Tin Man

Geek Talk video blog: Angry Puppy edition

The Geek Talk guys, Marc and Lee, are back ... and after - what, 6 weeks? - they've finally settled on a name for the vlog. And that name is ...

Angry Puppy!

As I do not speak geek myself, I have no idea what that means. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy this installment just as much as the fellas' previous outings. In this episode, the guys discuss the Futurama movie, Marc gives a tour of his gay action figure collection (Captain Jack Harkness would make a great stocking stuffer, no?) and they share their pick for Website of the Week.

To Make a Long Story Short ... Tin Man scores, David Hyde Pierce reenlists and more!

  • The Sci Fi Channel's Tin Man scored a very respectable 6.3 million viewers in its debut. That's Alan Cumming helping to build a Tin Man-inspired Habitat for Humanity house. Presumably it comes insured against tornados.
  • Out actor David Hyde Pierce has re-signed for another sixth months as the lead in Broadway's musical comedy Curtains, for which he won the Tony. His stint will now run through the end of August ... I guess I shouldn't be holding my breath for a Wet Hot American Summer 2?
  • John Barrowman's co-host on Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's in-the-works reality competition to find the UK's best choir will be singer and talk show host Charlotte Church.
  • Some pranksters thought adding a bunch of gay jokes to Australian Idol Guy Sebastian's Wiki page was funny. How crass. See, guys, here in the States we gay-bait the hosts and judges, not the contestants. Oh, alright, we gay-bait everyone.
  • "Ask a Gay Man" ... well, gay man William Sledd is getting a pilot for a Bravo series tentatively titled Hey, Bitches! Let's hope it works out better for him than it did for Perez Hilton with his Bravo pilot. Wait, did I just say that?

Alan Cumming helps re-invent Oz in the Sci-Fi Channel's Tin Man

Just as the broadcast networks are heading into winter reruns, the Sci-Fi Channel usually airs interesting mini-series. This year, the network is re-imagining The Wizard of Oz with Tin Man.

Tin Man sees "DG" (Zooey Deschanel) transported to The Outer Zone (O.Z.), a former land of wonder turned into a land of repression of fear by a sorceress, Azkedelia (Kathleen Robertson from IFC's The Business). DG is a modern Dorthy Gale — she's older and more action oriented than the original Dorothy — and DG's companions offer new takes on the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and The Scarecrow.

Alan Cumming will be playing Glitch, a former genius who invented some of the greatest devices of the OZ. His brilliance his gone, however, since Azkedelia had his brain taken away. Getting his brain back will require a trip to the Central City and overthrowing Azkedelia's rule of terror.

Check out Cumming as Glitch. I'm a little creeped out by the zipper on his head, but I guess that's the point:

Here's the extended trailer for Tin Man, this one looks like it could be fun to watch some wild ideas thrown out there:

Beo-woof! Meet the body behind Ray Winstone's CGI makeover

Last month, we told you about Ray Winstone's computer-generated makeover in the upcoming CGI film Beowulf. The film uses the motion-capture technology previously seen in The Polar Express and gives the 50 year-old Winstone the body of a much younger man.

That physique, it turns out, is credited to actor Aaron Stephens. (It makes sense that he'd be credited, too, considering how much can be communicated in body language.) The idea of combining the head of one actor with the body of another has an odd Frankenstein-ish feel to it, but the combined performance is also intriguing. If Beowulf succeeds, imagine what one might do with the technology.

Here are a couple pictures of Stephens in his buff magnificence.

If you'd like to see Stephens perform with a little less CGI assistance, he also appears in Tin Man, The Sci-Fi Channel's upcoming re-interpretation of The Wizard of Oz, which stars Zooey Deschanel and Alan Cumming.
