Michael Muhney of "The Young and the Restless" on Playing Heteroflexible, Machiavellian and More!

AE: What's the most surprising feedback or comment you've had at this point?
MM:
Well, first of all, the support has been so welcomed, of course, but what's interesting is how many viewers out there are really emotionally invested, and intelligent and articulate enough to express why they like what I'm doing, and what it is that's refreshing about this particular character.

At the same time, I embrace — and I have to if I'm going to consider myself well-rounded — I have to embrace the negative stuff that certain people are saying. However, I've found that a lot of the negative things I've read so far, basically, I can sum up in two main categories. Apparently, a lot of people are complaining that I'm too tall compared to the last actor, and others have not moved on with their emotional embracing of the previous actor.

There's an acceptance period for people to get used to me as this character, but the reaction as a whole, outside from being too tall and being Michael Muhney, has been really interesting and I've appreciated it. And I've also appreciated that what we have is a character that Maria created, but has become one more stimulus from debate on open forums about people and sexuality and sexual preference, and not everyone is always what you think they are, and don’t try and judge a book by its cover or package people neatly into a certain box because that's not what life is.

In a way, I think that's when her writing and storytelling becomes more relevant today. It's not 1985. It's not even, like you said, five years ago.

AE: How did you come to end up on The Young and the Restless?
MM: I guess good fortune? [laughs] It was sort a strange circumstance where I got a phone call about meeting Paul and Maria for the part, and was described what it was about, and given a briefing on the show itself and the character. It all sounded intriguing enough, and I'm glad I went over to CBS that particular day and met with them, because I keep feeling as each day goes on that it was a smarter and smarter choice than even I'd imagined it would be.

AE: I have to tell you, I was a huge Veronica Mars fan, and Sheriff Don Lamb was such a fun character. You played him with such smarminess, it was just a lot of fun to watch.
MM:
Thank you. I appreciate that. I put a lot of heart into making as many moments as I could in that character. It means a lot to me.

AE: I can tell you already had quite a few gays fans from your Don Lamb days, and with Adam, you're only going to become more popular with gay viewers.
MM:
I shot a pilot in Chicago last year from one of the creators of Lost. My father and mother were Beau Bridges and Ann Archer, and my brother on the show was Cheyenne Jackson.

AE: You're kidding! You were in that!
MM:
Yeah, he and I played brothers. The guy is stunning in person. You want to talk about tall, he's taller than me. But here we are meeting in Chicago, I'm flying in from LA, and he's flying in from New York, we're filming in Chicago and we're getting to know each other and bonding with your cast, you're brother and sister and parents on the show.

And he says to me, "Do you know how many of my gay friends back in New York are jealous that I'm filming with Don Lamb right now?" He got such a kick out of it and said he was bragging back home. It's through relationships with him and other friends of mine that I've learned just how diverse the audience is that follows interesting storylines.

AE: Going back to your character of Adam, what would your response be to those soap viewers who would be upset that the show is going there with a character like Adam, who say I don't want to see this, I don't want to be exposed to a gay character like Rafe, or someone who would want to sleep with him?
MM:
I like to be a glass half-full kind of guy, so even if there are viewers who don't want to "go there" with that character, I think maybe what's good about that is that you're stirring up emotions in those people. They're invested in a storyline, in a show, in a character or a set of characters, and they're finding that they're having to tackle difficult issues vis-à-vis Adam. They're having to vicariously walk through that hallway. What's behind that door at the end there? What are they going to discover about themselves, or what are they going to think, or will they're opinions at the end of the journey be formed differently than had they not been exposed to something like this.

I think even people who are reticent to see this, or even the outward supporters, they're both really good for making the show more relevant and more emotionally connecting for an audience. I think ultimately, it's a good thing, and why I praise Maria for not just doing it, but doing it in a way that is both good storytelling, but is also done, I feel, the right way. She's done a good job of it. There's always going to be some people who won't like it. If you buy a green car, they think you should have bought a black one. But I think at the end of the day, this embraces a larger audience rather than alienates a smaller group of people.

Great Interview

I already adore the story line and all the potential there,  but this interview has made me a fan of Michael Muhney as well. I wasn't a Veronica Mars viewer so this is my first exposure to him but he definitely comes across as intelligent, open-minded and fun.

