Relax “Brothers & Sisters”’ fans: Kevin and Scotty are in good handsBreen finds one aspect of the internet especially interesting. “I’m really curious about spoiler culture because I always, with shows I love, I mean obviously I don’t get to do that with this show, but the minute I hear “na-na-na-na-na” – meaning gossipy spoiler chatter – I don’t want to know what’s happening. I don’t want it to ruin it. So it’s always fascinating to me to think, ‘Wow! There’s a whole other pleasure that’s detective work.’ And then it’s kind of interesting to watch people get upset about things that are going to happen in the future that they might or might not understand how it develops. Intellectually it’s kind of interesting, like what’s the pleasure in knowing what’s going to happen?” However, both also worry about the downside to that culture or more specifically as Schapker describes it “What I feel like is affecting TV, and maybe it’s more like the critics point of view, is the 'jump the shark' culture. I find that hard because it’s looking for the moment when you fail. It’s looking for the moment of betrayal, and when the show lets you down. And it’s kind of an all-or-nothing . . . I almost want to say like a bad relationship. Where it’s like, ‘I’m outta here. You suck. Like that was so bad, I’m not watching again.’ And I think as somebody who’s trying to tell a story over, you know our dream is five to seven years, we’re going to be trying things that don’t work sometimes. Or sometimes we’re telling a story that we really believe in and we need to take this turn to earn where we’re going and we hope that people will give us the benefit of the doubt to stay with us, at least for a while, to see where it plays out. And I think if there’s anything where I have to put blinders in being a showrunner, it’s that kind of feedback.” Breen and Schapker have been working in for television since 2000 and they’ve been a team that entire time. They started out on Unauthorized Brady Bunch: The Final Days, landed on Charmed, Alias, and Lost before making their way to Brothers & Sisters. The duo was elevated to the position of showrunners at the end of last season, making them two of the few women to have scaled such heights in Hollywood. Additionally, Breen is a woman of color, making her achievement that much more noteworthy in the still very white world of Hollywood. Given that both are minorities in a world still dominated by straight, white men, the duo are eager to credit Brothers & Sisters executive producer Greg Berlanti for having giving them their most significant break to date. As to why Berlanti chose these two women, obviously he finds them very talented, but Schapker is quick to say, “Greg likes strong women.”
Greg Berlanti Indeed, Schapker feels that dynamic between a straight woman and a gay man is central to her own life. She elaborates saying, “In my entire life, I feel like that relationship has been at play … because I think that women who have a challenging relationship to their femininity or their sexuality can feel so vulnerable or weird. I think that gay men have the same figuring out to do, but differently, in terms of who they are. And while it’s not the same and I wouldn’t want to in any way say that there are experiences that you equate, it’s not surprising to me that a gay boy and a straight girl who both have problematic relationships with straight men would gravitate to each other to help figure things out. And I think that’s a dynamic that I have benefited from for most of my life. And so to find a workplace where a show has been created by Robbie Baitz, where Greg Berlanti is the executive producer, where none of these people are frightened by difference.” Breen agrees adding, “It’s kind of like what we were talking about with politics. It’s like there is a way in which, and this is not to mark any individual people we’ve worked with, but straight guys can see that this is the way it is. This is what’s normal. This is how things run. These are the kind of people who run shows. And then you’re trying to sort of push a difference in there, but it’s seen as different [by them]. Whereas I feel like with gays and lesbians, blacks, women – you understand there’s difference. Difference is a given! There is no way of being in the world that isn’t from a particular perspective, so it’s just what perspective do you bring to the table? There isn’t that normative identity that it’s like, ‘I’m the universal perspective that can write everything’ versus ‘you’re the specialized perspective that can write from a black woman’s voice.’” Schapker adds “That’s another thing that I’d like to say – if there’s anything subversive about our staff writing the Walkers [the show has been criticized for beeing so white], it’s disproving that. You have all these diverse people writing that family. They’re not just writing about who they are.” And it’s that diversity of perspectives that should keep Kevin and Scotty two of the most authentic gay characters on television. Okay -- ALL shows should
kevin and scotty
Kevin & Scotty's "Reversal of Fortune"
Torn.....
