Interview With "As the World Turns'" Jake Silbermann

AE: Soaps are obviously known for their steaminess and the episode from last week where you and Van are shirtless and end up in each others arms fits the bill as steamy. Can fans expect to see more of that between the two of you?
JS:
You'll just have to tune in and find out. [laughs]

AE: Actors often say romantic scenes are awkward to play. How do you and Van approach them?
JS:
I think they're only awkward if you lose touch with where the character is coming from or who he is. Those scenes are important. Those moments are what romances are built off of. I personally don't find them awkward whether they're between me and Van or me and Alex. As long as it's coming from a real place, it's not awkward.

AE: Luke and Noah finally kiss tomorrow. Does Noah realize he is actually gay then or is he still trying to figure things out?
JS:
Noah is definitely still trying to figure things out, and in some ways, the kiss brings up a whole new set of questions for him.

AE: Noah is very different from Luke who knew he was gay for a long time whereas Noah seems to be just figuring it out. Do you know anyone who went through something similar? Did you talk with someone gay for advice on how to play the role or what Noah might be feeling or thinking?
JS:
No, I didn't seek out any advice because I don't think it's really any different for a straight person or a gay person who is feeling these things. I think everybody understands the idea of being confused by the feelings that they're feeling.

AE: How do you think Noah's dad is going to react when he learns the truth?
JS:
I think we can expect a very negative reaction from Noah's dad.

AE: Can you give us a hint about what's next for the two of them?
JS:
The story is really about to just pick up. After the kiss, it's really just beginning for them. I think there's a lot of great stuff on the horizon. I don't want to hint too much because part of the fun is not knowing.

AE: Conflict is drama, as they say, and that's especially true on a soap opera where anything can happen. What would you like to see happen between Luke and Noah?
JS:
Hmm. Drama is the best thing for a show, but I'd really like to see the characters move along with their relationship. I'd like to see them experience the same things a lot of the other relationships on the show have experienced.

AE: The scene when Luke came out to you was well written and you guys did a great job of acting in it. Have you ever had a friend come out to you?
JS:
No, actually I haven't. Not to me. Not the way it happened between Luke and Noah. I have had friends who have, over the course of growing up, come out.

AE: Today's youth seems much more open minded about gay relationships. How do you think the older audiences will respond to the storyline?
JS:
I don't know. It's definitely different for everybody, but I know I've already been contacted by people who wish this storyline was around when they were younger. We're dealing with a lot of things that they've experienced in their lives.

AE: Folks would like to now more about you. How old are you and where are you from?
JS:
I'm 24. I'm from the New York area, the East Coast.

AE: Did you always want to act?
JS:
When I was younger, actually, I wanted to draw for comic books.

AE: Do you still pursue that?
JS:
No, not really. I let that go a while ago. I doodle, but that's about it.

AE: Single? Dating?
JS:
I'm single.

AE: Any other projects in the works?
JS:
Not at the moment. Right now I'm just concentrating on this storyline.

AE: Thanks so much for talking to us, Jake. We're looking forward to seeing where this story goes.
JS:
I really appreciate that. I just hope you all are enjoying it and I'm doing the character justice.

Finally an interview with Jake

Great interview! Obviously Jake knows how to handle himself as a professional actor. The fact that everyone at ATWT keeps saying they are treating this storyline like every other storyline (the storylines move slowly-it is how the genre works at least in America) makes me happy. It should not be a big deal. Just another well done storyline.

In Retrospect.....

The show did get a lot of flak initially because viewers felt the show was moving the Luke/Noah plot too slowly. For awhile there we only saw Luke and company once a week and the show was spending more time developing the relationship between Maddie and Noah than Luke and Noah. I didn't like it either. But when you think about it the show had to do that because it is a triangle. Now things are picking up, we're seeing the players more often and the story is becoming as messy and angsty as some of the other stories. There's even some heat and passion, which quite frankly I did not expect, but that's due to the actor's natural chemistry. Maddie and Noah have chemistry as well and they'd make a cute couple under other circumstances. I still wish Luke/Noah were on more, but now that we're getting to the meat of the plot, we hopefully will. Like Jake said, the story is just beginning. Luke and Noah have much to learn about one another, there's Maddie to deal with, the reaction of Noah's father and all that not to mention now Lily and Holden will handle this. As the show hasn't veered from the sexual aspects of this plot, it'll be interesting to see how they deal with the point when Luke and Noah have sex, especially since Luke is a virgin. And the writers may have ideas that we haven't even thought about yet. I had my doubts, particularly since so much of the rest of the show is, quite frankly, awful. But so far the show is doing this right and I might, just might, be on the verge of trusting them.

