1. Neil Patrick Harris
Rank last year:
5

Here in the AfterElton.com newsroom, we’re not sure if our
#1 Hottest Guy is steaming up our glasses or if we’ve got tears in our eyes.
Not that we haven’t loved our top guy in the past, but this is the first year
since we started the Hot 100 that an out gay man tops the list.
Last year, when we told Neil Patrick Harris he came in 5th, he
jokingly said he was “hoping the four men above me age rapidly in the next
twelve months.” We don’t think Neil moved up because anyone gained a single
wrinkle or added a gray hair. Instead, Neil seemingly managed to be multiple
places at once and turned the heat way
up. Did you see his bod in “The Naked Man” episode of How I Met Your Mother earlier this year?
Neil’s a very busy guy and in his already lengthy career
he’s played every kind of role, from iconic child doctor Doogie Howser to
jingoistic Colonel Jenkins in Starship
Troopers to
womanizer Barney Stinson on the hit sitcom HIMYM.
He even took advantage of the down time during the writers’ strike to play
a hapless singing super villain in Joss Whedon’s iconic web series, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. On top
of that, he somehow found time to host the TV Land Awards, as well as the 2008
World Magic Awards, indulging his passion for that particular pastime.
Speaking of passions, Neil’s been with cutie actor David
Burtka since 2004. Gay guys everywhere still get excited when the two appear
together on the red carpet and applauded enthusiastically when Neil and Ellen
DeGeneres traded stories about their spouses on Ellen’s show. That’s the kind
of visibility some of us have waited our whole lives to see.
We feel like proud papas with Neil – first we watched him
grow up on screen, and now he’s grown into the hottest, out proud man on the
planet.
So say we all!

longest post ever:
I didn't vote since I'm not a guy but I think the top spot is soo well deserved. If I had voted NPH would have been there up with David Tennant!! (I am yet to check through the whole list to see if David made it. I don't think he's big outside of the UK so perhaps isn't? but in an interview John Barrowman asked if he knew he got 'sexiest man in the universe' from Pink Paper (UK gay mag) and his response was so adorable! - edit: eeeeee! David is on the list, he's dropped a few places but I had no idea he was in the 30's last year. If he were bigger in the states he'd be HIGH HIGH on the list I'm sure! (looks like you used a DW shot though? i know Sarah W says they don't do that for their list)
Also Matthew Mitcham! I didn't know ANY athletes really but watched some of the Olympics anyways, never really with anyone in particular to root for. Then he came onscreen, waved at the camera and before I had any clue he could actually win I was rooting for him. Thats NEVER happened to me with an athlete before! I wondered if he was gay then and turned out he was. I liked him before I wondered that though anyways
I discovered Anderson Cooper the other day. I saw a funny vid of him poking Ellen in their cyberboxes :p he is a 'silverfox' apparently. I would have voted for him too! Also Gareth David-Lloyd is pretty awesome.
Paul Rudd! James Sutton and Ashton Kutcher. on looksI wouldn't care, JS is not my type and my friends said i was weird when I didn't care for Ashton but knowing they are so gay-rights just makes them seem deeper and I rate them way higher now suddenly..
The AElton list seems to prize 'outness' a little higher than AEllen.. i might be wrong though. Leisha got 4th, Maddow got 6th!
I actually do not know a LOT of the top people so it really wouldn't have been fair if I had voted! BIG JUMP for James Franco, the wonders of being in Milk?
I've just noticed that you do the list backwards to AfterEllen which has the top people at the beginning (I guess yours is more of a proper countdown), it is confusing looking at both at once though!)
I think if I had voted it would have been:
David Tennant, Neil Patrick Harris, Paul Rudd, Shawn Pyfrom (did he make it?!!), Matthew Mitcham, James Marsters, Athony Stewart Head?, Anderson Cooper, Johnny Depp (he really doesn't place highly on here, curious)... James McAvoy? Barack Obama? julian Rhind-Tutt? Gareth David-Lloyd? Jon Stewart? :P Severus Snape (yus I know he's fictional!) ----probably somebody totally random like Ed Byrne, John Simm? Russel Howard? Christopher Ecceslton? .. haha, perhaps not. I saw an Adam Lambert vid, he's quite nice :)
thnx for all your hard work AE ppl!
edit: ooh first! sorry, its lame, but makes me happy somehow!

