A gay(ish) holiday movie, we love Graham, Jodie's announcement and more!

Just announced! The 2008 Golden Globe nominations

Today the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominations for the 65th annual Golden Globe Awards. While there were very few legitimately gay films to choose from in the first place, some films with gay pedigrees (Hairspray, Sweeney Todd) racked up the nods.

Here's a rundown of the gay-related noms. They're trickling out gradually (and there are a lot to get through, between movies and television), so I'm updating as they hit the wire. Refresh for updates!

To Make a Long Story Short ... Tony Dungy is back, Jodie peeks out, and more!

  • As much as I love Chris from Project Runway (and I really really do), when he said he moved to NYC because of Sex and the City I seriously almost barfed, as that show made me want to move OUT of the city and to somewhere where I wouldn't be trampled by the army of bitch-booted do-me bachelorettes who invaded Manhattan because of it. Regardless, here's the thoroughly underwhelming trailer for the film. Enjoy.
  • Colts coach Tony Dungy (shown in the nightmare-haunting pic at the top) is at it again with his gay-hating ways, noting that if he had a gay on his team he would "talk to him about (his) views on it, what the Bible says about it." I guess in response I'd ask him what the Bible says about his working every Sunday for 9 months out of the year. BAM!
  • The Queerty boys love Chris Matthews, and with quotes like this one, I'm tempted to fall for him myself: "My own response to the Craig story is to side with gay marriage. If we don‘t respect people, how do we expect them to respect themselves? Anyway, that‘s just my reaction."
  • Didja hear the one about Jodie Foster mentioning her longtime partner in a speech earlier this week? If not, get the full scoop from the guy who was in the room, AfterElton.com contributor Greg Hernandez.
  • That's it for us, but be sure you read Michael's lemony-fresh Best.Gay.Week.Ever. column (now with more gay angel!) and have a great weekend!

Neil Patrick Harris nominated for People's Choice Award

The nominees for the 34th Annual People's Choice Awards were announced last night, and among them is out actor Neil Patrick Harris, in the "Favorite Scene Stealing Star" category. He's up against Chandra Wilson of Grey's Anatomy and Richard Belzer of Law & Order: SVU. Needless to say, it would be awesome to have an out, proud actor win a popular vote like this one, so be sure to click the link at the bottom and cast your ballot! Here's a rundown of the other gay-significant noms...

Celebrities:
Gay-faves Sally Field and Katherine Heigl nabbed noms for "Favorite Female TV Star", Jodie Foster is nominated for "Favorite Female Action Star" and Queen Latifah and Drew Barrymore are nominated for "Favorite Leading Lady". Ellen, Whoopi, and Wanda Sykes make "Favorite Funny Female Star" the best category of the bunch, by far.

Television:
Dirty Sexy Money and Pushing Daisies, which both have gay creators, are up for "Favorite New Drama Series", and out producer Russell T Davies' Doctor Who is up for "Favorite Sci-Fi Series".

Movies:
Recently outed wizard Albus Dumbledore appears in "Favorite Movie Drama" nominee Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and homophobic pigfest Wild Hogs somehow made it into the "Favorite Movie Comedy" category. Likewise, homophobic yet sure-to-win 300 pops up in the "Favorite Action Movie" noms.

Afterthought: I find it interesting that 2 out of 3 "Favorite On-Screen Duo" noms are bromances (Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker and George Clooney/Brad Pitt) and the third, Tobey Maguire/Kirsten Dunst, acted more like they were going through a messy divorce than like lovers in Spiderman 3. Where's the romance?

For all the nominees - and more importantly, to vote yourself (go, NPH!) - head on over to the official website. The winners will be announced on January 8th in a broadcast hosted by Queen Latifah.

  • Two Gay Guys: The Closeted Celebrity Edition

It's time for yet another edition of Two Gay Guys starring moi and my better half, Brent. In this week's edition we discuss Jodie Foster who is out promoting The Brave One, her new flick which hits screens this Friday. We ponder Jodie's willingness to discuss Americans' tendency toward violence, the fact she is an atheist, her friendship with Mel Gibson, and even her kids, all while refusing to mention if she shares her life with anyone romantically.

This edition also features our first guest dropping by to chat with us. I can't tell you his name as he's a closeted gay celebrity — who ironically insists he isn't closeted! Inspired by his visit, we decide that we've had it with closeted celebrities and blow the door off of Hollywood's closet. That's right — we name names! It's an audacious step to take, but someone has to do it!

But for those who loved our Brokeback Mountain reenactment (that's the guy locked up in the Missouri mental institution who thinks we're destined to be together forever) we bring you a few choice lines from The Silence of the Lambs.

Jodie Foster's privacy policy under public scrutiny

A very interesting article ran recently in More magazine about Jodie Foster (whose new movie, The Brave One, looks like a marginally classier Ms. 45), including an interview that felt kind of like a "glass closet" version of "Who's on First?":

    Let's talk about your ring.
This one? [Proffers left hand] It's Tiffany, an eternity ring.
You're wearing it on your wedding ring finger.
I am. I've always worn a ring. Even taking photos. Even on magazine covers. I don't take it off.
Don't you think wearing a ring like that raises questions?
Well, but that's my life. ... My life is my life. I'm not going to change my life for anybody. I just don't talk about my dad, my health, who I voted for or what I think of the death penalty because that would be trivializing my life, selling it for a magazine. I don't have any problems with anybody reporting on my life. It's just that I'm not going to bring my family into that. The number-one reason for that is: Why would I invite — encourage — more people to sit outside my door and wait for my children to go to school? I don't have any desire to participate in it.

While Jodie goes further than most gay-but-not-gay celebs in discussing-but-not-discussing her sexuality, it's still a fascinating balancing act, and one that's becoming increasingly less appreciated. Our sister site, AfterEllen.com, noted the oddness in the fact that while Foster wears a wedding ring and her children share her partner's last name, Foster won't actually say that she's married or has a partner.

Or as Michael Musto notes in his recent column (note: corrected from original post):

"Speaking of gay problems, for years we've given Jodie Foster kudos for at least never saying, "I'm straight, world." But by now her weird closet dance has gotten too ugly for TV, with her giving interviews about how she craves privacy, though she'll then press into elaborate detail about what it's like as the parent of two wonderful, growing boys. (The single parent, the way she tells it. When a tape recorder's on, her partner stays invisible and unspeakable.) In More magazine, Jodie explains, "I just don't talk about my health, my dad, who I voted for, or what I think of the death penalty, because that would be trivializing my life, selling it for a magazine." So lesbianism is so dirty it even stays off the list of taboo subjects. That's closeted!"

it's interesting that there aren't any partnered men on the whole "glass closet" list that are in the same boat as Foster when it comes to keeping a family out of the discussion (most are single or not nearly as high in profile, and none have children, to my knowledge). I guess it's a lot easier to hide a single person in the closet with you than a whole clan; will the continued rise in same-sex families with children "up the ante" in terms of gay celebs who want both a family and their "privacy"?
