Interview with Mikey Verdugo of "Design Star"
AE: How is your design work going right now?
AE: I thought Trish was such an excellent host; I noticed her hosting skills, from the very first moment.
Trish Beaudet
AE: I thought the two of you also had a great on-screen rapport. It would be really wonderful to see the two of you do a show together.
AE: The four of you in the Hurricane Katrina episode, I just thought that was the best TV that I’ve seen in a long time. I thought it was a great episode. I loved your looking at that horrible red wall and you just had this look on your face like, "Well, we could sandblast it."
AE: It looked really bad.
AE: Are you sorry you went on the show?
AE: Did you have any other friends you'll see again?
AE: Oh, fantastic.
AE: Yeah, I kind of got that impression. I couldn’t even get him to say like mean about Tracee. [Laughter]
AE: I've had a lot of requests to talk to you and ask you about what's been going on, from our readers at AfterElton. Anything you'd like to say to them?

Now Let Me See
Did you have just an inkling of a feeling that this wasn't the most straighforward
interview you've ever done (no pun intended)? It's like you don't see it but
you definitely read a pregnant pause before each semi-calculated answer.
Don't mind me - it's just the therapist that resides inside that read this article
with some misgiving.
I caught a but of that vibe, too...
...and the more I see of him in the media, the more I realize he'll do himself a huge favor by staying out of the limelight and working in the private sector.
I don't mean that as a slam to Mikey, neccessarily. Compare Matt's AfterElton interview's with Mikey's... Both are proven, talented designers and (I believe) honest with their responses. But it's obvious who comes off as a mature 'adult' and who appears to still be a 'child'.
I see a lot of Mikey's immature lack of responsibility in this interview. His responses make it seem that he doesn't understand why HGTV would not invite him to the finale. They also seem to imply that "HGTV did this to me".
Poor Mikey... He's still counting on other equally immature and unrealistic fans to support him and say, "It's OK, Mikey! You SHOULD have your own show on HGTV [of all places] even though we've seen you handcuffed to a cross and heard your moans as you were milked from behind by a pseudo bondage master! You're just too pretty NOT to!" I'd have more respect for Mikey if he were to just say, "Ooops! My bad..."
Mikey just now seems to be getting the impact of the internet (by his response in the interview). Believe me - I have absolutely nothing against 'slow learners'. At this point I do believe that Mikey "gets" it was a mistake to think that he could hide what he'd done publicly in the past (regardless of whether/not anyone thinks it's moral or immoral). But for goodness' sake - be a man and say, "Yup, I did it and I get why HGTV turned me down."
I think the most dissapointing thing about Mikey V. is that he's still talented but doesn't realize that every time he puts himself in in the public spotlight (like this interview), he demonstrates how immature and irresponsible he is.
I'm glad he's friends with Matt, but (at this point) Mikey has not demonstrated that he has the ability to truely see Matt's examples and learn from Matt. That's WAAAAAY too bad for him.
So... my thesis is that Mikey should stay in the private sector where he's less likely to be attacked publicly (and possibly hinder what could be a very decent career). Some people just have that extra gift for how to handle themselves in public. And some just don't. It's not a crime. It just a matter of planting the seed in the right soil. Some plants do better in the full sun, and some thrive in the shade.
Oh, and Mikey, honey... Make the choice to STOP calling yourself "Mikey".

PS:
After re-reading what I wrote, it is still unclear (in my mind) as to whether the 'porno' Mikey did was done privately (i.e. with a former lover) or done commercially.
I apologize ahead of time for assuming the latter, but in any case, still stand by my observations regarding accountability with HGTV.

I dont get what you guys read....
To me it seemed like an honest and straight forward interview. He obviously said he cant make any comments on the video due to the police investigation, so its not him being "immature" or avoiding the subject, its a legal thing.
Also why say he shouldn't do interviews like this? He has a right to his side of the story. Do you really think HGTV is being honest with all of this? HGTV currently has a winner of Design Star who lied on her application to win her own TV show, and had an unfair advantage being close with two people who were highly involved in the production of the show. Also they currently are airing Lee Snijder's old reruns, and his current job is involved in the hardcore porn industry. So Mikey (along with everyone else) has the right to wonder why he was the only one singled out.
If anything this interview has showed me a mature personality about him, because he is moving on with his life and focusing on the good things to come rather than the negative. He has no control which questions were asked of him, and he did a good job answering them all.
Some people just read too deep into things and are too critical. He made NO mistake, nothing about this is illegal and who is to say he ever tried to hide it? Please HGTV is not making comments for a reason, they are hiding more than he ever did I bet. So I don't trust their "he was not honest" comment, if that was true they would have actually said it rather than have the contestants say it for them.
Anyways great interview, and keep the updates coming, he deserves it.
