Maher waves bye bye to Falwell

There are a lot of things Jerry Falwell said, did, thought, and advocated in his life, but Bill Maher knows it's all about the gays. In a scathing little eulogy (do you still call it a euology when it begins "Death isn't always sad"?), he gets right to the heart of Falwell's legacy:

Now, I know that you're not supposed to speak ill of the dead but I think we can make an exception because speaking ill of the dead was kind of Jerry Falwell's hobby. He was the guy who said that AIDS was God's punishment for homosexuality and that 9/11 was brought on by pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays and the ACLU, or as I like to call them – my studio audience (wild clapping and screaming).

But I found it surreal this week watching people on the news praise Falwell, followed by a clip package of what he actually said. Things like homosexuals are part of a vile and satanic system that will be utterly anahiliated. If ... you're not a born again Christian you're a failure as a human being. Feminists just need a man around the house. There is no separation of church and state. And of course, everyone's favorite - the purple Teletubby is gay.

Jerry Falwell found out that you could launder your hate through the cover of God's will. He didn't hate gays. God does. All Jerry Falwell's power came from name dropping God. And gay people should steal that trick. You know what? Don't say you want something because it's your right as a human being. Say you want it because it's your religion.

The whole beautiful nasty snappy thing is, of course, on YouTube.

The out actor and musician on being the Gay Pimp.
When it comes to sketch comedy, queer can mean both “gay” and “funny”.

Project Top Gay?

We came across a rather amusing April Fool's Day article that Reality Blurred ran yesterday about Bravo's gay-frenzied production slate. The joke article announces a new Bravo show called Project Top Gay, in which people of all sexual orientations compete to be the gayest reality competition personailty.

My favorite line:

Jonathan Adler will serve as a judge, primarily because he came up with the show’s witty new catchphrase, “Nanny nanny boo boo, you lose.” He’ll tell those who aren’t eliminated, “You’re so gay today, you can stay, hooray!”

All in good fun, I think -- someone's gotta be thinking, "Why didn't we come up with that?!"

  • Last's Night's Ugly Betty: Don't Ask Don't Tell

"They really did remove your balls in the operation," said Wilhelmina (Vanessa Williams) to Alexis (Daniel's post-op transgendered sister, played by Rebecca Romijn) on last night's episode of Ugly Betty.

The episode entitled "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," while not about the military, was definitely chock-full of our favorite characters at MODE Magazine trying to disguise hidden agendas or pretending to be something they're not, and finding the cojones to be true to themselves.

At the show's opening, Bradford Meade (Alan Dale) attempts to block his former son-turned-daughter, Alexis, from becoming a part of the family's magazine business. While he's clearly uncomfortable with her new gender, mother Claire (Judith Light) reminds her husband that she in fact owns the magazine (he put it under her name as a tax shelter), and is making Alexis co-editor in chief with their son, Daniel (Eric Mablus). Did I mention mom is under arrest and handcuffed to a hospital bed?

In the meantime, Wilhelmina's gay assistant (and partner in crime), Marc (Michael Urie) gets his tighties all in a bunch because his mother, Ms. Weiner (played by Broadway diva Patti Lupone) has come to New York City for a cat show, and to visit her "heterosexual" son. He convinces Betty (America Fererra) to pretend to be his babe...