Thanks

Thanks for the interesting interview.  MM certainly handled himself with gentility with various controversial subjects.

I would have loved to hear more about his time as Sheriff Lamb, although I realize he was most interested in promoting his current project.  But he'll always be Sheriff Lamb to me.

If he didn't have any prior knowledge of or interest in soaps, I wonder how they came up with his name?  It's not often you see people crossing from prime time to daytime.

And he left "too old" off the list of complaints he can't do anything about. :)

Thank you very much!

This was a very insightful conversation with Michael Muhney.  He's primarily the reason I tuned in to YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS to see what he would bring to the table in terms of taking Adam Wilson's character to places his predecessor was unwilling to go.

Mr. Muhney strikes me as a very intelligent, thinking man's actor, and this shows in his performances.  The open mindedness, cogent and eloquent responses in this interview have definitely made me a fan.  I look forward to Adam's craziness, darkness, humor and pathos courtesy of Mr. Muhney.

Recasts can be hard on soaps as Mr. Muhney has astutely observed.  He has even braved the soap message boards, which have posters who have been downright brutal and unnecessarily harsh in their criticism of Mr. Muhney largely due to their allegiance to the prior actor.  This is one recast, however, that definitely works and Maria Arena Bell and company should be proud.

PLUS he's played opposite Cheyenne Jackson, my favorite Broadway leading man!  That's just icing on the cake for this new Michael Muhney fanboy!

I think the plot is smart

I am surprised to write this. But, as I watched the clips I was struck by how smart the plotting is. I have not seen any storyline involving a gay character quite like it. Machivellian definitely comes to mind. But, in a way, in which the gay guy, so far, is just as smart. I like the complication.

Michael Muhney is such the awesomest actor! :) He's so cool and down to earth in this interview, and he's so nice on Twitter too. I'm so happy to be able to watch him on the small screen more often.  I do miss Don Lamb of Veronica Mars.

Gotta remind myself to vote for him for next year's AfterElton.Com's Top Hot 100 list.

Michael Muhney-great interview!

I am very impressed with the depth of this interview, from the questions asked to the answers.

Michael--I have been a fan of your acting skills from the Veronica Mars days, and knew you could play selfish and as the interview said "smarmy."  I only tuned into this storyline because you were the one cast in the role.

After reading your answers I am now impressed with your brain as well.  Your actors instincts are well established, but I think it was your thought processes and careful consideration of the character that added the complexity.  In just a few minutes you went through a whole host of emotions; self recrimination, doubt, justification, fear, panic, hopeful, confident, sexy, shock, confusion, doubt and then back to justification.   I don't think I have ever learned so much about a charater in such a short time.  Bravo!

I appreciate that both you and the interviewer haven't marginalized the impact a story like this, or a character like Adam, could have, just because it is being told on daytime.

I also apreciate that the character of Adam considers himself heterosexual, but considering your chemistry with the actor that plays Rafe, I hope Adam realizes that he has a little more flexibility than he once believed.

THE NEW ADAM = HOTTIE!

I was not a Veronica Mars fan. I was very skeptical of this new Adam played by Michael Muhney. You know how it goes...a new actor comes in and takes over a role by the actor who has been playing the character for quite sometime and now has to get adjusted to the new actor playing that role...hopefully I explained it well.

I did not think I was going to like someone else playing Adam besides Chris Engen but Michael has changed my mind....love him. If Chris had stayed on, I think he would have gotten more sexier (even though he is already sexy) with his character but now that Michael has stepped up to the plate = wowwie and the same goes for Yani Gellman aka Rafe, hoooot! Whew! Someone turn on the AC. I know that their intimate scenes are not going to last but maybe, Y&R need to re-consider because they are the new hot couple of the soaps. I don't know if I am going to like Phillip and Rafe together but we shall see....Rafe, keep Adam on lockdown and keep steaming up my TV set (wish there were more detailed scenes shown. If the straight couples can do it, so can the gay couple..look at Luke & Noah somewhat...) Excuse me while I turn on the fan..thanks ;)

One missing question

I guess the one question that didn't get asked was probably one Maria Bell wouldn't have allowed, but was brought up in the questions for yesterday's liveblog: How long of a gig is this for MM?  I just can't see Adam staying on the show once Victor figures out what he's done to Ashley.  Maybe a few months in jail, but crossing Victor Newman has consequences, and there's a miscarriage of his child involved.  How can he stay connected to the plot?
Anthony D. Langford's picture

Soaps....

