FOX orders a new gender-bending comedy pilot called "Lalola"

Can FOX do what ABC and NBC pulled off with Ugly Betty and The Office, respectively? It's time we find out, because the network is taking a risk in adapting the Argentinian telenovela Lalola into a new series.

According to Variety, Fox has picked up the gender-bending pilot about a womanizer who gets a taste of his own medicine when with two shakes of a stick he's turned from a rooster into a hen by a scorned ex. That's right, it's a new body swapping "comedy" from the network that brought us such high class shows Cops and World's Worst Car Crashes.

Created by Journeyman's Kevin Falls, the show will be set in the world of sports, entertainment and fashion. Think Just One of the Guys meets All of Me and Arli$$ by way of Sex and the City.

To get an idea of what the fuss is all about, here's the trailer for the original Lalola (with english subtitles)

Lalola was hailed as the next Ugly Betty when it premiered in Argentina so I'm sitting here thinking how fun it would be if we could get Betty's Michael Urie and Becky Newton to play the two leads. Sure they have their own show and a little thing called a contract but how fun would that be?

For those of you keeping track at home, this show is not to be confused with FX's new show from Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy called Pretty/Handsome (original title, 4 oz), which is about a husband that comes to terms with being transgender and undergoes gender reassignment surgery starring Joseph Fiennes, Carrie-Ann Moss and Blythe Danner.

Grant Show to swing both ways on CBS's "Swingtown"?

Grant Show first took our breath away (as he did Kelly Taylor's) on an episode of 90210, which was of course the launching pad for the ultra campy, soon-to-become-legendary Melrose Place. He oozed sex appeal and as Jake Hanson he bedded every woman on the show ... and gave every gay man in America something to think about in bed every night.

Luckily, Show is back on television in CBS's new retro-drama hit Swingtown and while some things seem the same (he's still sexy as hell and shirtless in a pool), some things have clearly changed.

Set outside Chicago at the Bicentennial, Show plays Tom Decker, one half of a suburban swinger couple that seduces anything that moves, including their new neighbors, and apparently a man or two.

According to a recent Associated Press article, Grant will be swinging his bat for both teams:

"When Trina Decker's ex-boyfriend pops up around episode six with aspirations of rekindling their high school romance, he ends up bedding both of the Deckers.

"Trina and I pretty much do everything together," says Show, flashing a grin that exaggerates his 'stache. "That, I think, is the craziest thing I've done on the show. It's probably going to flip America up and down the most. It's sort of left to the audience as to how far that goes, but I think that's going to be controversial."

Raise your hands if Swingtown just went from "must see TV" to "must DVR and rewatch over and over TV". If the creators of the show and CBS are paying attention, please write in some man-on-man action between Show's Decker and the repressed Roger Thompson (played by the ever-so-handsome Josh Hopkins); now that would be dy-no-mite!

Showtime and PBS premiere two docs about the joy and pain of coming out

Two queer documentaries from last year are premiering on tv this week, and provide fascinating glimpses into coming out and being out.

We're All Angels profiles pop music stars Jason and deMarco, who are gay men of faith. From their Wikipedia page:

"In 2004, Jason and deMarco appeared on the cover of The Advocate magazine with their new album Spirit Pop, a 12-track album of original compositions, combining pop and inspirational genres and yielded both critical and popular acclaim. "The Advocate cover introduced us to people outside of the community of faith. It was very exciting and I definitely think it introduced us to many new people" says Jason. "The irony, however, was that we were launching our mainstream pop career while The Advocate focused on the gay Christian aspect of who we are, and so many people assumed that our music was gay and Christian. ... We've had to work at clarifying that although we are both gay and men of faith, our music is not religious, nor is it gay. ... We want it to speak to everyone, not only people of one particular faith."

You can see the trailer from We're All Angels, which premieres this Thursday on Showtime, below.

Also this week is the coming-out documentary Anyone and Everyone. It's been playing on a few select PBS stations since last year, but this weekend can be seen in wider release:

"Anyone and Everyone tells the stories of families from Utah to North Carolina and Wyoming to New York, all connected by a common thread — a gay child. This poignant and often heartbreaking documentary by first-time filmmaker Susan Polis Schutz (also the parent of a gay son) reveals a family's struggle and desire to accept a child's sexual orientation. The film features parents from a wide range of religions, ethnicities, and political leanings, all of whom discuss their initial reactions to their child's coming out. While some showed unconditional support, others struggled with their child's sexual orientation, fearing alienation from their extended family, their church, or their community. Some simply did not understand the universal nature of homosexuality, and that it can affect anyone and everyone.

