Is "InfoMania"'s Bryan Safi the Gayest Man in the World? Quite Possibly

Thanks to his “That’s Gay” segment on Current TV’s Infomania, Bryan Safi has become one of the most recognizable gay comedians in American pop culture. His satirical segments have taken on everything from the ridiculous phrase “No homo” to the terror that is gays attending prom to protecting the sacred institution of divorce from the gays.

In fact, Bryan is so immersed in gay culture, he claims to now be the gayest person on the planet. AfterElton.com recently caught up with Bryan to debate who really deserves that title, how “That’s Gay” came to be and much more.

AfterElton: I just want to clear one thing up so our readers aren't confused: even though we're both gay, this interview will be "no homo", right?
Bryan Safi:
Of course! Just make sure you put it at the very end.

AE: Will do. I know that you lay claim to being the gayest person on the planet, but I need to ask you what your credentials are to prove that claim. After all, I've been editing AfterElton for five years and I bet I've watched more gay TV shows and written the word “gay” many, many more times than you have.
BS:
Well, how many people have come up to you and said "You're the gay guy!"?

AE: That only happened to me one time on an airplane, so not that many times.
BS:
I was actually in Palm Springs this past weekend and I got it a few times. Not that I don't love it, but ... I host a show called "That's Gay" and I do have people coming up to me saying, "You're the gay guy." I even have people who watch the show say "You know," – normally, like, straight guys – "Sometimes I'm uncomfortable around it, but I like it. You're a cool gay guy."

I feel like ... I don't know if I've earned that title, but I'll take that title.

AE: You're just gonna declare it for yourself? Fair enough. Impressive move, Mr. Safi.
BS:
You know what, though? I won't put up a fight if you want to do it, too. We can rule together.

AE: Co-Emperors of the gay world.
BS:
I like that word, emperor. That's great.

AE: Some of our readers might not be familiar with Current TV, so why don't you explain what it is.
BS:
I work on a show called Infomania, which is on Thursday nights. It's a 30-minute show, sort of like The Soup. It sort of takes the week in media and then kind of skewers it. It's very funny and "That's Gay" is a segment that appears on that show, every Thursday night. So my segment, for instance, is about how the media portrays gay people and stereotypes and all of that. Other parts of the show do that same sort of thing to the week in media.

AE: Would it be fair to say that Current TV is sort of the polar opposite of Fox TV? You know, you do actual journalism on Current TV?
BS:
Our stuff is really smart and really interesting.

AE: And it has a bit more of a liberal bent, right?
BS:
I would say a lot of it's ... you know, Vanguard, they did a lot of the documentaries and their thing is "the stories no one else is telling." I think that is sort of throughout the network. Yes, it's edgier for sure.
