Kristy McNichol Gets Her "Happy Ending"

Kristy McNichol is no stranger to People magazine

If you're of a certain age, Kristy McNichol was a part of your childhood. She was everywhere in the 1970s and 1980s. In so many ways, her shows Empty Nest and Family helped redefine the structure of television families. Then she was gone, dropping out of the public eye to concentrate on her health.

Now she's speaking out, and coming out as a lesbian, via her publicist. At age 49, McNichol has been living with her partner Martie Allen for twenty years. Inspired by by the rash of bullying in the news, "She hopes that coming out can help kids who need support. She would like to help others who feel different."

McNichol shared a photograph of her with her partner with People. She spends her time on yoga, tennis, and raising her miniature dachshunds. "She is very happy and healthy. And she enjoys living a very private life."
