Speedomania! The Swimsuit Gay Men Love

And regardless of the direction swimwear is going for many competitive swimmers, divers and water polo players continue to wear the more traditional Speedo in the Olympics and elsewhere, God love ‘em.

Meanwhile, James Bond’s Daniel Craig may have single-handedly finally made the Speedo sexy for American women with his spectacular rise up out of the water in tight, Speedo-like trunks in 2006’s Casino Royale. And David Beckham also continues to do his part.

What the future holds for the Speedo, no one knows. But it’s a good bet that gay and bisexual men will be watching closely.

The LZR Racer does its part for Michael's parts

Not only does the LZR Racer desexualize Michael Phelps (not that I ever found him particularly sexy anyway), but it does so in an ultimate way: it turns him into a Ken doll. (Compare his junk with Ken's -- you know you have one lying around, or displayed, somewhere -- and you'll see what I mean.)

The male form

My love of the speedo I think stems not so much from the revealing of the junkage issue as it is the exposure of the male form. Who can't revel in looking at long, sinewy muscles, and seeing how they work in tandem? The body is like a machine and seeing its parts work together is a reminder of that. I like checking out hot guys as much as the next gay dude I suspect, and lord knows I could give a trainer a workout as I've gone to pot. But seeing guys with beautiful bodies can also prompt me into know "what lies beneath" my fleshy parts.

For me, it's the Speedo tan line.

Guys with all-over tans, meh. Guys with a Speedo tan-line, hubba. I don't know, it's crazy, but it drives me mad with passion!

Great article

Great and informative article. It's sad that American men feel that way about a product but it's homophobia at work again. I'm willing to bet that if Ultimate Fighting was suddenly popular with gay men, I can imagine the throngs of straight guys suddenly losing interest in it. Ah well.

interesting

And it wasn’t just heterosexual men making the association; straight women began to think of Speedos as gay too, sometimes complaining that they were “too much information.” Interestingly, this has never been a problem for the gay and bisexual suit enthusiast.

Well, some straight women are also less pleased by the baggy shorts many guys wear at the beach nowadays. I personally don't care if a cute guy wears trunks or briefs, but when it gets to the point where a guy looks like he's wearing capris, that's just not fair. Straight guys get to oggle at women wearing half a handkerchief and some string. Men ought to be objectified too.

Speedo

OMG what happened to Arnold.  Who can forget the iconic portrait of him by Robert Mapplethorpe.  He is definitely a gone to pot Republican.  There is some justice in the world afterall, even for body Nazis.

That ain't a Speedo

I know it's always nice to throw a picture of Daniel Craig in his skimpies into an article, but those aren't Speedo-like trunks he's wearing. Those are square-cut, and the classic Speedo style is most definitely and definitively not square-cut. (I will happily take my Daniel Craig served either way, mind you.)

Brazil = Sungas, not Speedos

Brazilian men where "sungas" not the skimpier Speedo. Sungas are much more forgiving . NYTimes Magazine just did an artical on them:

Brazilians

Actually, in the interest of scientific inquiry (i.e. to settle a bet), I once went rifling through a Brazilian co-worker's drawers while he was out buying lime for caipirinha's.  The experiment was intended to test beliefs that all Brazilian men own a thong.  Unfortunately, I did not discover any thongs.  But I did find a skimpy black Speedo.

ah, the wonderful speedo

speaking as someone who has worn the darned things in races in his younger years (7-15), they are just fine they do tend to ride up a bit! when i hit that wonderful age between 12-13, they came out with jammers, which were skin tight trucks, which i would recomend! practical AND comfortable. then they came out with the pants, which, if you have ever worn them, you wonder how the heck your supposed to put them on (think about the size of a 5-year old's pants and wearing them. We called them our superman pants (they were blue). and the wonderful thing about them (swim wise), i wouldnt cut myself trying to shave my legs to lose the drag from the hair (seriously pitty women who shave their legs...).
