Two Gay Guys Chewing the Fat: Gay and Lesbian Characters

This week's Two Gay Guys vlog is one of those cross-over stunts the networks love like when Ally McBeal's Calista Flockhart showed up on The Practice. But ours is much more gay (think the cast of The L Word dropping in on Will & Grace) because our friends from AfterEllen.com, Lori and Sarah, join in on our conversation.

We were all together during our "vacation" (I was working on the Annual AfterElton.com Hot 100 List the whole bloody weekend!) in Palm Springs and our chat turned to gays and lesbians on television and movies and our favorite gay portrayals. Brent and I rhapsodize about Xena and Gabrielle on Xena, and Willow and Tara on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, our two favorite portrayals of same-sex relationships on TV.

Meanwhile, Lori and Sarah realize how few gay male relationships there are on television which is ironic because there are so many more gay characters than lesbian ones. Nonetheless, they like Kevin (Matthew Rhys) on Brothers & Sisters and Brian Kinney on Queer as Folk. They also really dug the movie Big Eden.

Naturally, we decided to film our conversation for this weeks vlog! (And this means we can write off the whole trip on our taxes, right?) So sit back, watch us wrinkle up as we move from hot tub to pool and back again!

Lucy Lawless loves you

It's been well established that gay men love Xena, but now we know: Xena loves you back.

At Saturday night's Human Rights Campaign awards gala in San Francisco, I told Lucy Lawless she had a lot of fans on her our website, and her face lit up. "Really? That's wonderful," she said. "I’m always counting on the women, but I love beautiful men. I love doing things with beautiful men, so I say bring it on. And bring your friends."

Lucy swept into the media reception before the dinner wearing a low-cut black evening gown, changed into a shiny catsuit, and then appeared on stage in a sparkling golden gown that would have been perfect on Rita Hayworth in Gilda. She posed for photos with keynote speaker Elizabeth Edwards, HRC Equality Award recipient George Takei, and HRC president Joe Solmonese, before providing a little self-described "comic relief" and serving as the world's most glamorous auctioneer at the fundraising event.

On stage, she cajoled one bidder into forking over $5000 for a luxury cruise ("His name is Brian, he's with AT&T, he's single, and he's at table 6") and even offered to sit on laps to get the bidding up before the final gavel dropped on a five-figure gourmet catered dinner for 14.

To Make a Long Story Short ... Neil schools, O'Reilly continues to amaze, and more

  • Neil Patrick Harris to give a master class at the Broadway Theatre Project. He could really be giving a class on having the best gay year ever, the way he's been handling himself since coming out.
  • Bill O'Reilly: gays at baseball games, bad enough; gays at baseball games when hats are distributed to children, completely unacceptable! Is this guy effing serious?!
  • Yesterday we posted on the announced gay forum for Democratic Presidential candidates. Apparently Mike Gravel (who didn't meet the HRC's $100,000 funding requirement) is very upset that he wasn't invited, particularly given his outspoken support of gay issues. HRC says it's simply a matter of giving time to the candidates actually likely to make it to office (hence the funding requirement). Thoughts?
  • SyFyPortal released its final noms for its annual sci-fi awards, and George Takei (yay!) and Thomas Dekker (crickets) are both there for Heroes.
  • For you Xena fans: Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle) will play the lead in upcoming Sci Fi Channel original The Genesis Code, with Big Eden's Tim DeKay (pictured at top) as her hubby.
