Reality Reiterated: Margaret Cho Cuts the Rug ... and Cuts Up on "Dancing with the Stars"

If this show does one thing well, it would be casting the widest possible net of celebrities and, um, “celebrities” known to film, television, stage, sports, and train-wreck reality shows. This time around, we’ve even got a “political” daughter.

Here’s the cast for this season: David Hasselhoff, Michael Bolton, Brandy, Margaret Cho, Rick Fox (NBA), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing!), Florence Henderson (Mrs. Brady is 76-years- old!), Kyle Massey (Disney kid), Bristol Palin (Alaska’s fav?), Audrina Partridge (The Hills), Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, and Kurt Warner (NFL).

I have to say, the ladies were the standouts this week. Brandy and Audrina were pretty good, and Jennifer Grey was phenomenal. There was a touching moment when they showed her in rehearsal as she was learning the steps to a Dirty Dancing song and she broke down, remembering Patrick Swayze.

When it came time to perform, Baby was back out of that corner!

The obvious disappointments were first-to-go David Hasselhoff, the two sports guys who were charming but fairly stiff, and Michael Bolton.

Bristol was okay, although I had to giggle when she was introduced as a teen pregnancy advocate or some such nonsense. And did anyone else think her dance partner was touching her way too much?

The surprise (for good and for bad) was Margaret Cho. She told a sad story about being in dance as a kid and being called fat. It was easy to see she had some good moves but, like the judges, I had to agree that throwing in comedy (getting wrapped up in her gold wing things and falling at the end) was A) a risk, and B) a mistake.

Nonetheless, I look forward to what she’ll do next week.

I’m also looking forward to seeing Bristol come out of her shell and stop being such an advocate. I ’m sorry. I’m still giggling over that one.
