News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Dave Kopay

To Make a Long Story Short ... Genre makes a faux-mo faux pas, Dirty Laundry gets hung out to dry, and more!

  • Former Washington Redskins football player Dave Kopay came out as a gay man on this day in 1975 (he later published an autobiography that addressed being a closeted athlete). Recently Kopay donated a million smackers to build an LGBT student center at the University of Washington.
  • Gay mag Genre admitted to faking a "reality couple" (with a Playgirl Man of the Year, no less) on the cover of a recent issue focusing on long-term relationships. (Queerty broke and Towleroad then added to the story.) Well, I've had a longer-term relationship with Playgirl than with pretty much anything else, so it kind of works for me.
  • Keith Boykin penned an impassioned piece on his blog today about the recent decision of the Clearview Chelsea theater to pull gay African-American comedy Dirty Laundry from its screen after its first week amidst allegations of box-office box-stuffing. (We reviewed the film last week.)
  • DirecTV has pulled the plug on the absolutely crazy soap Passions (which has had its share of gay goings-on), after picking it up at a yard sale from NBC earlier this year. Could possibly regift to Oxygen.

NYC gay football forum attracts prominent gay athletes

Next Thursday GLAAD, the New York Gay Football League, Gay Superbowl 7 and Chelsea's own Gym Sportsbar are hosting a forum titled "The Closet Doors of the NFL," which (as you might guess) aims to discuss the challenges faces by gay athletes in pro football.

Out football vets Dave Kopay and Esera Tuaolo will be on the panel, along with out lesbian Jackie Lepow, who works with the New York Giants, and CBS sports columnist Mike Freeman.

The event grew out of continued interest on the part of gay athletes and fans in the sport and the success of the Gay Games and Gay Football League, and marks the first venture in GLAAD's Sports Media campaign.

GLAAD President Neil Giuliano says:

"'The Closet Doors of the NFL' will shed light on the grim realities gay athletes face when trying to play professional sports ... By giving voice to the struggle against anti-gay prejudice, we bring visibility to an important cultural change happening in the world of American sports."

Needless to say, we find all this talk of gay football players highly exciting. Purely in the academic sense, of course.

For more info on the event, check out Gay Superbowl 7's website.

To Make a Long Story Short ... Barrowmania! continues, Kopay gives big, and more!

  • Barrowmania! continues, with these naughty outtakes from his Out Magazine interview. Yeah, like the interview itself wasn't naughty enough!
  • In discussing his upcoming book, Stephen Colbert lays down his thoughts on gayness: "I'm 100% heterosexual because I'm only attracted to women, and when I am attracted to gay men, I get very angry. That's how I know I'm not gay."
  • Out Broadway star Cheyenne Jackson (remember how we fawned over him before Barrowmania! took hold? How fickle we are!) is among the fabulous talent who will be participating in the Celeb Autobiography: In Their Own Words comedy benefit (for The Actor's Fund) in NYC. Fellow gay actor Jack Plotnick, Kristen Johnston, Jackie Hoffman, Mary Testa and more join him.
  • Gay former footballer Dave Kopay (who came out after he retired) just gifted a million smackers to the University of Washington's LGBT center.
  • Remember club kids? Remember BEFORE club kids? I know, it's like "pre-Velcro" or something. But here's an awesome clip of a 1988 NYC downtown scene recording session of an AIDS benefit track spearheaded by a baby-faced Michael Musto and featuring some of the greats of the scene, including my own personal hero James St. James. I'm getting nostalgic for a time I was never around for in the first place ... ain't the Internet grand?
  • For you Greek fans: Michael Ausiello has some spoilers for next week's finale, including a little on what happens with Calvin, the show's gay character.
