News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Exclusive: Scott Evans' First Interview

AE: Do the writers talk to you at all about the characters, or is it "here's where it's going" and you just have to figure out how to play it?
SE:
It's pretty much, "Here's the script. If you want to talk, let's talk, and if you're good, you're good."

AE: It seems like there has been an explosion the past month or so on daytime television with gay male characters popping up all of a sudden on One Life to Live and The Young and Restless. And As the World Turns added another gay character. Are you aware of Luke and Noah over on ATWT and what a huge phenomenon that became?
SE:
I heard stuff about it and I know it's there and gets a lot of coverage. Which is exciting, but to say explosion...we're getting there. It's good. I'm glad people are accepting of it, and it's become such a big thing.

Yani Gellman and Michael Muhney will soon have an affair on The Young and the Restless

AE: Every year, we do something called the AfterElton Hot 100, where our readers vote on who they think are the hottest men in the world. I know thanks to your mom, Chris is aware that he's made the Top 10 twice. I suspect that with this role for you, you could very well make the list next year. So I want to know is there any sibling rivalry between you two? Is it incredibly important to you that you eventually rank higher than Chris on the list?
SE:
[laughing] No, no rivalry at all. That would be fantastic to be there together. There's no rivalry. The only rivalry we ever have is when we play sports or wrestle.

AE: You mentioned you’re a Boston fan. Are you a big sports guy?
SE:
Yeah. And even though Chris moved out to L.A., he hasn't become jaded. He still roots for the Celtics, for the Red Sox and the Patriots. So we're good there. If he became any other fan, I'd have to kill him.

AE: What sport do you like in particular?
SE:
My favorite season to watch is football, then I also love baseball season. The Red Sox destroyed the Yankees this week, which was phenomenal, but it's hard living in New York with that. I play football and dodgeball in New York. I like to keep active like that.

AE: My readers will kill me if I don't ask if you're single or taken. If you're single, at least they can imagine they have a chance of running into you and sweeping you off your feet.
SE:
[laughs] I am very single.

AE: That about covers everything I had.
SE:
Fantastic. My mother will be so excited that I talked to you.

One Life to Live airs Monday-Friday (2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., ET) on ABC.

Even though there doesn't

Even though there doesn't seem to be very many pictures of him on the net, I think I am in love... If only I was an actor on One Life to Live, I would so try to seduce him.

Great scoop Michael, keep it up! :D

Thanks!

Terrific interview!  I can't wait for this OLTL storyline to play out, and I have very high hopes for it.  OLTL is on a more gay friendly network compared to ATWT and its Executive Producer and Head Writer have been doing great things for OLTL.  Oliver Fish (whom I like to refer to as "Ollie") and Kyle Lewis's storyline has the potential of being the Ollian of the U.S. and already, there's a palpable chemistry between Scott Evans and Brett Claywell.

Nice shoutouts too to some of my other faves such as the always incredible Cheyenne Jackson and the extremely talented Jo Weil and Thore Schoelermann.

I look forward to many great things from Mr. Evans's portrayal of Ollie Fish!

Scott sounds like a nice guy. I hope his career continues to grow. His only flaw is that he is a Red Sox fan.

Priorities

The man is obviously very confused. Baseball should be number one sports wise, football second, basketball way down their at the end. And I will forgive his misguided faith in the Red Sox and the Patriots as the naivety of youth. He is young, hot, well spoken, employeed... In other words, he is almost perfect.

Congrats on the exclussive, Mr. Jensen.

This is perfect

I was just complaining to a friend about not having many shows to watch this summer.

Is there somewhere where you can read up more on the Fish/Kyle storyline? I'd like to know whats going on with their story before it starts airing. Will there be an AfterElton synopsis on Fish/Kyle's relationship this far? :]

P.S. Great Interview Micheal

jsg03jd's picture

Why yes!

Check out Anthony Langford's column last week on this very site:

http://www.afterelton.com/TV/gayslives/06-09-09

This should give you a heads up on Scott's/Oliver's and Brett's/Kyle's story because nothing has happened yet onscreen.  But the writeup and clip above is the background you'll need.

