A Revealing Interview with "Project Runway"'s Jack Mackenroth

AE: Handicap the remaining contestants for us. Who do you think is the best and, well, the not so best?
JM:
I can't really comment because I know the final four. But my personal favorite is Christian. You can already see from the first few episodes that he's extremely talented. So I'm definitely pulling for him. I don't want to say who I don't think is so good.

AE: I'm not surprised. We were just saying how classy you've been on the show, not dissing other designers like some folks.
JM:
That's not me. I just didn't want to be that person. They say TV lives forever and I didn't want people hearing me say so-and-so's design is ugly. Maybe it makes good television, but like I said, I don't want to be that person.

Christian is only twenty-one and doesn't edit what he says. And he says what other people are thinking.

AE: I don't mean this negatively, because I think she's kind of interesting, but is Elisa as, um, different as she comes across?
JM:
She is really that way. Actually the show made her look more normal. She's delightful but definitely speaking another language.

AE: And what's up with Ricky? Why does he keep crying? Were all of you secretly teasing him when the cameras weren't around?
JM
: The thing is he's crying in all his interviews, but we never really witnessed it. He did cry with the one client who lost the weight, but as designers we were watching it [the episodes] and going "My God! He's crying all the time."

He's an easy crier, I guess. He seems to cry at the drop of a hat and always be wearing a hat.

AE: Since I had to wait a whole extra half-hour for our interview [Jack was running late] can you give me some scoop on your cameo in the Sex and the City movie?
JM
: It's funny — everyone thinks it happened because of the Sarah Jessica Parker challenge [Parker appeared in and helped judge one episode]. But it actually happened because I had a friend who knew the casting director. My friend called up and said they were looking for a gay guy with a good body and that I should go meet the director.

So I went to the address. They were shooting on the street and the director said to walk up and down the street. He said I was perfect and to come back the next day and that I'd be shooting will all four girls. I came back and I sat in a make-up trailer for an hour getting my tattoos covered up and all the girls came in and introduced themselves. Kim Cattrall. Kristin Davis.

Sarah Jessica Parker came in and looked at me with an expression that said "How do I know you?" I whispered Project Runway which we couldn't talk about since no one knew.

AE: Why did you have to have your tattoos covered?
JM:
Oh my God. I had to kiss my on-screen boyfriend and he was supposed to be dressed kind of conservative so I had to look kind of conservative.

AE: You have a kiss in the movie?
JM:
Oh, yeah. Full on. My boyfriend was played by a straight guy. John Frey. He actually looked kind of nervous about the kiss because it was no pat on the back. It was a romantic, full-on kiss. We had to do twelve takes. He was a nice guy, and after five takes he was fine. His girlfriend was on the set and she laughed and clapped after each one.

AE: What was the context of the kiss?
JM:
The scenario was that four of them [Parker, Cattrall, Davis, and Cynthia Nixon] are walking down the street and I come around corner and pass in front of them. Kim Cattrall checks out my ass or something, but I'm not looking at them. As Kim goes past, I go into my boyfriend's arms and we kiss. Kim makes a comment, something like "That explains it."
