Beauty and the Geek"Beauty and the Geek" (5.6) recaplet: Gay Greg goes from hot to not
Alas, despite putting up a good fight and providing some of the season's best moments, self-described "Gaysian" Greg was eliminated from Beauty and the Geek this past Tuesday, bringing an end to the reign of the first ever gay contestant on the show. Before we get all misty-eyed with our favorite Greggie moments, let's get this out of the way: his partner brought him down. Had he not been paired with tantrum-prone Randi, he never would have been sent to the Quiz Show of Doom in the first place. Granted, once he got there, his inability to name three James Bond movies was his own damn fault, but he was put squarely in harm's way by no fault of his own, and that really sucks. Even the other players all admitted that Greg got a raw deal because his partner (whom he didn't pick, remember) couldn't keep her yap shut. Moving on... From day one, Greg was an out and proud contestant, who had signed up for the show because his gay geekiness kept him from feeling that he really belonged in the gay community or geekdom. Obviously quite sweet and ridiculously huggable, Greg made fast friends with the girls, and later with the fellas as well. Though shy, he proved his skills as a dancer in the talent show (his out-of-left-field moves were probably the highlight of the season thus far) and did better than most of the other teams in this week's firemen challenge, despite being one of the smallest guys in the competition. If you've been waiting for gay geek Greg to get as much screen time on Beauty and the Geek as he did in the season premiere, this week's episode was certainly satisfying and could have been the campiest the show has gotten. Not only did we get geek makeovers, but the episode had soap opera parodies galore and even a drag show (when the gay castmember wasn't even around!).
Disappointingly, this time we don't get to see the Beauties in full control of their Geek's makeover. Instead, they have to give their geek as much style advice as possible before sending them to pick out their new wardrobe solo. Greg is told by his partner, "Navy Diva" Randi, that he has to get used to wearing a bigger pant size, calling the corduroys he's wearing "nuthuggers" as Greg laughs nervously. Greg and Randi have an adorable "odd couple" vibe, with Randi repeatedly pushing Greg into a case of the giggles with her blunt way of speaking. It's pretty cute when she tries to teach him to have some attitude, trying to get him to snap and say something arrogant, only to have him shake his head and laugh. Later, we see Greg get some additional attitude training at the hair salon as one of the stylists try to give him some practice at snapping his fingers. It's so good to see I'm not the only gay who can't snap. While none of the geek makeovers are as dramatic as in past seasons, Greg now has the confidence to toss out the "Shut up, bitch!" line that Randi tried to teach him earlier. Randi declares that he looks like a boy version of herself while Greg interviews that he feels "Hot with a w... H-A-W-T." Gay TV Recap: "Beauty and the Geek" gets their Gaysian on, wet
Last night the CW premiered the new season of reality "social experiment" Beauty and the Geek, which takes some socially inept but intelligent men and gorgeous but mentally vacuous women and puts them in a mansion together in the name of the greater good. (The greater good being, of course, ratings.) But this season is different for two reasons. First, this is the first year where the geeks will be competing AGAINST the beauties, as opposed to WITH them, in pairs. And second, the show has cast its first gay man, self-professed "Gaysian" Greg (or "Greggie", as the girls will soon take to calling him). In last night's premiere we learned that Greg is gay right off the bat and saw him side instantly with the girls, even though they are technically his enemies in the competition. The girls take to him like a duck to water, and Greg even decides to room with the women rather than deal with his context-challenged (and possibly homophobic) fellow males. Indeed, when we see two of the geeks arguing over top bunk/bottom bunk, one goes out of his way to point out that it's good that the beds aren't on the same level, lest someone accidentally roll into someone else's bed and penetrate him in his sleep, or something. Good lord... Meanwhile, Greggie goes to sit with the gals on the rim of the hottub, we get our first laugh-out-loud moment of the night: He falls in. Submitted by on Wed, 2008-03-12 14:23. Gay Reality TV Alert: Beauty and the Geek cast includes a "Self Proclaimed 'Gaysian'"
After Big Brother and American Idol raised our hopes (and then quickly disappointed us), another reality show looks ready to make new strides in gay inclusiveness. The CW guilty pleasure Beauty and the Geek has announced its new cast and one of the geeks, Greg, is listed as a "Self Proclaimed 'Gaysian'".
Greg also stands out among the list of Geeks for his occupation: unlike the other geek's who have jobs that put them behind a desk, Greg is listed as a "clothing designer/pastry chef". That certainly raises my stereotype alarms ... were all the gay computer programmers too busy to send in a tape? However, if you were hoping the inclusion of a gay geek would also bring gay guy to the Beauties, keep hoping. All of these Beauties have female names. Greg isn't the only Geek who sounds like a step away from a typical, Beauty and the Geek cast, as castmate Jason is described as "One Buff Geek". Greg
The show is promising additional twists this season. Zap2It is reporting that Beauties and Geeks won't be paired up as in past seasons. This time, there will be a team of Geeks and a team of Beauties who will compete against each other, changing the social dynamics of the show. We'll be keeping an eye on this one. At the least it'll be good to see a gay guy on a show that uses a Pet Shop Boys song for its opening theme. I'll keep my fingers crossed that BatG doesn't drop the ball the way Idol and Big Brother have. Submitted by on Wed, 2008-02-20 16:08. |

Beauty and the Geek varied its formula a bit last season when they introduced a team with a female geek and a male beauty (Sam, pictured here). This season it looks like they're continuing to add twists to their cast by giving us the show's first openly gay geek. (Though, really, "Self Proclaimed"? Do CW execs think it's that unusual a term?)