First!?
First!?Curse you purple squirrel, beat me by two minutes :/.Thank you to everyone at AE for compiling the list. Thank you to Ed who was nice enough to tell us the list would be up tonight. I'm glad to see i guessed correctly that James Franco, Luke and Matthew Mitcham would rank highly on the list. ( I did think that Mattthew would break top 10 though. He is so cute! ) Don't hurt Ed he tried to throw me off.
I am very glad to see that Jamie Bamber made the list and Tahmoh Penikett inched his way onto it. They are two of the main reasons i began to watch BSG lol. I ended up wathcing it religously. (because of the writing)
What are the chances the White House comments on this :]. If only the list was posted before the correspondents dinner.
Grats to NPH for grabbing the number 1 as well as the first out number 1.
The links to the Hottest Men of Color and over 40 are broken.
Men of color
hee hee hee :p I find it
hee hee hee :p
I find it amusing that I got first and I'm not even a guy. Its 'cus I got a twitter update. If it makes you feel any better I didn't realise AfterEllen had posted theirs too so while I was busy getting first here I ended up way off that on AfterEllen. Ironic. I think.

Tahmoh Penikett
It was great to see Tahmoh on the list! Jamie Bamber should always have a permanent spot, but Tahmoh was the overlooked Battlestar Galactica alum who always had great eyes and incredible shoulders. I didn't have him in my top 10 but glad he squeaked in!
so true
Tahmoh was always so overlooked in BSG. He originally wasn't supposed to be in the show post mini-series but according to imdb people liked his character so much he was written into the show post mini-series. I'm glad to see he working on Dollhouse now and plenty of it shirtless airtime too.
@ purple squirrel Lol that is pretty ironic. Grats on first :].
Great list!
I like this #1 better than last year's.
I thought Gareth would lose more places since there hasn't been new Torchwood in over a year and he isn't in anything else. Good, I'm very fond of him.
I love that Matthew Mitcham is so high on the list, and Adam Lambert and Darryl Stephens did well too, oh and Paul Rudd and Cheyenne Jackson
This is a great list, good work, gentlemen! :)
Yes!!!!!!!!
J.B. Was Cheated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dammit! My top guy is #2 again? And no top 10 placement for Gareth??? Feh.
On the plus side,i'll definitely look out for more of Mischa Collins and Mitch Hewer.YUM!
I'm glad Barack made it,as well. Overall, not a bad list.
I blame it on BBC
And no top 10 placement for Gareth???
If Torchwood S3 hadn't been pushed again and again, Gareth might have made it to the top 10. As it was I thought he'd fall out of the top 20, thank you for proving me wrong, guys :)
I knew it!
Haha Neil Patrick Harris was so the "Adam Lambert" of the AE Hot 100! I knew he was a shoe in since he has had a great year exposure wise and well he definitely deserves the crown! I still can't believe Jake Gyllehaal placed so high on the list, that is truly amazing. I am glad 3 out men topped the list, it is very encouraging to have many proud out gay men topping lists!
Also I think it is very funny that Jo Weil took Thore's place from last year! I'm sure that will make Jo happy that he beat his buddy this year!
The only 2 people on the list I disagreed with were JT and Zac Efron...I still have yet to see their appeal.
I don't see it either
Make That Three People..
count me number 4
Zac?!?!!? why?!?!?!
i'm so happy that my boys Jo and Thore are both in the top20 even though their show sucks. i used to be a die hard fan of VL until they're wasting the talents of these two wonderful actors.... but i still put them on my top 2 and 1 postion (respectively)...
i didn't vote for the top 3 but i'm glad they all occupy those seats.... they deserve it. go mo's!!!!!!
still can't believe zac made it sooo high.... whhhhyyyyyy?!?!?!?
