss him and strive in my life to be more like him. Rest in Peace Doug! You deserve it.

A Beautiful Man!

I recently just started watching Work Out. I instantly noticed Doug and how he was just such a great person. He is great looking, smart, funny, and everything you would want in a person but can never find. It has broken my heart to see an amazing person like Doug pass away soo young. I dont even think I can continue to watch the show without you man. I know your memory will continue to live on.. Rest In Peace Dougy....

Sadden

I can't believe that such a loving human being like Doug is gone. He was a very sexy man, who loved life. I enjoyed watching the show, especially to see him smile. The last time I saw him on the show was when he was helping his ex-boyfriend get in shape. My heart goes out to his everyone that loved him. R.I.P Doug

Awful

It horrible that a gentle soul like Doug was taken so early. He didn't understand all of the petty bickering and posing among people. I always thought he had really sad eyes. You could see the pain in them, but he soldiered on and made something good out of his life in his committment to help other people. He will be missed by all of us who love the show and most of all by all of his friends. Thinking of you Doug wherever you are. XOXOXOXOXO

SHOCKED

Like many of you, I would watch the show because of Doug. Not only was eye-candy, he seemed to be a very sweet man - genuinely willing to help others without a selfish bone in his body. After watching the episode where he got sick, especially when he said that his birthday was a milestone because his parents didn't make it past 43, I quickly googled him. To my surprise he had passed away in Jan. His passing was untimely, senseless and I was truly saddend by the news. It's unfair!! I'm happy that the world had a chance to meet him via TV and our thoughts are with all of his friends who knew and loved him - especially everyone at SKYsport!!! Y

Sad and Shocked

I just found out about Doug's passing...he was so handsome and vibrant looking with a big heart it seems. It is a shame not to have known this sooner, but I just saw the preview of the upcoming show today....my heart and prayers are with him and his family and friends.

GODSPEED DOUG BLASDELL

God must have needed a special trainer in heaven to have taken such a gentle soul as Doug. He embodied the very essence of what most of us were taught at a very early age... the golden rule...to love one another as we would love ourselves. I really wish I had been given the opportunity to have known Doug. Even so, my heart just aches, because I know what a special person the world has lost... a real angel. May Doug's kindhearted spirit live on in all those lives he managed to touch throughout his short lived journey here on earth. My heart and prayers go out to all who knew and loved Doug. Peace be with you all.

a tragedy

doug seemed like the type of guy anyone can get along with and become friends. He was in great shape at 43 and had a great head on his shoulders. I hope hes in a better place. And i pray for his friends. The world has lost a great role model....

He'll Most Definitely Be Missed!!!!!!!!

I just found out last night after watching Work Out. I cried like a baby! He was the most sweetest, humblest (is that a word) person I'd ever seen! Heaven is happy with him there.
nordic balance's picture

Doug's passing - I didn't know, but now I do....so sad....

I am not a person who watches this show...but I felt so bad about such a vibrant person leaving in his prime. When I saw the preview this evening...I googled it and read it on bravo. What a loss. Proves that no matter how healthy, beautiful, or humble, there is not a predictor or "safety" net from death. Who would have thought such a vibrant personality would be gone...his legacy is obviously "do what you love while you are here, be who you are, and make people believe in themselves." He did just that....we all need to be reminded of how arbitrary that life is and that perhaps tomorrow will be too late to do what you love. Thats what I think he left to all...whether a fan of the show or just a reader of his wonderful spirit. He's now part of the wind at our backs...

Farewell Doug - Till One Day....

Doug Blasdell was an amazing person on Workout. I never thought he had enough airtime really. Not till the last couple of episodes before he ended up in the hospital. I read about his death in the newspaper the day after he died and stood there with my mouth open for a while before I just burst into tears over someone I have never met. I had no idea he had that kind of effect on me from watching the show. I am a HUGE fan of the show and Doug is someone who could be everyone's friend. I was so looking forward to the second season, but after reading about his death in Jan, I was wondering if I would still be interested. I found myself glued to it once again and I cried along with Brian Peelers as I knew how he felt. I have lost a couple of good friends too. God Bless the cast! We miss you Doug! Richie from Kansas City, MO.

REST IN PEACE DOUG

WHAT A GREAT HUMAN BEING, DOUG WAS. WE NEED MORE CARING PEOPLE LIKE HIM IN THE WORLD TODAY. SOMEHOW, IT SEEMS THOSE PEOPLE ARE TAKEN FROM US, WHILE THE EVIL ONES STILL LINGER. THERE MUST BE A HELL OF A GOOD REASON???? I READ WE ARE ALL HERE FOR A REASON, A PURPOSE IN LIFE... IF WE TAKE A LESSON FROM DOUG, IT IS TO BE MORE KIND AND COMPASSIONATE, WITH EACH OTHER, TREAT EVERYONE WITH RESPECT, PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING AND LOVE, HOW YOU WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED. I LOVE ALL THE PEOPLE ON WORKOUT, AND MY SYMPATHY IS WITH NOT ONLY DOUGS FAMILY, BUT JACKIE AND HER TRAINERS, I NEVER MISS WORK OUT AND TRULY THINK THEY ARE ALL GREAT! I FEEL LIKE I KNOW THEM ALL AND I LOST A GREAT FRIEND. GOD BLESS

I Just Found Out...

that Doug is my cousin. What a terrible way to find a family member, after he's lost. My Mom grew up with him but they lost touch years ago mostly after Doug's mom died. My mom was watching Bravo when they mentioned his name, they were talking about his memorial, she didn't even know he had died. I am so sad I missed the oppurtunity to have such an incredible person in my life but maybe it's easier to have never known him than to have known him and lost him. I watched a couple episodes of Workout and he seems like the most incredible guy, I know he'll be missed. www.myspace.com/heatherpistulka

YOU WILL BE MISSED!

WHAT CAN BE MORE "NORMAL" THAN DEATH? YOU'VE TAUGHT SOME OF US TO LIVE AND DREAM BIG AND TO LOVE WITHOUT CONDITIONS. IT WAS A VERY SAD MOMENT FOR ME WHEN I LEARNED OF YOUR PASSING AND COULDN'T HELP BUT TO CRY (EVENTHOUGH I DIDNT PERSONALLY KNOW YOU) BECAUSE IT REMINDED ME OF WHEN MY MOTHER DIED AT 37. IT'S AMAZING TO LEARN HOW WE ARE TRULY ALL THE SAME. MUCH LOVE TO YOUR FRIENDS AND ANY FAMILY MEMBER(S) THAT YOU LEFT BEHIND- I WISH THEY FIND COMFORT, STRENGTH AND COMPASSION IN THIS MOMENT OF SORROW. AND THAT THEY KNOW YOU'RE NOW IN THAT BETTER PLACE CALLED HEAVEN. YOU WILL BE MISSED!
