The Gay People’s Choice Awards Winners!

No contest, it's Ellen DeGeneres. First she dethrones Oprah as most popular talk show host and now she wins this. It's her greatest year ever! Among the write-ins, the lovely Jill Bennett was a standout.

Favorite Gay Reality Show Contestant: Project Runway's Jack Mackenroth wins. Not bad for a guy who had to withdraw after appearing on only a handful of episodes. Most popular write-in candidate was Jack's fellow Project Runway 4 contestant, Chris March.

Favorite Gay Couple: John Barrowman and Scott Gill — impressive considering Gill isn't really a public figure. However, Barrowman has been exceedingly forthcoming about their relationship, frequently discussing it interviews and in his recent autobiography Anything Goes. Meanwhile, many other gay couples have chosen to keep a lower profile. Most popular write-in couple: Darren Hayes and Richard Cullen.

Nice list. I'm happy to see

Nice list. I'm happy to see Neil Patrick Harris win those categories and I like most of the winners. I'm not a big Jack Mackenroth fan, but it's nice that Chris MArch got the most write-ins.

It is really heartening

to see so many out and proud gay entertainers. Three decades ago this was an idle dream. Now it's an everyday reality.

John Barrowman

John Barrowman definitely should have been a listed choice for best out male celebrity.  I realize that he's not as famous in the U.S. as he is in the U.K., but he a is a very visible figure in the U.K. gay community whereas Neil Patrick-Harris is only emerging as such in the U.S.  Some of us still remember Neil's initial remark after coming out about not being an activist.  I think he's lionized more because we have such a dearth of out gay celebrities in the U.S. rather than any other reason.

Barrowman and Gil definitely deserved best couple.  I think that the fact that Gil isn't a celebrity is immaterial, and indeed even suggesting that this somehow lessens their relationship reflects a certain celebrity elitism.  But celebrity couples (straight or gay) are often wracked by drama and have short lifespans.  I think that a large part of why John and Scott have been together so long is because, rather than despite, the fact that Scott is not a celebrity.  John has commented directly that Scott is a stabilizing influence in his life.  Celebrity "aristocrat" couples often die a bloody death beneath the weight of their competing egos.

There was a cute video on YouTube (now sadly removed) of Scott being interviewed (and looking somewhat intimidiated at being on-camera) in the audience watching John perform on Dancing on Ice.  I think it's very sweet the way he was there to support his husband (though he did make fun of his costume).

They are a great role-model couple for gay people.

Good choices

much less controversial than the top 10 gay TV characters!  Johnny Depp was an excellent choice (and not just because he was mine) due to his amazing acting ability, good looks and gay-friendly attitude.  Jake Gyllenhaal is not quite in the same league yet in terms of acting but he is rising fast.

I would have selected Juno if I had seen it, it is my favourite movie from 2007, but I just saw it in the last couple of weeks.  I was pleasantly surprised at how good the remake of Hairspray was since I loved the original.

I must admit that I prefer Mika to Rufus Wainwright, but it is always nice to see a Canadian do well.  Americans have also warmed up to the quirky Feist if the # of write-ins is any indication.

Cheers

Wow - I wish I were a betting man...

...because I would be quite a happy fella now. Because nothing on this winners list is remotely surprising - it's all absolutely conventional. The only shocking thing is that Jake Gyllenhall wasn't even on the list, let alone victor...but then again, this isn't Towleroad's Choice Awards. Speaking of, it was delightful to see that his blog won. Andy's is one of the very few worth reading on a daily basis.

'Hairspray'? Check. 'Brothers & Sisters'? Check. "Ugly Betty'? Check. Any of these deserve it? Of course not! But that doesn't matter! Sheesh, voters, could you BE any more predictable?

blog winner

I'm not surprized that Towleroad won for best blog, Dlisted and Perez? Please!

How about blogs that actually inform about people and events like Queerty or Joe My God? I know that some people are a little celebrity obsessed, but have a little taste people.

I'm not blunt. Everyone else is overly vague.

Denzel

Sorry to see Denzel on the list at all.  Handsome he may be, but I recall clearly a story that Will Smith told Mr. Washington:

It seems Mr. Smith was appearing in the film "Six Degrees of Separation" when he was set kiss Anthony Michael Hall's character.  Mr. Smith made them shoot the kiss on a "cheat shot" which meant their lips never met.  Will Smith bragged that he'd already been paid for the film and there was nothing the filmmakers could do about it.  Will Smith said "Denzel Washington told me "Don't you be kissing no man".

That excludes him from my list of nominees.  Actually both of them.

Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.

Barrowman and Gill

I'm more than pleased to see that John B. and Scott G. were voted the favorite gay couple.  Scott has said that the public eye is not his thing at all, but that he tolerates it because John loves it.  I hope that continues.  The more time Scott spends out in public with John, the more he'll be seen and recognized.  I hope that doesn't complicate anything because I want them to be together forever!

Gee. . . Ya Think?

Yes, I concur. You were "seriously remiss" in omitting John Barrowman from the Male TV Star and Out Gay Celeb categories.

I'm forever amazed how some people continue to severely underestimate this talented man's off the charts Charisma Factor.

Please save your readers from future write-ins by automatically listing him in any category containing the following words:

Favorite . . . Sexiest . . .  Beautiful . . . Dashing . . . Talented. . . Shapliest Tush . . . and, most importantly . . . ADMIRED.

Hairspray!?!? Are you joking!?

I cannot believe the travesty of a musical that was Hairspray won favorite movie...*gags*...any self-respecting musical theater fan should recognize that that mess of a film version was just that...a mess! Especially John Travolta's horridly botched drag job! I mean, puh-lease! He looked like a damn polar bear in that God-awful excuse for an Edna Turnblatt ensemble! And what was with that affected, nasal voice? No, no, no.
