The 2nd Annual Gay People's Choice Awards Winners

After ten days of polling and tens of thousands of votes cast, the readers of AfterElton.com have selected their favorites in mainstream popular culture. The polling included 20 categories – everything from Favorite Male Movie Star to Favorite Late Night Talk Show. We also threw in a few special categories (Worst Film, Favorite Out Female Celebrity, Best Blog) you aren't likely to see at other awards ceremonies this year.

As you'll discover, in several categories the resulting Gay People's Choice Award winners diverge quite a bit from what a mainstream, predominantly straight audience might select. But on the flip side, in certain categories the winners seem downright surprising selections for a predominantly gay audience. (Check out the "Favorite TV Comedy" winner and you'll see what we mean!)

We'll leave it to you to parse the meaning of these results. If nothing else, as a barometer of our readers' interests they've certainly given us some ideas about celebrities and TV shows we should probably be devoting more time to here on the site.

Without further ado, the 2nd Annual Gay People's Choice Award winners

How is it that a relative newcomer who's only major credit was a summer blockbuster sci fi film could beat out the likes of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Robert Downey Jr.? We understand how Colin Firth could do so well in this category (given his turn in A Single Man) But Chris Pine? Truly a dark horse winner. Among the write-in candidates for favorite male movie star the only ones to garner significant support were Johnny Depp and Hugh Jackman.

Not really a surprise here. It seems Meryl Streep is just as popular with the gays as she is with everybody else. Among the "Other" candidates only Kate Winslet gained any traction with our readers.
