Alejandro Rey with Sally Fields in The Flying NunAE: There's quite a few gay characters on TV right now. Are you following anything in particular?
JS:
Brothers and Sisters I watch. I love that show. I used to love the Flying Nun and then years later I had an affair with Alejandro Rey.[Carlos Ramirez on The Flying Nun.] Did you know that?

AE: Oh, is he out?
JS:
He's dead. He died of cancer a million years ago. This was when I was in my 20's.

AE: Oh, my gosh. Wow, that's an exclusive, huh?
JS:
I guess so, yeah. Go ahead and print it.

AE: Next thing you know you'll be in one of those William Mann books, (joking) Hollywood: The Closets. (laughs).
JS:
(Laughs) That's the new thing, I'm in so many books now, everybody wants you to tell a story and be in a book. I Killed, I'm in that book, the comedian's book.

AE: When you were with Alejandro, he was much older than you?
JS:
Oh, yeah.

AE: So how did you meet him?
JS:
Driving on Sunset Boulevard, I said, “Oh, my God that looks like Carlos from the The Flying Nun, and it was. We started to chat and we set a time and got together and started hanging out.

AE: And did you realize he was gay when you first met him?
JS:
Um, yeah. (laughs)

AE: Did you think that from watching him on the show?
JS:
No, no.

AE: So just from meeting him in person?
JS:
He was cruising me.

AE: Did you have a short term relationship or a fling?
JS:
It was around a year, but we never went anywhere because he had a son and, you know, it was a different time. We spent time at each other's homes.

AE: Was he still acting then?
JS:
Oh, yeah, I think the last thing he did was The Grace Kelly Story with Cheryl Ladd.

AE: Was part of staying in because he was closeted?
JS:
Oh, very closeted, but so was I. I was in my early 20's.

AE: Perez Hilton is outing a lot of people. Do you check out his site?
JS:
Yes, I have.

AE: What do you think about outing?
JS:
Well, it depends. If somebody calls you on the phone and says, “Do not out me,” I would not do that. But if you know someone's gay and they are, and you report about them, whatever they're doing, then there's nothing wrong with doing that. Unless somebody says, “Please do not out me,” and they tell you not to.

AE: I'm not against what he's doing. I think if every one of these famous actors came out, it only would make the world a better place.
JS:
I think I agree totally.

AE: It would open people's eyes to how many stars are gay or lesbian.
JS:
Unless somebody tells you not to. Why is it a bad thing to report on somebody being with somebody? That's reporting. What's wrong with that? Unless someone specifically tells you not to. Is he the one who outted T.R. Knight?

AE: He outted Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris). He's writes a lot about Anderson Cooper, Queen Latifah, Jodie Foster, but none of those people have actually confirmed anything, which I think is funny. I'm surprised some people cave and some people don't. But maybe the difference is some people are like, “I'm glad it's out.” Weren't you kind of like that when you came out?
JS:
Well, I did it before all this was happening.