You can see the trailer for Anyone and Everyone after the break, and for air times, check your local PBS station (I've always wanted to say that.)

Craig returning to "Hollyoaks", earlier than expected

Last week, I blogged about the character of Craig (played by Guy Burnet) returning to Hollyoaks for a limited late night series, and wondering if he would get the chance to interact with John Paul. Well, now comes confirmation that he will actually be returning before then, to stir up trouble for J.P. and Kieron:

"With his heart set on rekindling his romance with John Paul (James Sutton), Craig makes a shocking return just as the dust settles in the wake of John Paul's relationship with Father Kieron Hobbs (Jake Hendriks) being exposed to the village."

When asked why the decision was made to bring Craig back, producer Bryan Kirkwood has this to say:

"The Craig and John Paul story is one of the biggest and most successful that Hollyoaks has told, winning many awards and legions of fans. I'm delighted that Guy has agreed to come back and excited to see how viewers will react to what we have in store."

Actually, Craig might not have had to worry about Kieron, as plans were originally to have the character of Niall kill him off to get back at J.P.'s family. Thanks to a massive fan petition, though, the decision was made to keep him on (Thanks to AE reader bunchoflemons for that info). Although, according to this article, his fate is still up in the air (thanks to AE reader MJ for the link). Guy returns for filming next month, with his first appearance starting in September.

Could we really be about to see a gay triangle? One that actually includes gay men, and not green cards, sham marriages, and celibacy?

"Brothers & Sisters" spoiler alert for next season

The third season of Brothers & Sisters doesn't start until the fall, but Televisionista already has spoilers for the first five episodes.

How is this possible? Usually, shows start filming for the fall season in July, but because the writer's strike played havoc with the schedule, ABC decided to put the show back in production for the new season in April (presumably right after they finished the final few episodes of last season).

After the break, you can see the hot off the press spoilers for the next season, including a SHOCKING offer for Kevin!

"The Dating Game" and "The Newlywed Game" to be resurrected, possibly with gay inclusion

The Game Show Network is resurrecting two iconic game shows of the 70's, The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game, with some modern twists:

"For Dating Game, the network is seeking to partner with an online dating site like eHarmony.com to use a compatibility test that helps find worthwhile dates for the show's bachelors and bachelorettes. GSN also wants to have contestants be able to consult with best friends during the show about which date to select. Having occasional gay or lesbian contestants also has not been ruled out."

Admittedly, it's not exactly a "yes, definitely!", and the mention of eHarmony always makes me shudder, but it got me thinking about celebrity editions of the shows. For instance, having Luke McFarlane on The Dating Game, or George Takei and Brad Altman on The Newlywed Game.

We've seen another GSN reimagining of a game show staple do swimmingly with a gay twist (I've Got a Secret, which had an all-gay panel), and other "relationship" game shows like MTV's Next and Parental Control regularly feature gay couples with no fanfare. If these remakes are gay-inclusive and they take off, there are all sorts of ancient game shows that can be brought back and gayed up...

Cyndi Lauper helps Luke and Noah celebrate Gay Pride with a special visit to "As the World Turns"

Yesterday I was dispatched on a top-secret mission in New York City ... to find Luke and Noah! Actually, given what's currently going on in the boys' storyline on As the World Turns, it was rather timely to be invited to the NYC studios yesterday to meet actors Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann and watch the taping of an appearance of a very special guest to Oakdale ...

Cyndi Lauper!

Yes, we're thrilled to be delivering the scoop that the pop legend will be making an appearance on the soap in connection with Luke and Noah. While I'm sworn to secrecy on the details, I can say that Lauper will be performing a few songs at Yo's, the Oakdale dive bar that for this particular occasion has been gussied up for a little celebration known as "Gay Pride".

Go ahead and re-read that if you like. Gay Pride. In Oakdale. Heck, on any soap! It was a complete trip to see the set festooned with rainbow flags and True Colors Tour posters and to watch Oakdale's Gay Finest (yes, there are more gays in the village!) whoop it up with Cyndi and the fellas. Luke interviews Cyndi for Oakdale U's paper and the boys enjoy a few performances.

