Interview with "Ugly Betty"’s David Blue

AE: As I said to Michael when I interviewed him, Ugly Betty is truly one of my favorite shows because it’s a comedy that can turn on a dime and pull on your heartstrings out of the blue when you don’t even see it coming. I want to see more of that with the two of you.
DB:
The first couple episodes, I was concerned at first. I wanted to make sure that America, the world, would have patience because there was a lot of us arguing back and forth because we were trying to get this relationship on the road, get it going.

And then I was really happy with the way people responded to the third episode, because that was the payoff, I think. That was where you were like, okay, they actually are a couple. And I’m hoping that it continues in that way where you get to see a real interaction, a real relationship, not just constant bickering. And on top of that, and by the way, just on a side note, thank you and thank the site. You were the first really to pick up on me getting cast in the role, so before I ever even shot, you Googled my name and you were one of the first ones to put a photo up say that I got cast, so I’m thankful for you guys just still being curious about me.

AE: We’re curious about you because you’ve done a great job with the role, from his gay aspect to what kind of human being he is. Last week we had a reader’s poll and you’ve been getting quite a few votes, which is great for a character who hasn’t even been a regular on a show at this point. You’ve made an impact and done yourself proud.
DB:
Wow. I don’t know of any other word than humbled, to even being included on the list, let alone getting votes. That’s amazing and a testament to the writing. I’m not even about to take credit for it because if it wasn’t for Michael Urie and Becki Newton, my role wouldn’t be nearly as nice.

AE: I think Ugly Betty truly shines as an ensemble and it seems like everybody has really been generous with everybody else, all working to elevate the show to what it is.
DB:
Not to speak out of hand, but I went to an event recently and they had accidentally forgotten to write down my name. They were announcing on the stage that we were there to raise money for a foundation and Christopher Gorham was there and he just picked up the microphone and said, “Oh, there’s David Blue from Ugly Betty,” and completely introduced me, and that goes to show you, on set and off, how great this cast is because they care about each other, they support each other and they’re incredibly talented and hard working.

I really think that Cliff

I really think that Cliff is a positive role model for kids trying to find their sexualities but who don't see themselves in the various gay characters on television. Having those character is good but identifying with Cliff can really help those kids feeling confident about their look and interests without feeling that if you're not slim and not "fashionable", you won't fit in the community nor find a nice good looking boyfriend.

I was an overweight kid back then and would have really loved having Cliff on my Tv on 1997. ;)

We Want Cliff

David Blue has been a great addition to Ugly Betty this year (the casting agents on that show are brilliant, btw), and hopefully he'll be around for some time.  His "makeover" in the wedding episode was a highlight of an already great episode (his entrance to "I Believe in Miracles" was priceless).

Interesting that he mentioned Christopher Gorham, as I could see Cliff and Henry becoming pals on the show.

Here's to more Marcliff!

David Blue is sensational.

He's such a great contrast, not just for Marc but everyone on Ugly Betty. He's a calm centered character in the midst of practically non-stop frenzy. And all us Ugly Betty fans knew there was a nicer guy inside Marc struggling to get out. And that's the guy Cliff has fallen for.

What a radical concept for TV

have a gay character on it that does not fall into easy sterotypes but tries to be himself.  Gives me hope for the future.

Cheers

substantial gay character a delight

it takes maturity, substance and confidence to be comfortable in one's own skin and David Blue's character embodies that in a gay context, which is sorely missing (and often missed) in popular media.

in the age of "The biggest losers" and "Project Runway," it is not only refreshing but critically important for a show that is heavily themed around the "looks" industry to demonstrate what makes a person shine is not just what is reflected in the mirror, but what comes through their behavior.

David Blue mugged?

I came across this article just now---don't know how old it is, but I assume it's true.  A shame...
