Gale Harold

Gale Harold moves to Wisteria Lane

Gale Harold fans rejoice. The sexy and very popular star of Queer as Folk will be turning up on the small screen again on the May 18th finale of Desperate Housewives. According to TV Guide's Michael Ausiello he'll be playing "a quick-witted, charming and buttoned-down suburbanite. Picture a young Jack Lemmon, only without a cross-dressing Tony Curtis dragging him down."

Hmm. Nothing about Gale Harold reminds me in the least of Jack Lemmon. I guess we'll have to wait and see how this pans out.

While Harold's May 18th turn on Desperate Housewives' is billed as a guest appearance, there are rumors that his character will have a central role in next season's big mystery.

Out on DVD: For the Bible Tells Me So, Rhinoceros Eyes

Gale Harold in Rhinoceros EyesGale Harold in Rhinoceros Eyes

It's been a while since we've done an Out on DVD post on Tuesday, but the sad fact is that there really hasn't been all that much coming down the gay pike lately. But today there are a few releases of interest...

For the Bible Tells Me So
Whether you're a lapsed Catholic, an avowed atheist, a devotee of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or anything in between, you should watch this movie. Seeing how these very different Christian families deal with having a gay child is illuminating, frustrating, and ultimately incredibly moving and inspiring. We don't see enough dialog about gays and faith on a human level, and this film opens up the discussion for anyone who has friends or family who are at odds with what they understand their faith to say about homosexuality. We reviewed the film when it had its limited theatrical release and interviewed director Daniel Karslake, if you'd like to know more.

Rhinoceros Eyes
I actually saw this movie about 5 years ago and while I can't say I loved it, the story of a young prop warehouse employee (Michael Pitt) who will go to any lengths to secure rare objects for a woman he falls for has something about it that sticks in the memory. While there isn't anything gay about the film, I'm mentioning it here because it features an all-too-rare appearance by Queer As Folk's Gale Harold as a dancing gumshoe. Yes, I just said "dancing gumshoe". And he's light on his feet!

Falling for Grace: B. D. Wong, Gale Harold, and Margaret Cho star

For a totally conventional hetero Cinderella romantic comedy without even an Obligatory Gay Best Friend, Falling for Grace, which opens this weekend in San Francisco and next weekend in Washington, DC, is kind of a who's who of the queer and near-queer.

It stars Queer as Folk's Gale Harold as the JFK Jr-esque Andrew Barrington, Jr. He's vying for the affections of Grace Tang (Faye Ann Lee) with Steven, played by gay actor B.D. Wong (M. Butterfly, Law & Order: SVU). When Grace, who has been mistaken for a Hong Kong heiress by a group of upper-crust New Yorkers, falls for Andrew, Steven turns his sights on her best friend, Janie, brought outrageously to life by every gay boy's best friend, Margaret Cho.

And there's more: Andrew's brittle socialite mother is played by the brilliantly funny and gay-friendly Christine Baranski (Birdcage, Jeffery). Baranski is currently on Broadway, starring in Paul Rudnick's Regrets Only, where she plays a different kind of socialite mother, one who's torn between her husband, a conservative lawyer helping the president write an anti-gay marriage amendment, and her gay best friend, Hank.

It's also something of a Law and Order who's who, because in addition to Wong and Baranski, both L&O franchise alums, Andrew is about to become engaged to Kay, played by Stephanie March (SVU's ADA Alexandra Cabot). She's kind of WASP-y and uptight but her hair looks really fabulous in this movie, and there just has to be something gay about that.

Gale Harold tells us why we should know about Scott Walker.