Awesome, tysm. Thats what i get for being late to his his column this week.

A Rather Charming Scott Evans Indeed...

Scott seems quite nice, and I would love for him to become 1/2 of the Evans Brothers(like Luke and Owen Wilson), and not just Chris Evans' brother. Unfortunately, at first I went, crap OLTL is on at the same time that ATWT is on and I don't miss my LOAH!! Fortunately for Scott, the boys have been MIA for quite some time. This means that I will definitely be checking out the show whenever LOAH is not on (which is about 5-6 days out of the week lately). I have very much been looking forward to Scott's scenes after a snippet of his character was introduced on GOOL here at AE. I think it will be a good storyline, especially considering how everyone keeps saying that the writing is better over there. Even if I can't catch it when LOAH is on, I will definitely keep up to date with GOOL and hopefully Youtube (if someone makes the channel dedicated to the couple or just his character).

Either way, if you're reading this Scott, and I'm sure his mom is, good luck with everything, and I'll be watching you on OLTL one way or another. Since having a gay actor play a gay role always gives the character a unique sense of believability to the character that makes them so endearing, it'll be interesting to see you pull it off. Also, I hope you become as big as Luke and Noah have on ATWT b/c it's getting lonely for them being the only major gay couple on daytime soaps. Give em' a run for their money!! I've always enjoyed a good bit of healthy competition. Again, good luck and congrats on your first interview. Be proud, you did a good job.

One Life

He sounded just about perfect until he took that little jab at my beloved Yankees at the end...isn't it enough that we lost?

Sigh.

Anyway, this was a great interview (congratulations, Michael, on the get). I'm super-excited by news of this storyline and I can't wait to see what happens. One Life has had it's low points in the last year, but the writing is hitting on all cylinders right now...if that can carry over into this storyline, it could be epic.

My only hope is that whatever gay panic Fish goes through, I hope it's with Layla or Blair or Tea or Gigi or Rachel...anyone but Stacy.

YouTube Channel for Fish and Kyle

Someone already has a YouTube channel for the couple. Here's the first video where they've edited together their scenes:

If you search for "Oliver Fish," someone else includes a bunch (though I don't think all) of Fish's scenes, with and without Kyle.  It gives a much better look at the character, since he's only had a few, focused scenes with Kyle so far.
jsg03jd's picture

Thanks for the heads up!  I

Thanks for the heads up!  I ff'ed these scenes before (not a huge Michael Easton/Kamar de los Reyes fan) and never realized how different the Oliver Fish character is when he's around anyone other than Kyle Lewis.

Ollie Fish seems to be a lovable bumbling idiot except when he's alone with Kyle.  Very interesting...

Wonderful, wonderful interview

Congrats on the exclusive, and thank you for asking some wonderful questions!

I have to admit, I could fall head-over-heels for Scott Evans: from what I've seen on OLTL, he's a terrific actor with marvelous comic ability, he's sexy as all get-out (that voice of his makes me melt), AND he's a genuine, down-to-earth guy. His mom must be SO proud. And I'm proud that he's an out actor with a successful career--I really think he could not only join his brother on next year's Hot 100 list, but he could become a movie star himself.

I so can't wait to see the Fish/Kyle story develop. Should be some good stuff!

Scott Evans

I've been lucky enough to enjoy working out at the same gym as Chris here in Studio City.  And once I saw him with another guy, who thinking back on it now, MAY have been Scott.  Needless to say, my eyeballs got more of a workout than any other part of my body that day.

Scott seems like such a cool guy, down to earth and humble.  Kudos to his parents for raising her kids well, and supporting him (all of them) in his life.  And he loves baseball too?  The Red Sox no less???  [faint!]  Michael, can we please organize an AE baseball game getaway weekend to Boston, with Scott as our special guest of honor?  Pleeeeaaase....    :P

And Michael, fantastic interview!  I've been wanting to read one from Scott for a while.  But how could you NOT suggest the new slashfic that will undoubtedly start popping up about Scott/Chris.  Haha.  Now for the serious question:  Who is the hotter brother combo -- Scott/Chris or Sam/Dean?  [head explodes]

Kish

By the way, did I just miss it, or is this the first time that anyone officially associated with the show has acknowledged that Kish is going to happen?  I mean, those "name-altered" casting script spoilers were pretty obvious, but it's still nice to have an official confirmation.  Does this interview qualify as that?

