Kobe Bryant May Be an Ass, but Bret Easton Ellis is Less Than Zero

Sigh. Yesterday was a disappointing day, with highly publicized homophobic rants coming both from an NBA star throwing a hissy fit over a referee call, and a formerly relevant "literary brat pack" novelist tweeting about Glee and HIV puddles.

But which was worse? At least Kobe Bryant can claim what he said was in the heat of the moment. F*cking rapist. Oh sorry, what I said there was in the heat of the moment and in no way reflects my opinion of the rapist community. (Pretty well sums up my feelings on Kobe though.) Also, at least the NBA appeared to take his transgression seriously — he's supposed to be a role model after all — and fined him $100,000. So good on them for that.

No one is fining Bret Easton Ellis however. Oh, if only someone could. Apparently he has a new book coming out and he's made the calculation that the quickest way to build up his Twitter base (141,000 followers and counting!) is to post really odious tweets like this.... 

Unlike Kobe Bryant, Bret Easton Ellis thought about what he was saying here. It wasn't an ugly outburst made in the heat of the moment — it was calculated to elicit a reaction. And he largely succeeded with that. But shame on him for dragging Glee and Chris Colfer into his craven ploy to get some attention. Seriously, shame on him. If he wanted to tweet out something disgusting and unsettling why not just send out a twitpic of his own pimpled ass? I for one would have had more respect for him.
