AfterElton Briefs: Elton raises millions for Hillary, soccer fans take homophobia by storm, and more!

Elton, Hillary, and that other guy

In a continued effort to bring you all that is important in the world of gay entertainment and ensure that you are being spoon-fed images of gorgeous, commoditized manflesh, we present the newly-minted AfterElton Briefs. Following the usual assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

  • I'm with Simon Doonan - those NYC street fairs really need to dial down the aromas a titch or three. There's nothing like going out to Blood Bath & Beyond for vacuum filters and coming home smelling like you just spent the night in a smokehouse.
  • Last night our reluctant namesake, Sir Elton John, did what he does best: play music. Meanwhile, the subject of his tribute concert, Hillary Clinton, did what she does best: made bad puns with song titles. (Oh, I keed, I keed ... she's alright.)
  • Soccer fans listen up: the folks behind the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) have announced that on May 17th anti-hate events will take place in over 50 countries.
  • I came across this op-ed by a gay writer for the otherwise straight Falls Church News that did a great job of summing up just why it is the Jay Leno "gayest look" gag rubbed a lot of us the wrong way: On its own, "Gay" just isn't funny anymore.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

Simon Doonan: From Barneys to the BBC

Simon Doonan, the creative director of Barneys (not to mention longtime boyfriend of American designer Jonathan Adler and talking head from countless VH-1 shows), is about to get a sitcom based on his early life, to debut this fall on the BBC.

Beautiful People is based on Nasty: My Family and Other Glamorous Varmints, his memoir of growing up in working class England. The producer is Jon Plowman, the man who helped bring Little Britain and Absolutely Fabulous to tv, so grab your "Tickets, Money, Passport!" as it's sure to be wonderfully over-the-top. Sparkle!

As to who should play the young Simon, the man himself has a creative pick:

"I keep thinking Linda Hunt - or somebody fabulous like that. Linda would be great - and she's about my size. I'm just 5-foot-41/2 on my passport, and, believe me, that half inch is very important.

I've seen Simon on all those I Love The --- shows on VH-1, and appreciated his insight and humour, and a young version of Simon should be fascinating television. To see him in his natural habitat, here's the trailer for Five Windows, the documentary about Simon and the window displays of Barneys in New York City.

  • To Make a Long Story Short ... Doonan vamps, Kressley judges, and more!

    • Lance Bass apparently noted recently that he had once thought fellow Syncer Justin Timberlake might have been gay because of his career ambitions: "We thought Justin was gay, because he told us he wanted to do a gay part in a movie." Then again, the same source refers to his bandmate as "Chris Fitzpatrick" (it's Kirkpatrick), so you never know...
    • You've seen fashion expert and Jonathan Adler hubby Simon Doonan pop up on Best Week Ever, Top Model, and more, but chances are you haven't seen him like this ... (warning: NSFW if you work in a place where hilariously bad drag is against company policy)
    • Queer Eye's Carson Kressley will be one of the judges on a new mother-daughter pageant reality show called Crowned. Other titles considered include Not Without My Second Chance at Happiness, Stop Or My Mom Will Wave, and Gastineau Girls.
    • Finally! At noon today the official Daily Show website will launch, featuring nearly the entire video archive of the past nine years. Sorry, Craig Kilborn fans ... maybe next year.

    • Whether you know her as Grizabella or the missing Walker matriarch or "that kind of lesbian-ish gym teacher who gets cut in half in Carrie," Betty Buckley will be performing this Saturday at Town Hall in NYC.