Okay, I think it's great that there's a real and on going romantic relationship between two men and we get to see the relationship unfold and have been deal with a variety of issues. It's great, it really is. And I'm a huge fan of Brothers and Sisters. But.... while I like Scotty and I like Kevin, I don't care for them as a couple. And I've never bought their relationship, especially the decision to get married, which seemed to me sudden and not well thought out given their messy history. Still, I am glad that the show is treating them like a 'normal' couple, dealing with the same issues and problems any couple would, which is amazing and incredible and all that stuff, so I'm setting aside my own feelings about them and just going with it.
If I were going to kill off a major character it would be Tommy. Talk about a total bore! And if he were to die they could easily write out his duller than dull wife Julia. And Tommy's death could create one great story point. Sarah would have to return to the family company to run things with Holly, which would create scores of bitchy and ugly conflict between these two women.
I also wouldn't miss Saul if they bumped him off. He doesn't interest me gay or straight. But I'm glad they're giving the old guy a BF. Everybody needs love.
love & hate
Oh I love and hate this article! It makes the next days even harder to get through and I have been dying to hear more about the upcoming season! Just can't wait for B&S to come back. God knows how many times I've rewatched Season 2. Good job to the writers. I would say, don't really worry about what the fans say - we will always have one million opinions. For myself, I have no complaints at all except I hope they will stay together forever. SCOVIN forever!
I kind of agree with Anthony about Tommy leaving the show. Belthazar can totally work things with Sienna Miller. =P Also not to mention if he (and/or Julia) dies, it brings up a whole chapter of how Kevin and Justin will deal with Elizabeth.
Sarah definitely needs to be given a stronger role this season - you can't waste Rachel's talent. She doesn't get nominated for Emmy's for nothing! Kitty perhaps should retire a little bit more, with Robert.
Keep up the good work the writers and showrunners - we will always support you who support us!
Kevin/Scotty
I am glad to read that they care as much about Kevin/Scotty as I do. I am glad with the spoilers I read so far.
I would like their relationship to be a stable one. Not without drama, but stable, Not that the first bump in the road will make one cheat on the other.... which seems to be the Walker-solution no 2 to everything, after getting drunk.
I also hope that Saul finds a partner. It would be nice to see him in a relationship as well.
I don't really want to lose anyone in the cast. I even like Julia and Tommy as characters. (Not referring to Getty's choices in real life) The character I could so do without is Ryan. I was very curious about Rebecca, but Ryan... not so much, the spoilers about him don't excite me, what I read about his character we already saw before in other characters and that went nowhere either. So if he could get hit by truck, I couldn't care less.
A Terrible Show That I Can't Stop Watching
From episode one, this show has been a shrill, ridiculous cacophony of over-the-top caricatures and unrealistic-bordering-on-insulting shenanigans. And when it’s not so “throw your hands in the air” preposterous, it becomes totally predictable. It’s a silly dichotomy. Worst offense? Easy - even with a cast that includes Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths, it is one of the most clumsily acted shows on TV (and, you guys can love your Kevin & Scotty all you want - it won't take away the fact that these two have about as much chemistry as Obama and McCain that is actually sometimes painful to watch).
Yet, watch I do...I came across a 3-Star review in the Daily News today of the season premiere that states: "For two years, "Brothers & Sisters" has been by far the most irritating prime-time television show I've felt inexplicably compelled to voluntarily watch." How true that is.
He also wrote, "About halfway through Sunday night's season premiere of "Brothers & Sisters," I wanted to strangle every character on the screen" which is pretty much how I've felt every single episode I've ever watched, and sure to be true this week too.Yet, watch I do. And watch I will.
Do I have something better to do on a Sunday evening? Who knows? I’m too busy watching “Brothers & Sisters”.

Here's hoping they kill off
Here's hoping they kill off Julia... how this character survived into the third season as a CONTRACT player is still one of television's greatest mysteries. Outside of the scenes when she gave birth, she's had a total of like 5 lines since Day 1.
Ooops..
I am actually looking forward to Saul's storyline more than to Kevin and Scotty's!..
I love coming out stories and first love jitters. Can't wait to see how they will deal with Saul's love life! Yay!

A modern day Falcon Crest
I like to think of Brothers & Sisters as a modern day Falcon Crest: a silly soap opera about a constantly bickering California family that is overshadowed by its more popular lead-in program.
The one difference is that Falcon Crest embraced the soap label and went full-tilt into melodrama, whereas B&S wants to deny its genre and seems almost apologetic--and thus less effective--when it gets melodramatic.
