M*A*S*H actor David Ogden Stiers finally comes out
The cast of M*A*S*H, Ogden Stiers During his stint on M*A*S*H and after, Ogden Stiers appeared in countless television and movie roles, generally as a supporting player. Most recently, he landed regular roles on the series The Dead Zone and Stargate: Atlantis. He’s also appeared in a number of Woody Allen movies, including one, Another Woman, where he played an eerily accurate-seeming younger version of his former acting mentor, the late John Houseman. But it was his post-M*A*S*H career as a voice actor where he once again found major success. Ironically, it was the flamboyant nature of some of those roles that he says contributed to his staying closeted. “Cogsworth, the character I did on Beauty and the Beast, could be a bit flamboyant on screen, because basically he is a cartoon,” he said. “But they didn’t want Cogsworth to become Disney’s gay character, because it got around a gay man was playing him.” Regarding this signature role in the classic Disney film (which Odgen Stiers also narrates), the actor reportedly ad-libbed the last part of Cogsworth’s famous advice to the Beast on what to give Belle: “Well, there's the usual things: flowers... chocolates... promises you don't intend to keep...” But on the subject of anti-gay discrimination in the animated movie industry, Odgen Stiers is quick to add, “I haven’t witnessed such things occurring in a long, long time.” Read the full interview at gossip-boy.com. One of my favorite actors!!!
And I'm glad to hear he's one of us.
I wish you even greater success, David. . .
David
Nice to see and hear also.
One of my favorite roles was when he played on Star Trek the Next Generation as Troi's mothers new husband. It was a especially moving episode dealing with age.
Hope to see him on TV again soon...
It seems pretty obvious in retrospect
but I never really thought about. Charles was always my favorite MASH character. Now I know why, I guess. :)
P.S. As a TV nerd, a mild correction: He only played Charles for six years, not eight. (From Season Six to Season Eleven. 1977-1983, like you said in the article.)
D'oh!
Check out my new fantasy website: TheTorchOnline.com. It's like AfterElton.com for fantasy geeks! And I Twitter
wow...
didn't see that coming. at all. from nobody in that show. (MASH) (btw was frasier's character based off him? they're so alike)
anyways, good for him. gives me one more reason to love MASH. wonder if he had come out during MASH and how his castmates reacted. i'm always intrigued about people coming out 'back in the day' when it was not....'normal'/when it was forbidden to come out.
Funny you mention Frasier.
hehe
frasier is my favorite show....kind of my obsession, apart from MASH :-P
that's so funny you mention that episode. i saw it just last week or something and i thought he looked familiar, but i wasn't able to put it together. *is slow*
Well, duh...
I have such fond memories of watching MASH as a family, I mentioned this to my mother last night. Her response was "Well, duh." I guess I was too naive at that point in my young life to notice. But mom didn't miss it.
He really ought to get better advisors. Disney has long been the gayest place on earth. And if they let Ellen voice a fish, surely a gay man can voice a clock.
You're quite right about Disney, Ed
As I point out in my book Open Secret all the top Disney animators were gay and out. That's the reason why same-sex partner benefits went industry-wide. The other studios wanted to challenge Disney and grab their animators, so they offered same-sex partner benefits. As a result a very reluctant Disney had to give in less risk losing its animators. All manner of corporations took note and followed suit. Next stop? Gay Marriage.
First Kelly McGillis, now David Ogden Stiers. QUEL SHOCK!
Who's next? Anderson Cooper?
It's also a desirable marketing demographic
I think Disney could probably shut out Gay Days at their parks, since they are private property. But the PR disaster and loss of business would be worse. So they're tap-dancing around the culture war- selling both Precious Moments figurines and Mickey rainbow pins: http://www.yourwdwstore.net/Disney-Mickey-Pin--Icon--Rainbow_p_2619.html
And where's the mention of Jumba? I just forwarded the news to the Jumba/Pleakly mailing list.
I always thought he was.....
Congratulations to him. It's never too late to come out and be who you are.
Why didn't I guess?
