World AIDS Day: Annie Lennox "Sings" about it

Annie Lennox has never been the sort of pop star to use her celebrity to get into fancy shops after hours or create overpriced clothing lines. She's proving yet again she wants to help those less fortunate with her new single "Sing" from her latest album Songs of Mass Destruction. To help raise money for HIV/AIDS awareness, Annie has also released special remixes of her single Sing to help raise funds for the HIV/AIDS organization Treatment Action Campaign.

Annie so rocks! Here is the video for "Sing" with an opening by Nelson Mandela.

It's Out! The Out 100 ... er, 101 ... cover!

Here it is, folks, Out Magazine's biggest cover of the year, which features Out 100 special honorees Bryan Batt, Jennifer Hudson, Mary-Louise Parker, Bill T. Jones, and Thom Browne.

But that's not all: breaking news from the Out Mothership reveals that this year there will be a 101st honoree, Annie Lennox. Lennox will receive the Humanitarian of the Year award and will screen a short film detailing her efforts to combat AIDS in Africa at tonight's ceremony.

Congrats to all honorees, many of whom I hope to attack at the party tonight. For the full list and lotsa fun pics, check out the Out 100 website.

UPDATE: It also looks like I'll be Twittering live from the event tonight right here on the blog, so check back in for all the up-to-the-minute dish. It'll be like the As the World Turns liveblogs, only I'll have pants on!

Divas Dropping Albums: Chaka Khan, Annie Lennox

We have news of upcoming releases from two of our favorite divas to report on. First comes that force of nature that is Chaka Khan. Her new album drops next Tuesday. Called Funk This, it is the artist’s first studio album in over ten years. We say about damn time!

According to Chaka: “The album may remind people of my early Rufus albums because I’m in a similar ‘soul space.’ I’ve been on a little journey in the last few years, finding Yvette again.” (Referring to her birth name.)

“I went through a period of being insecure. I’m walking a different path now. I’ve changed. This album is different from any other album I’ve recorded because it reflects what I’m about, who I am now. The album is called, Funk This because it’s funky!”

The album contains some originals but also has several reinterpretations of classics from other artists including Prince’s “Sign ‘O’ the Times,” Joni Mitchell’s “Ladies’ Man,” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Castle Made Of Sand.”

Chaka’s first single is “Disrespectful,” and Mary J. Blige guests on the track. You can hear a snippet of “Disrespectful” (as well as a shout out from Chaka to her gay fans at AfterElton.com) by clicking here.

Second up is the release of Annie Lennox’s latest album, Songs of Mass Destruction, due to hit stores October 2nd.

I love Annie, although sometimes I find myself wishing she did a few more uptempo songs. No matter. I still can’t wait for the album. The music video for the first single, “Dark Road,” appears after the break. It’s a gorgeous track, and Annie looks fabulous in the video.

To Make a Long Story Short ... glam-gay rockers, homophobic sports show hosts, and more!

  • Two presenters on Brit radio network Talksport are heavily criticized for making homophobic comments referring to gays as "paedophiles" who are "preaching the gospel of perversion." I've checked my King James version and I'm not seeing that particular gospel, so it must be some sports reference that my stupid gay pedophile brain just isn't grasping. Oh, and I also throw like a girl.
  • Annie Lennox fans take note: the video for "Dark Road", the first single off of her upcoming album, is up today on Amazon.
  • The death of super-rich Merv Griffin last week prompted us to ask what the courtesy period was for outing a closeted dead celebrity, and apparently Reuters is flip-flopping on the subject as well.
  • Gerard Way (above), the lead singer of emo-glam sensation My Chemical Romance, apparently likes to make the boys at his concerts takes their shirts off, shouting, "Just the boys!" and gets all friendly-like with other band members while performing. Upon hearing the news, David Bowie yawns, throws another brick of hundred-dollar-bills into the marble fireplace, goes back to cuddling with Iman.
  • Leona Helmsley has died at 87. Gentlemen, start your Halloween costumes.