And, yeah, unless Julia is going to shoot somebody at one of the parties and then go on the run disguised as a nun, just get rid of her--she serves little purpose, and killing her off would give Tommy something to do other than argue with the rest of the Walkers.

wow...
Thinking About It...
Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure it is Tommy who is going to die.... the show pretty much told us that. Saul will have a story, so will Kevin and Scotty. There's no way the show would kill off any of the it's major female leads, so we know it's not Nora, Sarah or Kitty. And Holly brings way too much conflict and tension to the show to get rid of. I don't see them offing Justin or Robert or Rebecca..... which leaves Tommy, who has always been boring and the least interesting of the Walkers. But his death opens up major storyline, such as Sarah going back to work for the company as I already mentioned. Plus, the show writers mentioned in the article that the issue of Elizabeth's paternity is coming up. I don't think that would happen unless there was a major crisis or situation. Tommy dying certainly would be that. Justin and Kevin would be interested in being a father to a suddenly fatherless child. And given that the writers also said that Scotty and Kevin won't be parents anytime soon, that means Justin will turn out to be the daddy, giving him plenty of story for his character.
So yeah, it's Tommy who is going to die.
Alas poor Tommy....
...you were never well-written.
I agree that he'd be the leading target. They haven't used as much more than Holly's tool for a long time now. The whole storyline with Julia's post-partum depression and his affair with Lena fell kind of flat. Beyond that he's mostly there to defend Holly whenever Sarah gets angry at her.
Killing off Julia would be a ho-hum kind of thing as she's barely there anyway. Rebecca and Justin are the show's appeal to the early-20's demographic so they're not going anywhere. Saul's another option, but it would also be rather ho-hum as little as we've seen him. Robert is central to Kitty and Kitty is central to the show. Nora and Sarah are likewise core audience faves.
I think Kevin and Scotty have enough story options as a newlywed couple.
Since Tommy is the obvious
Since Tommy is the obvious one to die, he most likely will not die. Maybe his wife will die.
For purely selfish reasons, I don't want Justin to die because I think he is the cutest brother.
I really wouldn't care if Saul died. And though I'd love Holly to die, I doubt she will since Ken Olin her husband is one of the main producers.
Maybe after Kitty gets a baby, Rob Lowe will die.
Boo to the Saul Haters! Cheers to Monica and Alison!
"Wouldn't care if Saul dies"?!!! One of the most interesting characters on TV, played brilliantly and sometimes tragically? You guys are some coooold bitches!
CHEERS! To Monica Owusu-Breen and Alison Schapker for caring, and for daring. And I hope you two gals DO read this -- you are doing an awesome job, and not only your presence, and your writing, but your words allay the fear I had of the show being "de-gayed". CHEERS!
Meanwhile, much as i love Kevin (and much as I all-caps LOVE Scotty!) it is Saul who keeps them from being the token gays. His story is hope that it is "never too late" for anyone to be who they are. Keep Saul's story alive!
Saul
I don't think he's a bad character, I just think that since we see so little of him that killing him would be of minor notice to most viewers. Let's be honest, we find him interesting as a gay man coming out late in life. This is very new and interesting - to us.
But to a straight viewer it's probably kind of ho-hum. He doesn't do much else on the show these days and so he's kind of like Julia, which is to say rather in the background.
Saul vs Julia
Saul could be a great character but the way the part is written, he really adds little to the show. He's constantly morose and negative. Maybe the script writers are preparing us for him jumping off a bridge or something. I just think this is a missed opportunity and certainly a waste of a fine actor.
Now that people have brought it up, Julia would be a good character to kill off. She is 10x less interesting than Sarah's former husband.
Actually.....
Status of Kevin and Scotty's marriage
Ok, so Kevin and Scotty had their committment ceremony before the California Supreme Court decision overturning the ban on gay marriage, which made me wonder about what would happen with their relationship when the show came back this fall (i.e. whether they would actually make it official or if they had just been understood to have done so). In a post-Proposition 8, shaken world (and California, where the show takes place), my question is:
does anyone know whether or not Kevin and Scotty still are, or ever were legally married and what the legal status of that is?
I ask because "Brothers & Sisters" tries to keep up with the headlines a lot and b/c I think it's relevant b/c I'm also wondering about the status of those marriages in the real world.