Yeeessss!!!

I SO called it a few days ago about this interview with Scott, lol.

It is very nice that we get to know a little bit more about him.I always thought that he was the older one and turns out he`s the younger brother. And I`ll SO pay to see him & his brother wrestle, drool. ;)

Thanks Michael for a great interview! I loved the questions, and of course the replies. Scott seems like a very sweet and well spoken guy. I noticed the chemistry between Kyle and Fish the first time I watched, and I can't wait for this storyline to finally begin!

Thank you, AfterElton, for your continued Scott Evans coverage. But when will this adorable fella grace the world with a photo shoot?

I have never followed a daytime soap in my life, and I'm now Tivo-ing One Life To Live every day and watching it as soon as I get home. Frustratingly, Fish hasn't been in an episode for about a week, but I live in hope!

Fish/Kyle will be on this week

My understanding is that they should appear on Thursday and Friday's episodes.

Wrestling

Michael Jensen is SO much more the journalist-of-integrity than I. When that wrestling comment came out of Scott's mouth, my only hesitation would've been in deciding if the follow-up was, "Are there any photos?" or "Wrestle nude much?"

Really?

My first thought was that he didn't go there. He was script interviewing was my thought. He should have known that his fans would want him to lament on that a little bit and handled it with some integrity, but he still should have commented on it. Something like, "Do you and your brother wrestle much?" would have worked. However, as soon as he said him and his brother are very competitive when they wrestle he gave me a thought I will never get out of my head. I love his brother. I love his work on OLTL. I love his character and I love the Kyle character (a bad boy with a good heart). This storyline walked right out of my wet dreams and onto the screen.
Dave Doty's picture

My Thought Was...

...that he didn't go there because he is, you know, a professional.  It's one thing for us to entertain those thoughts (I'm sure we all went there immediately on reading that comment, even before people discussed it in the threads), but it's quite another to hint around at incest fantasies regarding the person you're talking to and his brother.

This way, we got to have our little momentary fantasies AND he didn't creep out and alienate the interview subject.  Sort of a win-win.

It is not professional to

It is not professional to not write (interview) for your audience. Also, you need to be careful to not alienate the person you are interviewing, but that is why I said it should have been tasteful and along the lines of "Do you and your brother wrestle a lot?" Asking that question recognizes what your audience wants to know without going anywhere near an incest fantasy. It had much less do to with him being "professional" and much more to do with him interviewing from a script. Actually, the whole interview reeks of scripting and over editorializing. The majority of the questions read more like statements of fact than actual questions.

Michael Jensen's picture

You're mistaken if you think I believe my audience really

consists of people who would want me to go "there" in any way, shape or form. To do so would not only be inappropriate and an insult to the interviewee, but would certainly turn off other potential interview subjects and cause publicists to tell to them stay away from our site as we might very well ask embarrassing questions. If that really is the kind of interview you're looking for, might I suggest a gossip site?

Great Interview

My favorite part of the interview...

AE: When we talked to Thom Bierdz recently about his role on The Young and the Restless, it was pretty clear that it was important to him as a gay man to tell a gay story. Is that important to you in any aspect at all? Where would you like to see your storyline go?
SE
: I agree. I think the story is what's important. So far it's fantastic. It just needs to be told with integrity. Instead of a gay storyline, it's a storyline. A love storyline. It's the story of these two characters and where they're going. Hopefully people who aren't as open-minded can see past that and just look at it as two characters taking this journey.

We need to break down this whole thing about what type of story is being told and tell one about the life of a character who happens to be gay.

When we do that. Which. lets

When we do that. Which. lets be honest, is EXACTLY what they did with NUKE on ATWT, the community starts to bitch that 1) its not gay enough and 2) they aren't in bed together enough. I like the NUKE aproach because it hasn't focused on the sexuality of either character and has focused much more around them being a soap couple and facing the obstacles that the other soap couples have faced.