Personally, he doesn't do it for me...
Zac..
I agree. And I'm too old too I guess.
But I find him beautiful. Just too young and skinny for my taste.

Great list and many thanks
Great list and many thanks for putting it together.
Managed 6 out of my 10 votes onto the top 100, ranging from #3 (Yeah Luke and Yeah Canada!) to #85(Canada again!)
A few names that I don’t know but the only thing that I really found surprising was Dustin Lance Black’s showing at #82. I was thinking that he would have shown up much higher.
We seem to be a large group of geeks as well. I roughly count somewhere about 25% of the list being involved in Science Fiction / Fantasy / comic book – action adventure type movies or TV programs.
You are quite right when you comment about how we love straight guys who play gay. I did not vote for #37 David Tennant even with being a huge fan of Doctor Who. However, since voting was completed, I have seen his performance as the conflicted and closeted scientist Arthur Eddington in the BBC’s Einstein and Eddington. Outstanding acting and he’s going to be getting a vote from me in 2010.
Amazing when you think about the numbers of selections we had for the categories such as Out and Men of Colour in just the last few years. Perhaps someday soon we will be voting on the sub category of Out Athletes.
Again, many thanks to the AfterElton staff for all their hard work in tabulating the list.
While your work is done, mine is just starting...I’m already taking names for the 2010 Hot 100.
(also add me to the list of those who don’t get the appeal of Zac Efron).
Great List!!
I thought this was a great list! I was so happy to see LOAH (Van and Jake), James Franco, Wilson Cruz, and many others. The one that made me jump out my seat in exclamation though was the always wonderful, true-to-heart #46.....DANIEL LEARY!!! You should have been #1!! Hugs and Kisses to you Daniel! Your loyal fans will definitely be wanting to see some skin now, for sure. *Insert cat call here* (And I hope everyone else at AfterElton.com is jealous of you! Rub it in their face, you kicked boo-tay!)
Also, congrats to everyone else who made the list, especially the OUT men. We are all beautiful creatures and God loves ALL OF US. Period.
Kitty
Daniel!
Wait
Good list
I would change it up a bit though, I mean if I could choose..
I can't stand JB, he is juct a cocky, self obsessed obnoxious guy. The last straw was when he showed his "package" on national television. I don't think he deserved to be the runner up, but whatever...
I would like Adam Lambert to be in the Top 10, though I am glad for the 16th place too..
Otherwise.. The list is OK I guess, great to see so many new faces. I agree with some and disagree with others, but that's how it's always gonna be, so.. But I'm pleased with it!
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
He didn't
Barrowman allegedly exposed himself on RADIO, with the studio webcamera off. No one saw anything.
Gotta agree...
...when I saw that an out man was #1 this year, I was afraid it was going to be Barrowman, whose appeal totally, totally escapes me. What a relief that #1 went to the wonderful, talented and appealing Neil Patrick Harris--for whom I voted.
Surprised Cheyenne Jackson actually dropped...he shoulda been #2, at the very least.
Barrowman runs the risk of
Barrowman runs the risk of overexposure. I love Torchwood and everything, but Barrowman the "celebrity" can be grating. Heck, he'll put in an appearance at the opening of an envelope if it will get his name out. His celebrity judging on BBC often turns to comments of his career, his success, and focus less on the contestants.
He should stick to singing, acting, and being a positive gay role model and less of a self-aggrandizing prat.
Agreed!! At this point, its
Yay! Great list and so
Yay! Great list and so deserving of NPH for the top spot. I never got the appeal of Jake G.
I was a little surprised Wentworth Miller isn't listed as a Man of Color, but remembered that Obama isn't listed as 40+, either, so those who are listed for these catagories must be those who made those specific lists.
Yay for Daniel! Glad to see him listed, too.
J.B. Didn't Expose Himself on TV....
Fantastic list!
That top 3 is golden. Neil Patrick Harris deserves the top stop.