I also got the chance to chat with Cyndi, Van, and Jake about the show and what's up with our beloved Alpha Gay Couple, but that will have to wait until closer to airdate (I also got to sit at Emma's kitchen table and pretend I was a houseguest at the Snyder Home for Wayward Gay Teens!). But I can say that it was amazing to see Cyndi play a part in this groundbreaking storyline, especially given how dedicated she has been to gay causes in recent years. Just last week I watched her perform at the NewNowNext Awards, and her second annual True Colors Tour starts this week in Boston, and there's no sign that she's slowing down anytime soon.

For now, be sure to check out Cyndi's new dance album Bring Ya to the Brink (it hit stores yesterday and is streaming on AOL as we speak), and be sure your rainbow flags are dusted off for the July 3rd episode of ATWT.

"Design Star" Season 3: HGTV gets even gayer with two new out contestants

My favorite television commercial these days is the one on HGTV featuring a series of vignettes of people watching a real estate show, probably House Hunters.

One viewer wonders which house a couple will choose. Another comments on a kitchen, or the landscaping.

And in the last, a guy looks at the woman he's watching with and plaintively says, "I thought he was his brother."

The woman looks at him pityingly. "They're not brothers."

And that is why I love my big gay home decorating network.

Three years ago, HGTV introduced America to Design Star, a reality competition show for interior designers that went on to become its highest-rated show ever. The out gay winner and breakout star of that first season was David Bromstad, who has gone on to host HGTV's successful Color Splash and inspire legions of fans to fix up the family room and hit the gym and/or tattoo parlor because hello: David Bromstad has some nice arms, yo.

The second season of Design Star featured two out gay men as contestants, Josh Johnson and Scott Corridan, although they both were eliminated fairly early in the competition.

AfterElton.com just got word that Season Three will also feature two out gay male contestants, marking yet again a bold new incursion of gay men into the previously straight-dominated world of interior design.

First is 23-year-old Michael Stribling of College Station, Texas. He's the competition's youngest finalist, and HGTV tells us that he "attributes his success as a designer to his fresh and youthful approach to style."

Michael's audition video is on the Design Star website. He is both fabulous and awesome, and we know it because he says so.

The second out gay contestant is Matt Locke, 38, from Los Angeles. He's the son of an architect dad and artist mom who "provided him with a wildly creative home where he was allowed a great deal of artistic freedom. By age 6, Matt had planned his first bedroom and by age 27, he had built his first house. This Princeton grad also studied fine art and industrial design at the university level and for the past five years has operated his own custom furniture, lighting and interiors company. Matt describes his design style as warm and modern and looks to the great architecture of the world for inspiration."

You can check out Matt's audition video over here. He clearly knows his way around power tools, and don't tell anyone, but Brian has a little crush on him already. (Ed.: I'm quite sure I have no idea what she's talking about, and my testimony will reflect this.) And given that his favorite HGTV show is Divine Design and his favorite film is 9 to 5, I might have a little lesbian version of a crush on him myself.

Exclusive: "Greek" to feature its first gay kiss on May 26

Calvin (Paul James) and Michael (Max Greenfield) are set to lock lips

We've been championing ABC Family's groundbreaking college dramedy Greek since it premiered last summer with an unconventional and unapologetically gay man, Calvin (played by Paul James), in its central cast. We loved the inclusive message, the complicated characters, and the show's refusal to judge its characters for their differences.

Now we're thrilled to share (in exclusive news just given to us moments ago) that Calvin and his new love interest, Michael (who is introduced this coming Monday), will share a kiss on-screen in the May 26th episode, "A Tale of Two Parties". Here's the episode description:

With all of the party restrictions lifted, Kappa Tau and Omega Chi throw competing parties to celebrate. Calvin (Paul James) is nervous about inviting Michael (Max Greenfield) to the party with all of his fraternity brothers around, while Michael feels uncomfortable partying with the students he is the TA at school for. Both are feeling a bit uneasy and a conversation between the two leads to a first kiss.

Max Greenfield, Paul James

We're working on getting more details, but here is one pic from the episode. Looked to me like this might be just before the kiss. We'll update you when we can. For now, this is good news to fans who have been disappointed with Calvin's low profile so far this season, and good reason for those who have been missing out to tune in. (Am I right in thinking that this might be ABC Family's first gay smooch?) If you haven't yet hopped aboard the Greek bandwagon, check out our past coverage.
