The Gay People’s Choice Awards Winners!
After weeks of polling and thousands of votes cast, the readers of AfterElton.com have selected their favorites in Film, Television, Music, Internet, as well as their favorite gay celebrities. Unfortunately, our planned star-studded Gay People's Choice Awards ceremony at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion had to be canceled due to the writers' strike. And then the backup plan to have winners announced via televised press conference was also nixed when our master of ceremonies, the esteemed Pat O'Brien had to drop out due to rehab scheduling conflicts.
We have no choice then but to announce the Gay People's Choice Awards winners right here on AfterElton.com. Drumroll please...
It was a landslide victory for Johnny Depp, who received 36% of the votes in this category. In second place, Matt Damon made a respectable showing with 22% of the vote. Among the write-ins, the most frequent names were James Marsden, James MacAvoy, Jake Gyllenhaal, and yes, Zac Efron!
It was a close race amongst the women with Jodie Foster eking out a narrow 11 vote victory over newcomer Ellen Page. Foster's win comes as something of a surprise since her only film performance this year, The Brave One, was hardly a critical darling. Of the thousands of votes received for favorite female movie star, a few write-in candidates cropped up quite frequently and deserve mention: Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie, and Meryl Streep all have a strong fan base among our readers.
Hairspray, a remake of John Waters' 1988 cult classic, took
top honors, proving that gay fans do like their musicals. But the independent film Juno captured a
phenomenal 22% of the write-in vote. The quirky teen pregnancy comedy was devoid of GLBT subject matter, and yet it clearly struck a chord with gay fans.