Great guy, great interview!

Really, Scott seems like such a nice, down-to-earth kinda guy.  I've loved him on OLTL since his debut as Fish, and can't wait for this storyline.  I'm hoping it'll be great!  And with the actors, writers, and show that're involved, I'm fairly certain it will be!

Great interview Michael - and good job getting one so quickly!

Oliver Fish

OK first I want to say that Scott Evans is such a hot guy and I loved the interview! I can't wait to hear more of him and I already know who is at the top of my list for next years AE Hot 100!

Also I was watching all the Oliver Fish clips I could find online and am already excited for more! And the last clip I watched involved Fish moving in with his new roommates. I just thought it was funny that one of his new roommates is named Christian!  Olivers  and Christians must make good roommates! although I dont think this Olli will end up with this Christian. I am interested to see how this whole Fish/Kyle thing unravels.

Some criticism

Some criticism to the interviewer...

Very good interview, but, was it really necessary to stretch the "are you afraid that playing gay will hurt you?" part over one entire page? Specially when he said it was a non-issue from the first question.

In this time and age, when playing gay shouldn´t be such a big con, AE surely looks like they are trying it to be.

On the other hand: Not making a follow-up question on the wrestling thing? I don´t know if I´ll ever be able to forgive you. :-)

hey! what about the mom?

a lot has been said about these two very hot and handsome siblings but none has mentoned how cool and loving their MOTHER is. i think i would like to give a nice big shout out to Mrs. Evans for being so supportive and for being not just a caring mother but a gay ally as well (the fact that she has been reading afterelton)... LOVE HER!!!!! cheers for Mrs. Evans!!!

Scott Rocks

I'm one of those that knew it back in February.  I fell in love with Oliver Fish when he showed up with those flowers and got rejected.  I am now beyond thrilled that ABC is explaning Scott and Brett's roles to tell this story.  They should do an awesome job.  Most couples on OLTL have lots of playful banter and lusty moments.  Hopefully Kyver will too.  I just hope they don't make them into an overly serious, morosely somber, affectionatelly challenged couple, like those on TeleNext soaps.  We don't need any more of those.

At any rate, great interview!!

I think I prefer KYVER over

I think I prefer KYVER over KISH as a portmanteau for the Fish and Lewis characters!  Thanks!

KISH a little close to

KISH is a little too close to QUICHE or, worse, KITSCH, for my taste...  :-)

Also, based on the few scenes Kyle and Oliver have had thus far, Fish seems to have some visceral reaction to Kyle calling him "Oliver."  Maybe that's how Kyle addressed his honey bun, who's now a fumbling idiot when it comes to women, back in college...

Wheeler's picture

KISH/QUICHE

I hadn't thought of the 'quiche' thing, but that makes it perfect - real men eat KISH!
Dave Doty's picture

Portmanteaus

I'm partial to Kish, myself.  But as I pointed out on another list, it's not like the hive mind has to sit down and argue out an "official" name for the pairing.  Everyone can use whatever they want, and we'll all know what we're talking about, and over time we'll probably see a winner emerge naturally.  Nuke won out over Loah, and Ollian over Chrolli.

It just can't be "Oyle."  I forbid it.  <shudder>

galefan2004's picture

KYVER?

Where does KYVER come from? Seriously, no one on that show calls Oliver Fish Oliver. I didn't even know his name was Oliver Fish when I first saw him on the show (I haven't watched forever though). As long as they call him Fish anything with Oliver is off the table.

galefan2004's picture

Do not get your hopes up.

Do not get your hopes up. Hell, for that matter don't even get your hopes up that this isn't basically spelling the end of Fish and Kyle. My worry is about the fact that ABC, especially ABC daytime, HATES gay characters. I base this on the fact that when GH introduced the first ever gay character they wrote him off the show within a month because of pressure from the network. When they wrote a gay storyline for GH:Night Shift it was completely different, but GH:Night Shift is on SOAP Net and is seasonal and late night. The history of gay characters on ABC daytime (even on AMC with the lesbian characters) is to give them a storyline for a month then write them off the show after they get the nod from the gay community.
