AE: So season two then, do you get to have more fun?
JB: Yeah, season two is going to be different; the humor will be back in Jack. The one thing that really struck people was his attitude — his carefree attitude, let's say — when he was on series one of Doctor Who. Russell T. Davies had to establish in series one of Torchwood the dark side of Jack because he had a lot of issues he had to resolve and questions that he wanted answered. In the course of series three of Doctor Who those questions are answered, so when he comes back to Torchwood he's a much lighter guy. Still determined at what he does, but more fun and likes to poke a little more fun. And, do a little more poking.
AE: Are you ever going to kiss David Tennant?
JB: I don't know. [Smiles mischievously] I haven't yet … on the TV series.
AE: So how hot are the scenes for this season with James Marsters and you?
JB: I know his quote about it and yes — you will have to finish yourselves off after you watch it. Let's put it this way: It took us twelve hours to film.
AE: Would you like to see Captain Jack settle down with a nice man?
JB: Captain Jack might settle down with a nice man in series two, but which man that will be I can't tell you.
AE: So is the affair he had with Ianto last season still in the running?
JB: I don't know … maybe.
AE: How is Captain Jack's relationship with Owen this season?
JB: Much better. They've resolved things and are having a good time together. Something happens to Owen in series two and it solidifies their relationship. Jack sees himself as something of a father figure to Owen.
AE: I would like to see Jack and Owen hook up. That would be an interesting switch on the relationship.
JB: Would you? Well you never know, it just might happen. One thing about all of the boys in Torchwood: we're all well balanced. We're all omni-sexual. We all realized the other day when we were changing that we were all “well proportioned” and we have decided that is a criteria for all males who come to the show. The girls have to have big boobs and the boys have to have big … egos.
AE: John Barrowman you are naughty! Of course, I was kind of expecting you to be.
JB: Of course I am! I'm honest. You could put whatever in print.
AE: Let's get back to the kissing David Tennant question. You kissed Christopher Eccleston. So would David do a kiss?
JB: I kissed Christopher because Jack was going off to die and that was a love for the Doctor as a person, but I think now Captain Jack does fancy David's Doctor. It's revealed in series three of Doctor Who because Martha Jones says something about liking the Doctor and I turn to her and say something to the effect of “Oh, you too?” So it's clearly out there. But I don't think they will kiss.
AE: I think for fans it's a toss up between whom to lust after more: you or David Tennant.
JB: Well, they can do both! There's nothing wrong with that. [Laughs] You know what David's nickname is? Well, let's just say the Doctor would fit in with the men on Torchwood.
AE: In the first series of Doctor Who Captain Jack was naked and cleverly hid a gun in a unique place. Will there be more naked Jack?
JB: Yes, in series one he hid a gun in his ass. [Laughs] Not at the moment you won't, because John Barrowman hasn't had time to work on his love handles. I've been enjoying life too much. That's what happens when you work too many hours and can't get to the frickin' gym. So no nudity for Captain Jack for a while. But let me tell you that scene was fun to film in series one; that was my idea to pull the gun out of my ass.
AE: You come from the theatre and musicals in particular. Are we going to see Captain Jack sing this season?
JB: No … I've said to Russell that I'd like to do a musical episode, but that might be copying what everybody else has done too much. I'd love to do one. I think it would be a great idea. Maybe Captain Jack could be infected by a musical alien or he is masquerading as someone in a show to capture another alien.
AE: How many seasons will it take the entire Torchwood team to shag each other, since everyone got a bit of a start this last season?
JB: Five. [Laughs] No, I think it'll happen before then. Some of the characters might die before then, though.
Torchwood airs on BBC America Saturday, September 8, 9:00 PM ET

David Tennant's nickname
OMG..I need a cold shower
You're kidding me right....
Um... we couldn't list the sex toys? Seems like silly self-censorship to me.
I can't WAIT...
to watch TORCHWOOD. I think this will become my all time favorite show! I am counting down the days!!!
THANKS FOR THE AWESOME INTERVIEW: I loved every "inch" of it!!
:)
Oh How I Love John Barrowman!