Soaps are a genre where you can rape, murder and pilliage, go through a period of redemption (or not) and remain a viable front burner character.  Victor himself has done horrible things such as imprisioning a man and keeping him chained in a dungeon.  IIRC, he inadvertantly caused Nikki to have a miscarrage when she was pregnant with Jack's baby.  One of my favorites is when Victor paid a servant to feed Jack's drugs to make him impotent so he could have sex wtih Nikki when they were married.  If MM's version of Adam proves popular the show will twist and turn the storyline to keep him around, I'm certain.

And yes, the actor is hot.

In terms of Adam's redemption ...

Though Adam was the direct cause of Ashley's miscarriage, it's Ashley herself who knows he didn't really mean for that to happen.   Recall - even in her befuddled mental state, the one thing Ashley did remember was that Adam tried to reach out his hand to prevent her from falling.  Sure - Adam's guilty, but I could easily see him being redeemed, when iin a year or two, Victor and Ashley's teenage daughter. Abby. comes down with some rare, medical malady, and Adam is the only Newman who can save her life (i.e. bone marrow transplant, etc.).  In fact, they may have already telegraphed something like this, since Abby is one character who's always gotten the creep-vibe from her half-brother and hasn't had time to fit him into her busy schedule. .. lol!  That way, while Adam may have caused Ashley to lose one baby, he'd end up being the savior of the child she and Victor already have.  It sometimes goes like that.

I hope they find a way to keep Adam around, because I'm really lovin' Muhney in the role.

Damn, is Michael Muhney hot

Damn, is Michael Muhney hot or what! I'm really enjoying the way he's played Adam so far. He's an intriguing character for sure and Michael plays him so well.

Awesome interview, btw. He seems like a smart, great guy.

I've only seen a few of the Y & R episodes with Chris Engen, but I too am struck by the differences in the two actors. Besides the height and age differences. Engen projected more of a boy next door quality while Muhney comes across as much more devious. Nonetheless, the chemistry between Yani and Michael is exceptional and the writing is excellent. As for Muhney's future with the show, the character of Jack Abbott has been butting heads with Victor for 30 years and is still around.

Hang in there Michael and...KISS HIM ALREADY!

Acting, future, and a question

Great interview first of all! It was nice to hear substance to an interview although I think we need an interview with the show's creator about Chris Engen's departure.

I think Michael though is a way better actor than Engen. The scene where he was making up his speech to Rafe would have seem totally foolish with Engen. Michael made it fun and although many of us laughed it was more of a mustache twirling laugh than goofy. The height is an issue but that is what makes the match up even more fun and awkward in a good way. The physical chemistry is great though. The thumb on Rafe's mouth told you that this was going to be a seduction and not just a booty call. Sure, we could have seen the make out session but lets save it for a more shocking time, like Victor coming in. Y&R's smart writing and pacing is making me want to tape and check this show out more!

I was thinking about Adam's place in the show and where this would all take him. I think they could do a whole Adam in prison storyline where an asexual or even bisexual Adam uses his skills to get what he wants with Heather and Victor still trying to get him to be good but using his wiles to get out early. This could lead to criticism of using the bisexual label as something evil but this is the character was haven't seen on soaps which belongs there! Stereotype aside, the evil characters are the ones we find the most interesting. Who knows, maybe Adam comes back and messes up some of the Thom/Rafe storyline later. Oh the possibilities! There is always room for the bad guy.

Can someone summarize why Adam is in trouble for those of us coming in during the middle of this plot?

How singularly innocent I look this morning.

I wanna see a big ol' hot threesome with Adam, Heather, and Rafe

Adam framed Victor for murder so Heather (uh-huh that Heather) put him in jail.

Check out wikipedia for great cast bios and storyline information.  Whoever updates them is pretty good!

