Yankees' Bleacher Creatures Need New Anti-Gay Material

The Bleacher Creatures are a diehard group of New York Yankees fans who have been sitting together for years in the right field bleachers of Yankee Stadium. (They now occupy Section 203 of the team's new stadium)

They do a lot of heckling of whatever team the Yankees happen to be playing during home games. All fun and games, right? Heh.

But they also go after fans of opposing teams who are unlucky enough to be seated nearby.

They have a number of chants. This one, sung to the tune of The Village People's "Y.M.C.A.", they've been using since the early nineties. Believe it or not, it's still in heavy rotation:

Gay man!
Get on up off your knees
I said gay man - you will catch a disease
I said gay man - don't touch me please, because
You have got a dis-ease

Gay man
Wipe that sperm off your chin
I said gay man - what you do is a sin
I said gay man, I won't let you in, because
You have got a dis-ease

I saw you sucking some D. I. C. K.
They have every size for your mouth to enjoy

repeat chorus.

These guys really need to get some new material. Singing something as vile as that in a professional sports stadium was bad enough back in the nineties, but I guess you could find a few unenlightened souls to muster a chuckle.

But today? With growing awareness of gay kids being bullied to suicide in our schools? Adults are going to sing a song like that in public?

The video below comes courtesy of Sean Chapin. It shows the Bleacher Creatures in action and draws the obvious connection between their behavior and the potential consequences for vulnerable gay teens.

The footage of the Bleacher Creatures in this video might be from a couple years ago (you can see another unedited performance of the song here), but according to a tipster to Gothamist, you would have seen the exact same thing at a Yankees/Twins playoffs game this past Saturday.

Honestly, I don't know what to say. This brings great shame to the Yankees, to their fans, and to New York. 

If you happen to attend a Yankees home game and sit anywhere near the right field bleachers – do try and film the Bleacher Creatures singing their ugly "Y.R.U.GAY" chant. Make sure and pan the crowd.

Then post it online for posterity, so they can deal with the embarrassment of forever looking like total barbaric a-holes.

Editor's note: AfterElton editor Michael Jensen has been in touch with the Yankees and is trying to get answers as to why this has been tolerated for this long and what the team intends to do about this.

Editor's update: I just spoke with the Yankees and they report that this video is from four years ago, and that they have previously dealt with the Bleacher Creatures and told them this behavior is unacceptable. They are meeting with them again this Friday and will reiterate that fact. As Dennis says, if you attend a Yankees game and see this behavior again, please let us know.