Im really glad to see Ben Cohen on the list and ecstatic to see Daniel Leary in there as well. Taye Diggs should have been higher if you ask me, what is it about that man?
All in all a great rounds up.
I Can Live With. . .
. . .Neil Patrick Harris at Number One. . .
. . .but, sorry; Chad Allen and Matthew Mitcham is way hotter (for me) than Jensen Ackles and Hugh Jackman. . .
Great list, otherwise. . .
Disappointing outcome
This year I DID vote so I am even more disappointed that once again there are no men in this list who I find even remotely "hot". While I quite like many of the guys for their talent that´s where my interest in them ends.
Of course everyone has their own views of masculinity and "hotness" but the typical voter here couldn´t be more out of tune with my taste. I just don´t get what´s supposed to be "hot" about metrosexuality, "twinks" or skinny men. Don´t get me wrong, I am glad that I don´t get it, but still it would have been nice to see ONE person on this list that makes me think "yeah, he IS hot".
I'm curious
Not even one!
To each his own obviously,
Uhhh...
thank you
for your reply :) I don't get the "Disney Kid" either but there are so many different men on the list...
Not sure about the hotness factor, but Winstone is a terrific actor :)
Er...the only reason why a
I`m sorry
I was on about the staff
I agree with you Jason
I don't think I knew about this site a year ago, so I can't testifyabout any moanting about last year's pick not being gay (I wouldn't moan about Jake G. at all.). But I do agree with you it is nice having a gay guy at number one. While I respect Neil P.H.'s work, outness, and the fact that is paving the way for others, I'm not sure I would go right to hot when describing him. But he is a handsome guy and a class act.
Eric
Eternal Gale Crush
Oh Gale harold can cause me some serious drooling... it was also nice seeing NPH at #1
Note
I have to admit it was kinda funny seeing Barack Obama on this list and Michelle Obama on the list in afterellen, man we gay people have been having some special interest in politics latelly... lol
Indeed
The List Goes On!
afhickman
Fun list! And some surprises, which isn't always bad. Six of my top ten made it, although I was hoping one might take the top spot. I'm going to have to read the text to understand how the voting was done, but I'm assuming there are at least three other lists upcoming. I know some of you would have voted for Jeremie Renier and Danile Bruehl, but them furrin names sure are hard to spell. And, besides, it looks like there's going to be a next year! Long live AfterElton's Hot 100!
"The mountain has wings."
shocked, i tell ya.....
jake isn't number 1? i'm shocked!
...except not. i had a feeling about that. anyways, i thought JB would be 1 or 2....and neil 3...matthew mitcham 1...
and zac efron? really? boo.
utterly surpriced with this
John Barrowman...
John Barrowman......NPH...well I suppose not everyone has the same taste but still, these two as second and first leaves me a little unimpressed!
now Wolverine...thats a hot hot man!
The order
I've recently been noticing, since I changed my web browser, that the AfterElton logo at the top has text under it you can't see, the mission statement: "Because visibility matters" And while it's the mission of the web site, when choosing our list, you can definitely see that exposer, either on an active TV show (or 6, like our top 2) makes a difference in the voting No one can deny the hotness that is, say Nick Adams, but if you're not in NYC, you're not going to see a lot of him - out of sight, out of mind for a write in poll.
But I think we've captured a lot of diversity here - maybe our best in the 3 years we've been running the poll, with athletes, politicians, comedians (Daniel!) joining our actors and singers. We're casting our net wider as a community, and as we do, we'll become more visible as one. It's a cycle that feeds itself, and can't help but be good for us.
That's probably the best
I agree
The Scots have staying power!!
It is what it is...
I have yet to see a "Top ___ List" that I agree with...be it in magazines, on VH1 or here...be it about movies, books, TV shows or men.
I do think it's nice to see several of these guys get recognition by being on the list.
I'll never understand the gay communities fascination with Zac Efron. I can't believe Matthew Mitcham didn't rank higher. I don't understand why there had to be 4 different lists.
Congrats to all who made the list.
