We look at the sparse history of same-sex weddings on TV and in the movies.

In Memoriam: Suzanne Pleshette, 1937-2008
In a continued effort to bring you all that is important in the world of gay entertainment and ensure that you are being spoon-fed images of gorgeous, commoditized manflesh, we present the newly-minted AfterElton Briefs. Following the usual assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.
- Cheyenne Jackson, Raul Esparza, Dennis O'Hare, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Mo Rocca and more will be among the sleep-deprived stars performing the 24-Hour Musicals tonight at Joe's Pub. For charity!
- You have to get up pretty early in the morning to beat the Maxim guys at recycling gay jokes from 2004 regarding the sexuality of celebs like Matthew Broderick, Oscar de la Hoya and Hugh Jackman. Damn they're good!
Chuck & Larry: Howzabout Best Costume?
- I Now Pronounce You Razzie-Worthy: Chuck, Larry and company earn Golden Raspberry noms (the low watermark of Hollywood badness) in all major categories except for Worst Actress ... because Kevin James doesn't count.
- Terrence McNally's Corpus Christi, which depicts Jesus as a gay man who gets "Biblical" with Judas and performs a gay marriage, is still causing controversy after nearly a decade (this time in Australia).

Two news bits about Rob Schneider and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry hit my newsfeeds this week.
First, Asian Week magazine named Schneider's prosthetic-wearing performance as a Japanese rabbi at number five in its list of the 25 Most Infamous Yellow Face Film Performances. The short write-up on Chuck and Larry concludes, "For a film that argues for the rights of gays, it’s even more disappointing that the message of acceptance does not extend to Asians." Considering how controversial the film was with gay filmgoers (a debate our own Brian Juergens covered in his recap of the Year in Queer Film), I found that comment rather interesting. While Chuck and Larry tried to make amends for making its gays the butt of most of their jokes by having Sandler's character denounce anti-gay teasing, there's no counterpart offered to Schneider's offensive performance.
The bigger story, however, is that a lawsuit claiming that I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry stole from the 2004 film Strange Bedfellows where Australian actors Paul Hogan and Michael Caton play straight firemen who pretend to be a gay couple in order to get government benefits.
The lawsuit points an accusatory finger at Rob Schneider, who received a copy of Bedfellows from Caton while the two actors worked together on The Animal. According to the complaint, Schneider gave that copy to Adam Sandler. The lawsuit doesn't address claims that Chuck and Larry was in development before Bedfellows' release, so it'll be interesting to see how that one progresses.
I wonder if Schneider's PR rep is debating which is the worse accusation -- to have helped keep a racist relic from the past alive or stealing a script? I guess they're both easier to handle than the usual accusations of not being funny.

Brent and Michael are back with a new feature: the Passing Judgment video blog. In this variation on their usual vlog, the fellas get all Olympic (in the mythological sense) on I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Ugly Betty, and new gay young adult novel The God Box. Will they crown these gay entertainments with laurels, or zap them with Thor's thunderclap?

It opened in the US back in July, and now it’s made its way across the pond. Yes, I hate to break the bad news, but I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry has finally been released in the UK.
Rated certificate 12a, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry opened nationwide on September 21st. While it features a great cast, including Dan Aykroyd, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi and Jessica Biel, on reflection, the cast is about the only decent thing it has going for it. So it’s no surprise that reaction to this stale movie has been as unflattering in the UK as it was in the US. (Be sure to read our review for more.)
The Times Online said: “The film-makers behind I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry would probably claim a message of tolerance and personal growth, but this woeful Adam Sandler vehicle is as nasty a piece of sniggering homophobia as (we) have seen in a long time.”
Film bible Empire magazine was equally unimpressed: “With ribald and stale jokes at odds with the slender social message, this wedding piece crashes and burns amid its own hypocrisy.” Whilst Total Film said “Veering between knee-jerk homophobia and PC proselytising for gay rights – often in the same scene – Dennis Dugan’s comedy is an unhappy union.”
The Manchester Evening News thought it was "staggering that I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry should ever see the light of day" and that it was "hard to see the good in a film which revels in the prejudice and ignorance of its small-minded characters."
Here's a synopsis - just in case you're still undecided as to whether this film is worth the price of admission...

