The Business

Coming soon to the small screen: Jackie Woodman and The Business

This Sunday, two gay-interest series begin their second seasons on IFC: The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman and The Business. Jackie Woodman was one of those series I meant to check out during its first season (it got plenty of critical praise) but never got around to actually watching. I first heard about The Business from one of Michael's TCA round-up posts.

The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman follows an aspiring screenwriter (played by Laura Kightlinger) dealing with the dysfunctions of Hollywood. Patrick Bristow (pictured on the left) plays Mitchell, a gay assistant at the entertainment magazine where Jackie works to pay the bills. I have to admit, I love that Jackie Woodman offers cocktail suggestions for each episode, even though the first few sound a little too sweet for my palate. You may know out actor Bristow from his roles on Ellen and in the glorious trainwreck Showgirls. (BJ: Favorite quote of his from the latter: "She's no butterfly!")

The Business, meanwhile, is a Canadian comedy about the producer of a Girls Gone Wild-style series of videos who tries to go legitimate. The first season followed the making of his first mainstream film, the second follows the studio trying to build on the success of their first movie. A minor character in season one, Terrence (Matt Silver) plays a gay character who falls for a new co-worker (Neil Napier, pictured on the right) in the second episode. Our own Two Gay Guys didn't care for the second season but comedy's pretty subjective, so I'll see how I react to this one.

Both series' web sites have a short video clip recapping the first season, making it easier to jump in.

Two Gay Guys in Palm Springs

Due to my travel schedule as well as a laptop clearly possessed by some sort of demonic spirit, it took us a little longer than expected to get up a new TWO GAY GUYS vlog post. But we're back at last and coming to you live from Palm Springs, CA where it's 105 frickin' degrees. Honestly, why does anyone live here? I don't care how nice it is in January!

But I digress. This is one of our "Passing Judgment" segments and this time out we discuss the AMC channel's new show Mad Men, the second season of IFC's The Business, and two new books — Seventy Times Seven and The Saints of Augustine. So sit back, relax and enjoy!

TCA Round-up: Bravo, Mad Men, The Business, and more!

Well, a long weekend of panels at the Television Critics Association is over and I've just finished packing, but I wanted to give everyone a quick update on some of the highlights of what I've learned you can expect to be watching soon. Details and full interviews are to follow later!

  • Out actor Bryan Batt has a juicy role on AMC's Mad Men, a show set in the 1960's Golden Age of New York advertising. Soprano's writer and co-executive producer Matthew Weiner created this one and I suspect it's going to be worth keeping an eye on. Weiner had a hand in the Soprano's Gay Vito storyline and he and I chatted afterward about the new show. Details to follow! (Oh, and I had some face time with Bryan as well!)
  • The final season of Queer Eye will air this fall and includes a "Straight Guy Pageant" hosted by Susan Lucci. I'm not sure if the Bravo spokesperson was kidding or not, but a tiara and sash were actually mentioned.
  • Project Runway's fourth season arrives sometime toward the end of the year. I spoke with Tim Gunn after his presentation for his new show Tim Gunn's Guide to Style and the man is every bit as elegant, dapper, and dashing as he appears on television. Check Friday's BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! for more of my conversation with Tim.
  • Top Chef will have a fourth season and this time the setting will be Chicago. It sounds like Ted Allen might be returning as well. Bravo also announced that the current round of Top Chef Miami will have a live finale. That should be interesting!
  • IFC's The Business will go where few TV shows dare to go -- full frontal male nudity. Oh, and it's gay male nudity.
  • Finally, I very briefly met and chatted with CNN's Anderson Cooper. He's a sweet, funny guy, and, no, that topic did not come up. I'll explain more later about what we discussed!
