Big Shoes to Fill: The Sexiest Recastings in Movies

The tough part of remaking a movie is in the casting, finding someone who can both recapture what made the original performance work and still bring something the audience can't find in the original. In the looks department, sometimes these actors have big shoes to fill and sometimes their good looks is something new about the character. Here are some of our favorites:

Kenny Wormald, Footloose

Kevin Bacon brought a lot to the original Footloose, a mix of idealism, youthful swagger and an ability to move in a way that perfectly conveyed the feeling of freedom that comes when you're dancing. Kenny Wormald certainly has the potential to live up to Bacon's performance, with his boy-next-door looks, glare of teenage rebellion and hint of adorkable (that tie!). We'll find out for sure this weekend, when Footloose hits theaters.

David Tennant, Fright Night

We expected Colin Farrell to bring the sexiness to Fright Night. After all, he had to step into Chris Sarandon's hunky shoes. And while four seasons of Doctor Who proved that David Tennant was a charmer, we forgot how much sexiness he could bring to a movie. Clearly, we let our Casanova DVD sit on the shelf for too long, but we also blame the Doctor Who costume department who for dressing Tennant in too many layers. Is it too much to expect the Doctor to take the occasional vacation someplace where he would lay out in the sun before the eventual alien invasion?

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and John Cho, Star Trek

When the Star Trek franchise got a big screen reboot, the whole crew of the Enterprise got better looking. Sure, that was a bigger challenge with Captain Kirk and Lt. Sulu, but Chris Fine Pine and John Cho were more than up to that challenge. Too bad, this reboot didn't add the bromance that was a part of the Hawaii Five-O reboot.

Dan Futterman, The Birdcage

As The Birdcage was getting ready to open in theaters, we wondered if Robin Williams and Nathan Lane could live up to their French counterparts. After seeing the remake, we remembered another important part of La Cage aux Folles: Rémi Laurent's just adorable presence as Renato's (Armand in the remake) son. Seeing Dan Futterman on the big screen was a good reminder.

Will Smith, I Am Legend

Based on the influential 1954 novel, Will Smith followed in the footsteps of Vincent Price and Charton Heston as a man living in a Manhattan that's been deserted after being devastated by a virus that turns people into zombies. Thankfully, living in a city wih no civilization didn't stop him from maintaining his looks, though with no hairstylists left, he was forced to just shave his head rather than attempting to trim his sideburns evenly.