 - Out designer (and former Top Design judge) Jonathan Adler will appear on tonight's episode of Welcome to the Parker. Here's to hoping he refers to someone on the staff as "the concierge of the Excuses Hotel."
- Transgender filmmakers and artists are being excluded from LGBT events like Frameline for not being "queer enough" in their work. In related news, some porridge "too hot," other porridge "too cold."
- On the other end of the spectrum, there's a debate going on at Queersighted over the gay short film Two Big Fags. Thoughts?
- NewNowNext has former pornstar (and current castmember of The Lair) Colton Ford's video for his first single, "The Way You Love Me".
- If, like me, you thought that the funniest thing about Chuck & Larry was the idea that Adam Sandler was the hottest guy in the firehouse, this Today Show clip of the pinups from the 2008 FDNY Heroes Calendar is a nice reminder that it was all just Hollywood magic.

 - Anderson Cooper and a colleague have an awkward but cute moment while discussing baby clothes.
- Our pal Greg Hernandez at Out in Hollywood has a great report from the Brothers & Sisters panel at Outfest.
- Phil Collins' son Simon Collins comes out as bisexual with his new CD, Time for Truth. Says dad: "I've been waiting for this moment all my life, oh lord."
- Pro rugby's only out gay referee to preside over largest trophy match in the Rugby Union.
- Despite awful reviews and outcry from both gays and Christians, Chuck & Larry takes top spot at box office, beating Harry Potter's second weekend and Hairspray (which had the biggest opening in musical history -- and no, I'm not referring in any way to John Travolta).
- In keeping with a tradition of fabulous and gay-friendly guests, The Simpsons will feature the voice talents of David Hyde Pierce, John Mahoney, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and more for season 19.
- Kiss the Bride debuts at Outfest and The Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian Festival. Check out this interview with director C. Jay Cox and maybe there is one NSFW picture too!

- One of my favorite people in the universe, Scott Thompson from Kids in the Hall, to co-star with Trick himbo J.P. Pitoc in Shifting the Canvas, which looks to be about the gay bohemian gentrification of Brooklyn. Well, I live in Brooklyn and I'm quite sure I have no idea what they're talking about.
- Chuck & Larry, meet ten gay couples who have had an incredibly hard time getting benefits or rights for their partners. I would crack wise about the ACLU's ruining everyone's fun with this dose of reality, but the movie wasn't much fun to begin with.
- Speaking of Chuck & Larry, WorldNutDaily's wingnut movie reviewer Ted Baehr hates --gasp! -- the gay firemen movie which he says is one of most anti-Christian of the year. In completely unrelated news, The Guiness Book of World Records gives Baehr title of having the biggest stick up his bum.
- Not gay, but very funny: 15 Unfortunately Placed Ads (t/y WoWReport)
- How well do you know your actors who have donned ladies apparel in the movies?
- Our buddy John Polly at NewNowNext posted a great piece on the 21 Queerest Rock Movies. I did the blurbs for The Apple and The Phantom of the Paradise, so totally read those first.
- It's the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER with everything gay from the TCA, news about this week's Entourage and much more!
- And after the jump you'll find the very courageous Tammy Faye Messner's thoughts on being a pro-gay Christian.

 - GLAAD busts actress Niurka Marcos homophobic comments about her ex-husband Bobby Larios who is playing gay. That's the couple in happier days.
- Gay firemen of New York say I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry mirrors their lives. I guess that's a whole lot better than Rescue Me mirroring their lives!
- We mentioned Tammy Faye Messner's guaranteed-to-be-devastating appearance on Larry King on the Queerview today, and this video excerpt confirms that watching this exceptional woman's pain is virtually unbearable. This woman has been through so effing much and has been such a friend to gay visibility in recent years, and our hearts and wishes go out to her.
- We never thought we'd say this, but we kind of agree with James Woods.
- Remember that ban on gay sex at the South Pacific Games? Well, it's been banned. Next: a ban on banning!
- AOL Movies has a quiz testing your "Men in Drag" knowledge. Warning: Big Momma's House references therein.
