Just Because Mel White of "The Amazing Race" is Paranoid Doesn’t Mean People Don’t Want to Kill Him
AE: Is there a sense among conservative religious circles
that they’re already lost the younger generation? Do they understand that it’s
going to change whether they like it or not?
AE: The dominoes are falling. Fundamentalism is on the wane, but the new fundamentalists, the new evangelicals haven’t really caught on either. Their big seminaries while they’re more progressive in everything else still won’t allow homosexuals to come and study, and so I think we’re making these great steps, but religion still has a really strong influence here and religion still hasn’t turned. The dominoes aren’t falling there.
AE: I thought Rick Warren did quite a little dance,
portraying himself as so tolerant and respectable and denied all of the things
that were even on video of him saying.
AE: We have a lot of younger readers. What would you say to
them as an older gay man? Also the senior thing, you know there’s nothing worse than being a senior and going into a bar just because you need to socialize, and being shunned because everybody thinks that you’re trying to hook up with them. I go to Sundance with my son every year, and they have this huge gay party, and my son was going to meet me there and I went over alone. And I’m a fairly interesting person and I would love to talk to people, but I couldn’t get anybody to talk to me. And that’s a funny feeling, you know? Don’t worry – we’re not just hitting on you. We need conversation, too. And then Michael came and then – bang! I had all the friends I could stand. Submitted by on Thu, 2009-04-16 19:52. |

Thank you AE for doing this interview
I didn`t really know Mel before the show. And after some research about him I have so much respect for him.He is just such an amazing person.
I`m a bit annoyed by CBS about luke`s identity, especially since he want to be out and proud on the show. But it`s not the first time that they did this.On survivor cook islands Brad Virata also came out on the show and CBS cut all the parts out since they wanted to label him as the "athletic asian".
I do wonder what Mel was suggesting about other contestants. So Victor is indeed gay?Hmm...
What a great man!
Great interview!! What a great story to tell! I wish we would've seen more of him on the show, but I guess it's more about the race.
Shame that CBS hasn't shown Luke and Lakisha as being out & proud too. I guess they wanted to tone the homosexuality down a bit, for middle America??
Oh, and agreed, he was totally talking about Victor!!
Jon Kasdan
The director's name that was going to be partnered with Mike White is Jon Kasdan, so you may want to edit that.
Great interview. Mel White is an amazing guy.
Thanks! I thought

Mel White is a treasure
Wonderful article!
Our thanks to Mel White for all he does every day.He gave our family hope and then taught us to speak out and work for justice. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think of Mel with grateful hearts. He is an American treasure and history will remember him.

We gotta embrace our elders
Very interesting interview. This man knows the ropes, and there is wisdom in his words. His last answer, when he tells that when he goes to a gay site and is shunned for being and elder guy, it really makes me angry. I have befriended nice old gay guys –not sex included- and they have a world of knowledge to offer than only comes with age and experience. Instead you see younger people than are so head hollow and only interested in the next pick up.
Mel White is my hero.
Years ago when I was in high school, a borderline-suicidal Christian girl struggling with my sexuality, I stumbled across Soulforce. When I read "What the Bible Says -- And Doesn't Saty -- About Homosexuality" it was exactly what I needed. There was a period of time when I would cry every day and pray to God and beg him to make me straight. Mel White's writings, and his resources, are a big part of why I was able to pull myself out of that.
Thank you, Mel. And thanks for this interview, AfterElton. <3
