David Bromstad Makes Your Yuletide Gay (and a Whole Lot More!)
If you're looking for a fabulous sparkly gay holiday, you can't go wrong tuning in to HGTV, with its wall-to-wall holiday home decorating programming. And leading the parade is the network's best-known gay personality, David Bromstad, with an insider's tour of a Disney World Christmas.
Bromstad's no stranger to the happiest place on earth. "When I was a kid, what I wanted was to be a Disney animator," he said. "My dad took me to Disneyworld and I met with a lead animator there, and that's how I got started. I was a Disney freak. I was obsessed."
His obsession paid off, and he worked for Disney World for several years, until his victory on the first season of Design Star sent his life in a totally different direction. But getting back to his Magical Kingdom roots pretty much made his year. "I mean, I used to slave for them and now I come back and I'm treated like gold," he said.
The special, Behind the Magic: Disney Holidays, airs on November 29 at 8 PM Eastern/Pacific. It takes viewers on a Bromstad-guided, behind-the-scenes tour of the park, including a number of places where no cameras have ever been allowed.
"I take you into their Christmas warehouse – 54,000 square feet of Xmas crazy," he said. "You just feel like a little kid, with all the lights and trees and garland. And you'll get to see just how they transform Disney World for the season."
The total transformation takes place over a three day period, all done in the middle of the night by an army of hundreds of Disney workers. "It takes like three days for them to complete the whole Magic Kingdom," Bromstad said, then laughed. "Not as cool as Santa doing the whole world in one night, but pretty darn cool for not having any magical powers."
Bromstad got to be part of the Disney parade, and even pose with Mickey and Minnie in a cast photo. "I have so many great memories as a kid, watching Disney movies and just wanting to be part of the magic," he said. "And now I was."
It wasn't just childhood dreams that made Bromstad feel at home there, though. "Hello, it's the gayest place on earth," he said. "The trick is finding any straight guys working there at all. They're all just the happiest flamingest little juicy nuggets of caramel ever. It's hilarious. It was the best thing ever."