Pacing

I think the real complaint, however, with the slow pace of the Luke/Noah/Maddie storyline is that the rest of the show wasn't interesting enough and, therefore, they were getting bored. I mean, how long has this stupid kidnapping of JJ storyline been going? Hollyoaks was quite a surprise for me because the burning of the Dog in the Pond took up only one episode -- on an American soap, there would have been two (or three) weeks of Sam Owen lurking around menacingly, a full week for the Dog to burn and a whole month devoted to the aftermath. Overall, pacing is a problem for ATWT, I've been following the show for a couple years and one thing I've consistently seen in ATWT fandom is frustration with the pacing where one storyline dominates, but nothing happens day-to-day while another storyline makes one appearance every week (or every other week) and makes the same amount of movement.

Bravo!

Very nicely done, Josh. You left me wanting more but not feeling like anything I needed to know about this young actor and this role had been left out.

And I'm especially pleased to see you picking up a lot of very positive buzz on other websites for this piece.

Thank you

Thanks Mick! What sites by the way? That's great that the interview is getting positive buzz. Jake was a really nice guy and took time out of his very busy day on the set to talk to me. I was impressed with him.

A long time coming for daytime TV

My grandmother used to watch ATWT through my entire childhood.  She lived with us and I only every remember watching it when I was home sick from school.  I thought it was lame, lame, lame.  I was a GH watcher.  I don't recall ATWT ever having the clout that GH had with the Luke and Laura story line and GH has won best soap several times in the 80's and again in the 90's and 00's.

I heard about the Lucas and Noah story line by accident.  I started watching ATWT and immediately began taping it only about a month ago. Now I am hooked.

Watching Lucas brought back so many memories of my own coming out in my teens.  Van plays it very real and I  can identify so much with his attraction to "straight" guy Noah.  This is the first time ever on TV or any other media, that I found a character that actually represents who I am, what I feel, and how I think.  This is an amazing time.

I don't know where this whole story line is going but I hope they continue to play it for real and not worry about what right wingers might think about a realistic gay relationship being played out on TV.  Wouldn't it be great if Lucas and Noah became the next soap Power Couple - well, mayber someday.

Thank you to the ATWT producers and writers.

Luke, not Lucas

I don't want to come across as nitpicking, RSC in Maine, but Van's character's name is Luke, not Lucas.  It's short for Luciano.

But anyway, I echo all the others, nice interview!

Well they finally kissed today

And it was just lovely!
RSC in Maine's picture

Luke, Not Lukas, sorry!

As I mentioned I only started watching ATWT a few feeks ago.  As someone learning Italian, I wish I knew his name was Luciano, that's even sexier.  I won't make that mistake again and thank you for pointing out my mistake.

I just watched Friday's episode and could not believe it.  Not only was the kiss in the final scene sexy, it was tentative, urgent, filled with chemistry, and above all, real.

As I said earlier, what an incredible thing it would be if Luke and Noah became the next soap Power Couple.  Filled with adventure and intrigue, battling the odds, and through it all, their love holds them together. That's a true soap story.

One can only hope.

SPOILERS, SPOILERS, SPOILERS!

For those who wanna know, here's what happens next week with Luke and Noah (and Maddie)....

SPOILER ALERT!

Luke and Noah's kiss is interuppted and Noah tells Luke he only kissed him to play with his head (make your own dirty joke here). Later, when Noah sees what a positive effect Maddie has on his relationship with his father, he asks Maddie to move in with him. Maddie is pressured by Noah and Col. Mayer into agreeing to it. When Luke hears about it, he decides to tell Maddie about the kiss, but stops when he sees Noah's dad eavesdropping. When Noah gets there, Col. Mayer wants to know what Luke was going to tell Maddie. Luke comes up with a cover story. Later Noah confesses to Luke that he wanted to kiss him then and wants to kiss him again, but he can't be gay because of his father. Noah begs Luke to keep mum about what happened between them and Luke agrees.

oh. my. god.

He's gorgeous! Honestly, he's the reason I started tuning in on the Nuke storyline [primarily on youtube.com, of course].

Thank you so much, Josh!
