AE: What do you think kept it from being picked up theatrically?
SS: Lack of imagination. What does she [Duke] say in the film? Something is quite gray, or something? You know, when she comes back from the business meeting? [Doris tells Bernard that her advisors can’t help living in a world of gray due to their lack of imagination.] I think that you are dealing with bankers, and bankers are all of a banker mentality and that isn’t always the best person to pitch something that’s a little outside the box.
I have been worried myself because I like the movie and I think it’s really sweet and I like what it says, and I was worried about throwing it to the wolves now and seeing what was going to happen. I’ve been so happy that the response has been pretty much . . . unless they’re keeping the bad reviews from me, I haven’t heard one negative response yet. I hope that gives HBO the encouragement it needs to really try to make it into an event so people can find it.
AE: Where do things stand with Colossus, the movie you are attached to with Ian McKellen?
SS: I don’t know what has happened with that because that’s a friend of ours who is directing that. I didn’t even realize that was what it was called. Ian and I go way back and I’ve learned so much from him, and I would love to do something that he’s attached to. Sean Mathias is also a friend, an old friend, but I don’t know what’s going on with that honestly because that director is now directing, has commitments with theater and it’s hard to get everybody’s availability at the same time.
AE: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us and best of luck with the film.
SS: Thank you!

Great interview
But she's An Immortal Goddess so of course it's a great interview. What a career -- and it's far from over. She seems to be one of the few American actresses that's being allowed to mature and remain a star. This is common in europe with Charlotte Rampling getting moe work now than she did when she was a sprite. Jeanne Moreau is older that God and still a star. Here we tend to think any woman over 19 has one foot in the grave. But Sarandon has disproved that -- as has Julie Christie this year.
So many great Sarandon flicks: Thelma and Louise, The Hunger, Bull Durham, Dead Man Walking, and of course The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Damn it, Janet!) But my favorite moment is in Atlantic City when she looks up at Burt Lancaster and says "Teach me stuff."
Love Susan Sarandon
I love this lady. Always have. I like the way she's careful not to lump as as Gay men into a category. For example, she refers to us as people that "happen to be gay"...in other words that's not the only thing that defines us....and she says...."if there is a Gay community"...in other words she gets that we don't all live on one street! Ha ha. We're everywhere in all walks of life, all prefessions..woven into the very fabric of society. Gay men are not a "novelty" an amusing toy whose purpose is to be campy and amusing and tell you how fabulous you look. I was very young when AIDS broke out but I appreciate how she likened the experience to the bonding New Yorkers felt after 9/11. Perfect analogy! Susan sees us for the insightful complex real people that we are and she leaves the stereotypes behind. I'll take acceptance wherever I find it but her kind of acceptance is the best of all.
Very focused interview. Sarandon rocks my world
Cool Lady
Susan Sarandon has consistently been one of our greatest straight allies. I am always awed by her strength and courage to speak out against injustices that she sees in the world.
I'll never forget the Academy Awards that she and Tim Robbins spoke out against HIV+ detainees at Camp Bulkeley. It pissed a lot of blow hard conservatives off!
Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.
