GLAAD Announces Media Award Winners Including AfterElton .com

Last night at a star-studded gala at the New York Marriot Marquis, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (or GLAAD) announced the winners in more than half the categories of the annual GLAAD Media Awards, created to “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives.” AfterElton.com was one of the winners.

AfterElton.com and writer James Hillis were honored for the article, “Gay Newsmen — A Clearer Picture,” an in depth look at the issues confronted by gay journalists, which won in the category of Outstanding Digital Journalism Article.

“We’re thrilled by this award, and very, very proud of James,” said AfterElton.com editor Michael Jensen. “He wrote a terrific article.”

Celebrity attendees or presenters at the ceremony included As the World Turns stars Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann, journalist Barbara Walters, actors Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, director Maurice Jamal, as well as Cheyenne Jackson, Alan Cumming, and Graham Norton.

Other award winners included the movie Stardust, which won Outstanding Film — Wide Release. The film includes a gay pirate played by Robert DeNiro.

Despite an ongoing controversy over the lack of kissing between its teenage gay male characters, the CBS soap opera As the World Turns was honored for Outstanding Daily Drama.

Brian Graden, president of MTV (which owns AfterElton.com), was honored with the Vito Russo Award, named after one of GLAAD's late founders, the author of the landmark book The Celluloid Closet.

Rufus Wainright won in Outstanding Music Artist category for the CD Release the Stars, and Terry Moore’s graphic novel Strangers in Paradise won in the Outstanding Comic Book category.

The ABC newsmagazine 20/20 and the CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes both won in the category of Outstanding Newsmagazine Journalism in a tie vote. The winning 20/20 segment was a much-discussed one on transgendered children entitled “My Secret Self: A Story of Transgender Children.” Barbara Walters appeared in person to accept the award.

For the Bible Tells Me So won in the category of Outstanding Documentary. Out Episcopal bishop V. Gene Robinson, who is profiled in the film, was on hand to accept the award, along with director Daniel Karslake.

The GLAAD Media Awards are given in a total of 40 categories, 26 of which
were announced last night. The winners of the fourteen remaining categories will be announced at upcoming ceremonies in South Florida, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. This is the 19th year that GLAAD has given the awards.

Yesterday, GLAAD also announced an agreement with the cable network Bravo to broadcast the ceremonies later this year.

GLAAD was founded in 1985 by a group of New York activists to combat what its members saw as biased and inflammatory AIDS reporting in the New York Post. It is now based in Los Angeles with an office in New York, and a staff of more than 50.

Two Questions......

I'm a lame gay man because I forgot the show was even on last night so I'm wondering....

What award did Van and Jake present?

Did they accept for ATWT?

GLAAD is so sad

Thousands of GLBT people are upset not by a lack of kissing on As The World Turns but by the unfair, inaccurate, and non-inclusive representations of a gay couple. ATWT unfairly excludes the intimacy and romance that other couples on the show wallow in. ATWT inaccurately confines the couple to 'gay' story lines, like gay-bashing, while excluding the romance that other characters enjoy.* The gay couple are ignored in other stories except to allow other characters to portray the pain and self-satisfaction of having a gay relative, (the pain of having a gay older brother who gets bashed and the self-satisfaction of being tolerant enough to accept your gay nephew.) But these stories are never developed to any depth or realization but to make awkward references.

We all love to have LGBT characters we can support and celebrate. That's not only fun but reaffirming. But after the outrage by the community, GLAAD chooses ATWT actors to make the presentation on GLAADs achievements?** I guess if GLAAD gave me an award for showing gay people as second class citizens then I would be proud to explain to people exactly what it is that GLAAD does. And fellow presenter Randy "Are you a girl?" Jackson What has he done? Has he created a PSA for GLAAD, so now they owe him?

The only thing I can see that GLAAD does well, is promote itself. Their ad campaign directs you to glaad.org to find out how to "Be an ally, be a friend". Once you get there you find out how to buy tickets to awards events, how to donate at an Absolute Vodka Cocktail Hour (if you're a "young professional," that is) or you can donate directly to GLAAD, ($1,500 buys you a vote in the awards.) How does any of that promote being an ally or a friend to anyone but GLAAD. TLGB people are being murdered every day, don't we have better uses for our time and money?

GLAAD is a fundraising behemoth created to court the approval of media corporations, not the other way around. GLAAD makes their pronouncements but do they really mean anything. This may as well be an award from the American Family Association. I'd have to question myself if GLAAD offered me an award; I wouldn't be honored. And why does AfterElton continue with the clock? It seems like the lip-lock clock is a diversion from the real issue of a fair portrayal of a gay couple, one kiss isn't going to do anything but reset the clock.

* that would be fine if they introduced the couple for the purpose of a 'gay issue' subplot and let them bow out gracefully.

**Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann presented the portion of the GLAAD award's program where GLAAD tries to explain all the fine work that they do.

ummm....

"the CBS soap opera As the World Turns was honored for Outstanding Daily Drama."

^ that makes it sound like the show won in general for being a good show and not anything to do with van or jake's characters.....um, emmy awards anyone?

Barbara Walters Says GLAAD Award "Means More" Than Emmys

"You can forget all the Emmys. This means more to me."

I love you, Barbara.

Anyone think it strange that Anderson Cooper didn't show up to pick up his GLAAD for Outstanding TV Journalism - News Segment when it's in his backyard, New York?  He showed up to pick up his Emmys but not GLAAD.  If only he is more like Walters.

I like Barbara too, but Anderson's absence in understandable

Anderson Cooper was probably not at the awards as he was undegoing a procedure for skin cancer. It also appears that he initially did not want to talk about it. Hopefully it did not spread since this stuff can be lethal. Get well and folks let's get our butts to the dermatologist and all that good stuff. I am sounding like a chessy ATWT PSA.

James Hillis rocks! Read his article if you haven't yet

His article was a winner already, but recognition will be great for James and AfterElton, and myself as I love seeing these pieces. I know that they take time, but under the right hands, they can serve as calling cards about the quality to the found here. Just don't stop posting sexy pictures and all the things that my balanced diet needs. Congratulations!!!