Ok but...

Shouldn't that be an Adam, Rafe, and Thom threesome with maybe Cane thrown in for good measure AND THEN Nikky walks in?

Adam's Troubles...

Adam's troubles involve his father, Victor.  When Victor returned from being presumed dead he reclaimed the keys to his kingdom and ousted Adam (who he left pretty much everything to because he was on the outs with his eldest two children) from his life and company.  Adam had let the power and money go to his head and made questionable decisions with the company.  Victor had Adam black balled in the business world and thus he couldn't find a job to reclaim the life he had before Victor came into his life.  Victor's longtime nemesis, Jack, preyed on Adam's anger and the two worked to finde out what Victor had been up to while he was away.  Their investigation ultimately led them to come up with a scheme to forge Victor's diary where Victor admitts to killiing the man who was responsible for the death of this wife and unborn child (the reason Victor left town in the first place).  Adam sold the book to a publisher and turned the diary over to the police.  Victor was arrested and held in prison.  Ultimately the diary was found to be a fake and Adam was left holding the bag as Jack made sure Adam did most of the heavy lifting to get the diary published.  Adam was sent to prison and Victor told him he best man up and learn the lesson that actions have consequences blah blah blah.  Adam wasn't cut out for prison so he concocted a plan to get out of jail.  He faked inheriting his mother's disease that caused her blindness by injecting botox into his eyes (turns out he's done permanent damage to his eyes and is now really going blind).  He played on the sympathies of his former girlfirend, assistant DA Heather (she arrested him & prosecuted him when she found out he forged the diary and lied to her about it) and Victor to get him released from prison.  They put him on house arrest w/his father as the one responsible for him.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Muhney comes across as a

Muhney comes across as a very intelligent actor, putting a lot of time & thought into his character.  He's definitely not just someone chosen for his looks, like a lot of actors/actresses are.

I too only turned in for this storyline, although I've missed some parts.  From my perspective, in the after sex scene, Adam does NOT question his sexuality.  It looks like he didn't like having to take it that far, so he made a booty call to a woman to wash out the gay.

My only criticism of the interview:  it's sexual orientation, not preference.

Great interview

Everyone got to my comments before I did.

Just wanted to say amazing interview, Muhney seems really devoted to the role, hope to see Adam in a good story thorughout the year.. I think the interviews AfterElton those are one of my favorite features of this site. Its nice to get the actor's perspective and it helps that they are far more substanative then most actor interviews. Can't wait for the next one :].

Loved the interview

I really do like him as a person.  He's so engaging and very intelligent.  He should be since he's a member of Mensa according to the wikipedia article on him.  I appreciate that he is taking a hard look at his character's motivations and really putting his all into the role.  That being said, sorry, he's not sold me completely as Adam.  I am remaining open to his interpretation.  He's done well thus far.  I was a huge fan of Chris' Adam so it will take a lot to accept anyone else besides him in the role for me.  I wish him all the best as the storyline is quite intriguing.

Adam

just watched the most recent clip on YouTube, and I love this storyline, and where the actors are taking the characters. Even wrote a facebook note about it:

This is officially my new favourite gay storyline. To catch you up to speed, Rafe is Adam's lawyer, but is suspicious of him. Adam realizes this, and so unleashes Plan Gay, wherein he seduces Rafe to distract him from finding incriminating evidence. Question is, is Rafe that dumb, or is he playing Adam right back?

Why I love this: This isn't your cliched coming out gay storyline. Adam probably isn't gay (though I hope he is just a little bit), but he is still willing to go there. It's the first time we've seen a straight man seduce a gay man. This storyline is full of manipulation and lies, which may seem bad, but it's great to see a gay story being treated the same way as a straight one.

Am I surprised Y&R, a soap opera for Christ's sake was this revolutionary? Hell yeah. Am I happy they went there. Hell yeah!

And on a purely shallow note, the guys are pretty attractive, so what's not to love?

Michael is great! I haven't watched Y&R in forever, but he was great on Veronica Mars and I'm glad to see him doing something to get him in the limelight again. Plus, as everyone has said, he seems like a charming, smart man. Thanks for the great interview :)