However much I love John
However much I love John Barrowman he pissed me off with this quote:
<<< Also, the period it was set in, because a lot of the older people have said they didn't do that [engage in homosexuality] in their day. No, actually they did, they just didn't talk about it. That's like saying, “We didn't have suicide in our day.” My response is to tell them to shut up because they did, but they just didn't talk about it. >>>
I'm sorry but the only problem I had with this episode was the fact when Jack kissed his namesake, all the people in the background wouldn't be looking in awe or smiling at what was indeed a very beautiful kiss. In that time, a lot of the people, especially the 'manly' and homophobic soldiers (because yeah mostly everyone was homophobic back then) in attendence would be looking on in disgust and I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't rush in to beat the real Captain Harkness up when Jack jumped into the time portal. I assume that what the 'older people' were referring to was the fact that the reaction of the people watching was not believable because not a lot of gay men would ever kiss in public back in those times, and if they did they would be basically committing social suicide. They weren't saying that there weren't gay men at all in those days. So I totally disagree with John there. Don't tell the older people to shut up, that's rude! They do have a point.
Other than that, brilliant interview. Lovely tit bits about Torchwood...though it's going to be majorly uncomfortable watching John Barrowman and James Marsters go at it if my mom is watching. She does like Torchwood you see, but I can almost predict she'll get up and leave the room at that point. Not that she's homophobic or anything, but she doesn't feel particularly comfortable watching anything that is really sexual, let alone James Marsters and John Barrowman...we all know how they are like when it comes to sex. [Buffy and Torchwood respectively]. Phew, I'm getting all hot and bothered thinking about their 'clinch'. Can we actually call it that? Lol, it will probably be something far raunchier than that! ;)
I disagree
There really are a lot of people who think homosexuality did not exist in their day, because they never saw it. I doubt Barrowman would have said the people didn't believe homosexuality existed back then if they were only talking about the kiss. And I don't see the point of saying it's "rude" to tell older people to shut up. That assumes a) he actually meant he tells them to shut up and b) all older people are sweetness and light and deserve respect. Some of them are very virulent, nasty, bigoted people.
There was some debate at the time about the other reactions to the kiss. I really think that because of the vortex and all the distraction, they may not have even seen the kiss, they just saw the two men dancing together. The episode was also a fantasy, as the whole show is a fantasy. I've never understood why it's difficult for people to suspend disbelief on this show and Doctor Who, considering the shows are about supernatural and sci fi and time travel.
Er...suspend your belief in
Er...suspend your belief in terms of time travel and aliens e.t.c. But there's still got to be an element of truth in everything that the actors do. I should know, I've acted a lot myself.
Er...also it is rude to tell people to shut up. I'm on the verge of telling you to, but that would be rude, obviously. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, nobody should be told to shut up.
Rudeness
I think it's actually much more rude to say "I was going to tell you to shut up but that would be rude" than to just say it. It's odd to me that you would even want to tell me to shut up because we don't agree on a topic. That's a far cry from what John Barrowman is talking about.
I also think that there's no real way of knowing he actually meant that he tells people to shut up. I think he was speaking generally.
"But there's still got to be an element of truth in everything that the actors do."
There was an element of truth in the scene.
JB is Amazing
Thanks Sean for the great interview. There are a lot of YouTube interviews with John. Take a look and you can see all the characteristics that makes him one of the hottest men in show biz.
I haven't had a celebrity crush like this since I was a teen ager. John just makes me drool.
Have to go...must find napkin.
<<< There was an element of
<<< There was an element of truth in the scene. >>>
Er...no there wasn't. As an actor you have to take into account, the given circumstances. 1)Who am I? 2)What am I doing? 3)Where am I going? 4)When am I? 5)What are my objectives [the why]? Let's take a soldier in that scene for example:
1) + 4) I am a soldier in early 20th Century Britain. I have been socially conditioned to believe that it is unnatural and totally wrong for two men to kiss, have sex and show any intimacy of any kind to each other. Not only is it unnatural but it is also illegal. It is a punishable offence.
2) Partying at a social occasion. I have to follow certain societal rules.
3) I will be going to war tomorrow.
5) My objectives are to enjoy myself, relax and stand by the rules that I have been taught as a soldier and as a citizen of Britain.
Therefore, if the actors in that scene were doing their job right (not to mention the director), they should not be just standing there smiling in awe at two men kissing at this social occasion, in this period of time. They would at least have a look of disgust on their faces.
I wanted to tell you to shut up because I know I am right and you are wrong. But then I would be hypocrite because that's one of the reasons why I was disagreeing with John Barrowman.
The show mentioned that
Part of the point of the episode is that these are people who could die at any time.
While that doesn't mean soldiers back then were making out, it does mean that they were under special circumstances. I'm not even sure how much the people saw, because the two of them were near the vortex, and the light was probably blinding everyone.
The moment was a fantasy anyway.
If we want everything to be realistic, then they'd never be in a time travel setting.
I guess we'll agree to disagree. Thanks for the talk though, you made some good points.
